Tequila!

I did find something to buy yesterday at Fuengirola's Saturday Market. Heading through the main avenue — after first hearing Pseudo-Peruvian Pan Flutes and then "Native American" Pan Flutes (which included two authentic vinyl teepees as part of the second display) — I heard some really good music. On guitar, Pablo Pierángeli. On keyboard, Lucho Serenelli. They call themselves "Mitá i Mitá." (I don't know what that means exactly; perhaps "Measure by Measure." Maybe you know?) They say they play Blues and Surf Rock. [NOTE: I’ve since learned mitá i mitá means “half and half,” which is how the guys agreed to split anything they earned performing. It’s Andalusian dialect for mitad y mitad.]

MITÁ I MITÁ.  SURF ROCK FUENGIROLA.

Lucho and Pablo do eventually sing on my video (below). The intro got dragged out just a bit. It's worth the wait. (Someone wanted to buy their CD but didn't know what "self-service" meant). After enjoying Mitá i Mitá's music for 15 minutes, I ended up of course buying the CD (no assistance required). At €5, a much better investment, I think, than that nutcracker I told you about yesterday (click to see that).

The Virgin of Tequila
My one experience with tequila? I was 19, at university, and sharing a 5-bedroom house with four other guys. One of the guys had an out-of-town girlfriend, Janie, who came up for the weekend. Janie brought a bottle of tequila. No one else was home, so we (both tequila virgins) decided to see what it was like. Salt, limes, tequila, shot glasses. All set.

MY OLD TEQUILA HOME OFF CAMPUS.
BUILT IN THE 1870s  (AND NOT HISTORICALLY MAINTAINED).

First shots. "I don't feel a thing. What about you?" "Nothing."

Third shots. "Still nothing." "I don't know why everyone makes such a big deal about this stuff."

Fourth shots. Together, "Tequila!"

By the time we finished our fifth shots (or seventh or eleventeenth, I'm not quite sure), everyone else had come home. Another roommate had a girlfriend from Colombia. (She told me the next day that we had a great conversation. She also told me she had no idea I spoke such fluent Spanish. Maybe I should drink more tequila. Nope!)

Finally, empty bottle. "I don't feel very well..." "Me neither."

A week later. Living on rice and still recovering from the worst hangover of my life (and there have been many).

All these years later: I can't stand even the smell of tequila.

But I still like the song. Such profound lyrics. Tequila!

  2. Love the story. I had a similar experience with Malibu Rum - can't stand the sight of it

There's also a jug of really cheap red wine in my history. That was easy. I just don't buy jugs of wine that cost less than $1 anymore.

  4. I used to consistently get crazily intoxicated on the weekends. Now, I drink two glasses of wine at dinner and I am sick as a dog the next morning. I bemoan my youth...

I used to get crazily intoxicated every day (but usually no one could tell). I'm glad that now it's a couple of drinks every so often. No hangovers.

  5. Many of us have fought and lost a battle with tequila. But a shot right about now doesn't sound too bad.

Amazingly, after all this time, the idea of a shot of tequila never sounds good to me.

  6. Good investment in Mita I Mita cd! Really like their music!
Now Tequila....oh my. All I know is that we had a GREAT time with a friend of ours one Halloween night roaming around the city! She got very sick but Ron and I 'soldiered on'! We never got a hangover but felt very strange the next day.
I still like the song too Mitchell!

It amazes me how I can still recall how bad I felt that week. I didn't have another drink until a week later. Can you imagine?!? (And it wasn't tequila.)

  7. I've never had Tequila--unless they put it in Strawberry Margueritas. I remember having one of those at a Mexican restaurant back in the 80's. I got a chuckle out of your reference to "authentic vinyl teepees"!

Yep, tequila is the always-included ingredient of a Margarita, unless it's a "virgin." I've tried Margaritas, but the tequila just brings flashbacks.

Sorry I didn't get a photo of those teepees and the Native American pan flute player. I don't like taking photos of performers without a tip, and I didn't have any coins left.

  8. I enjoyed the video, but not as much as the boy in the background. My evil teen drink is bourbon. Can't bear the smell of it now.

The boy in the background had really gotten into the music at first; he got a little more reserved when everyone started taking pictures of him.

I'm very impressed with your teen drink! Bourbon is so adult. That was my father's favorite every night when he got home from the office. Maybe when I grow up.

  9. I went to Mexico last year: this prompted me to study up on tequila so I wouldn't feel stupid when shopping, and I didn't want no rubbish neither. When I go back next year I will have several to find and sample.
But it doesn't replace my beloved whiskey/bourbon/scotch!

Lucho is both hot and versatile. Fingers AND lips - mmmmm! Pity about the done-to-death 'song', though.

Yep, Lucho was definitely pleasant to watch. They perform at clubs around town. I'm going to check them out some night.
