Cats and Dogs

The other day, as I sat at my desk, I heard a thunderous noise followed by a loud pattering on the terrace. I took a quick look. No thunder. No lightning. No rain. But there sat the terra cotta dancing dogs San Geraldo had since before I met him more than 32 years ago. The dogs were still dancing, but one was doing so without his head.

The sculpture is of the famous dogs of Colima, Mexico. The real Colima Dog (Techichi or Esquincla) is believed to be a relative of the Chihuahua (Mexican Hairless). However, having been around for more than 3,000 years, the Colima Dogs are said to be the "first dogs of the Americas."

Unlike Mexico's Colima Dogs, San Geraldo's dogs survived only about 35 years — until our Spanish cats discovered and conquered them. It's amazing how much commotion they made while doing so. When I found the culprits at the other end of the terrace, they denied all responsibility for the damage that was done. This seems quite fitting even if I'm just a little late for Columbus Day.

  2. Oh my. :) Seriously, though-- was the statue sitting on the ground like that? How did the cats manage to decapitate it?
Your patio is so nice. Do you two really spend time sitting out there? Morning coffee? Evening after-dinner beverage?

Yep. That's exactly where the statue had been. I have no idea what they did or how they did it. We don't spend as much time sitting on the terrace as we'd like or should, but we do spend quite a bit of time out there.

  3. It was already cracked. It only took a brush of the tail and it all fell apart. Someone has to speak in defence of the innocent.

  4. The statue is so interesting and I hope it can be repaired. Your poor cats must be traumatized. I would be! The plants on your balcony look so wonderful. What a good place to be when it's not too hot.

I'll just glue it together ... until next time. Even in the heat of summer, the terrace was a wonderful place to be. We just rolled down the awnings and enjoyed the sea breezes.

Unlike our previous cats, these two are into everything.

  7. I guess dogs and cats don't get along even when some of them aren't real.

If you asked Dudo or Moose, they'd tell you the "other" dog did it.
