Crowd Control and a New Level of OCD

Yesterday morning during our breakfast, there were a lot of school groups out on the streets. I don't know where they were going, but clearly some place historic had an open house. Keeping the kids under control is I'm sure no easy task. The solution with the small fry (since leashes aren't permitted) is to have them create their own version of a chain gang. The kids all wear matching smocks and they were instructed to grab the tail of the smock in front of them. Group after group crossed the plaza. It was adorable. (And, as some people say, "They're all really smart. They're so young and they already speak Spanish." Yes, really, some people do say.)

FIELD TRIP. GRAB THE SMOCK IN FRONT OF YOU AND KEEP MOVING.

Sevilla has another version of crowd control. Around 1:30 or 2:00, everyone converges on their favorite plaza bar for their siesta drink before heading off for lunch and then back to work around 5. No smocks, which would be a really nice touch. But most people grab a small beer (known as a "caña" or "cervezita") and stay put for a half hour, an hour, sometimes more. I met Albert for a quick drink. Lola had been in Córdoba overnight and joined us on her way home. She and Albert (a walking and talking guide book) shared so much about the beauty, charm, and history of the city (which is only 20 minutes away on the high-speed AVE train), that I told San Geraldo we really have to get up one morning and go (we've been talking about doing so for weeks).

SIESTA AT PLAZA DEL SALVADOR. GRAB THE BEER IN FRONT OF YOU AND STAY A WHILE.

Many bars close at the end of siesta (and re-open at night) and most people are long gone before then. A few die-hards stick around until closing. I haven't closed a bar in a long time. Lola, Albert, and I did so yesterday. It's so much easier when closing time is 5 p.m. Some people move on to cocktail bars to continue their own personal parties with more grown-up drinks, like "gin tonic." I went home. Three and a half hours and two cañas were more than I could handle.

THE PLAZA AND BAR AFTER SIESTA. STORES RE-OPENED, BARS CLOSED.
ALBERT DIDN'T WANT TO LEAVE. (HE'S AVAILABLE FOR PARTIES... ALWAYS.)

IS THAT THE MOON?!?  TIME FOR ME TO GO HOME.
I'M JUST NOT AS MUCH FUN AS ALBERT AND LOLA.

Happily Obsessive-Compulsive
I can't believe I'm sharing the following. I especially can't believe I'm including a photo. Or that I even took the photo in the first place. Well, for that matter, I can't believe I noticed there might even be something to take a photo of. But, when I went inside the bar to use the men's room, I was pleased (OK, oddly pleased) to notice that my clothing colors perfectly coordinated with the bathroom's decor. Now I'm going to want to check in advance so I can always plan the outfit accordingly.

GLEEFUL TO COLOR-COORDINATE... WITH A BATHROOM.

  1. I thought siesta was about sleeping? Also, it is always a joy when you find that you're color coordinated with the world. :)

Why can't we all just color-coordinate?

I forgot to mention the sleeping part. A drink and/or lunch; then the nap; then back to work... or whatever.

    3. ... And not everyone takes a nap!

  2. I love your picture in the bathroom. Coordinated or not, you look like a really nice guy--which of course you are. I think I'd have a big problem getting used to the hours they keep in Spain. I'm an early riser (thanks to three hungry kitties) so my internal clock would be way out of whack! I got a bang at the remark about the kids in Sevilla being so smart because they speak Spanish.

Thanks so much for the generous assessment!

That language response is sadly not uncommon. I heard someone say it about kids in London, too ("They start speaking with English accents!"). And someone here told me when he and his wife brought home their adopted daughter from North Africa, a neighbor asked how they were going to communicate with her since they couldn't possibly speak her language. (She was one week old!)

Anyway, you get up, feed the cats, and go back to bed.

  3. Those children are adorable!

I would take a photo in the bathroom, too--that is just a striking coincidence! The designer Nate Berkus will sometimes show his living space, and it almost always matches what he's wearing. It's as if he's the personification of the space he occupies...

...that's not to say that you're the personification of a public restroom...

    :)

  4. Oh the photo of you in the bathroom made me laugh out loud over my morning cuppa. You look so pleased with yourself! I'm impressed that you even noticed. (I've just scrolled up to look at the pic again and have another chuckle.) What a great way to start my morning.

      The kids were definitely adorable.

I couldn't help myself. I walked into the bathroom, turned on the light, and my first thought was, "We match!" I cracked myself up, I have to say, and tried not to laugh while I took the picture. Sometimes I find myself so entertaining.

  6. LOL! As long as you don't start to hang around there for an inordinate amount of time, Mitch, things should be OK!!

Now, would that be the same moon Ron was taking photos of on our way home from the Valley this afternoon? Great minds think alike!!

I don't wear that color combination often, so I won't be able to spend too much time in that bathroom.

  7. SO Mitch you are the epitome of cool, now, in my books....imagine 3 colours and you have the exact 3 on. Kinda wierd though, really...washroom colour co-ordination....hey maybe it could be a blog title...probably already is! I really like the 5pm curfew you gave yourself...can you just imagine the 'hangover' you would have had....!?

  9. At least you know how to dress when you go to that bar!

And it's rare for me to use bathrooms other than my own at home, so maybe I don't have to worry so much how I dress when I go elsewhere. Just knowing I match the decor at one place is reassuring.

  10. Hey, that's a great picture of you no matter wear it was taken. And your wonderful pictures do make me want to visit Spain again, even though our next destination is India. Take care.

Thanks. I didn't mind that photo too much, which says a lot I suppose.

India would be fascinating. A friend of mine was just saying that was his next destination, too.
