Basic Anatomy, Málaga

Matt and Lindy (nephew and niece-in-law), left Fuengirola Monday to spend some time in Málaga. They've rented an ático (top floor/attic/penthouse) apartment in the old part of town. San Geraldo and I took the train into the center of Málaga to join them for dinner Tuesday night. Matt met us at the station so we wouldn't have to find our way to their apartment through the maze of streets.

MATT BUYING FLOWERS ON THE WAY HOME.
MORE CHOICES ON FLOWER-LINED ALAMEDA PRINCIPAL.
SAN GERALDO AT RIGHT LEADING THE WAY
(ALTHOUGH HE HAD NO IDEA WHERE WE WERE GOING).
LINDY AS RAPUNZEL (SEE BELOW).
SHE DIDN'T LET DOWN HER HAIR...
... SO WE HAD TO CLIMB THE GOLDEN STAIR (NO ELEVATOR).
WELL WORTH THE CLIMB.
ON A CLEAR DAY... JUST IMAGINE.
POTTERY PATCHWORK.
LINDY AND MATT CALL HIM STEVEN... AS IN, STEVEN SEAGULL.
(IF YOU DON'T KNOW HIS NAMESAKE, ACTOR STEVEN SEAGAL, YOU'RE NOT MISSING A THING.)
HEADING DOWN FOR DINNER.

Matt and Lindy took us to a restaurant called Citrón, which was incredible. My food pictures came out awful, so you'll have to trust me. The menu was unusual and everything was perfectly prepared and presented. (Check out their website here.) The service was exceptional and there was a gifted flamenco guitarist. Our server told us that she and her wife were the first same-sex couple to be legally married in Málaga, 10 years ago. So a very special place in many ways.

THE LAST TRAIN LEFT MÁLAGA AT 11:30, SO WE DINED REALLY EARLY (BEFORE 9).
THAT GAVE US WAY TOO MANY SEATING CHOICES.
OUR FIRST TABLE.
(WE CHANGED OUR MINDS.)
SETTLED AND LOOKING BACK FROM WHENCE WE CAME.

Between courses, San Geraldo excused himself to use the "facilities." When he returned, he told us the signs on the restroom doors left him completely befuddled. Based on his interpretation, he chose Door #1. The toilet seat was down. He did his business and then peeked behind Door #2. That seat was up. He explained that the image on Door #1 looked to him like testicles. Lindy said, "Funny, I would have described those as "breasts."

So, of course, I had to see for myself. I then asked one of the staff. Apparently, San Geraldo had chosen incorrectly. As far as I'm concerned, the jury is still out. And maybe that's the way it should be.

DOOR #1:  TESTICLES OR BREASTS?
DOOR #2:  PHALLUS OR FALLOPIAN?

  1. I'm with San Geraldo, testicles, but crikey, I wouldn't want to be trying to figure that out after a glass of wine. What a lovely apartment and sounds like a great restaurant.

After a glass of wine, you might be confused but I don't think you'd really care. The apartment in Malaga is charming inside, too. Wood-beamed ceilings. A surprisingly classy kitchen. Two bedrooms. Lots of light. Great location. I could live there!

  2. What interesting times you both are having! I would have to say that I would be totally confused with that signage too. We have always 'liberated' female washrooms when it was necessary....even when the signage was crystal clear!

What a wonderful view atop that penthouse apt! Well worth the climb of stairs.
Oh Mitchell, your photos are great! Love those 'stairs' ones!

Since both "bathrooms" were one-seaters, I don't know why it would even make a difference anyway. The apartment is charming and very romantic. A great find.

Thanks for the compliment re my photos. I really enjoy it... even with my simple camera.

  3. Steven landed on the edge of the terrace today. I thought he was going to fly into the apartment! Mitchell, if you get a chance, please email these photos to me. I'd love to have them.

I'll definitely send you the photos. (I'm honored!) I miss you both already. You really need to move to Spain!

  4. I WANT to come back! I want to rent that place. I want to have to figure out which restroom to use.... I've had enough of this caballero or damas crap .... give me fig leaves or whatever the heck those testicles/breasts symbols mean... who give a flying you know what.... (Okay we've been in TX two weeks..... does that sound like I've had enough?)

Their apartment is perfect and you'd certainly get a workout with the stairs. (Although, it would be hard to leave that rooftop!) Texas or Málaga? Now if that ain't two different buckets of possums.

  5. Aren't those lemons? But lemons don't tell you if that's the one yu want. I have a badder the size of a peanut and require clarity when I'm dashing to the restroom.

I don't think anyone has a right to complain if you use the "wrong" one-person bathroom.

  6. Hey, I didn't get a chance to comment on the last post, but loved seeing the photo of you and San Geraldo together!
(Those are pretty crazy bathroom door labels, but I really loved the apartment, the street scenes, and the restaurant.)

Thanks so much. I wish I had more candid photos of us. I love that one. Tom did well. I do love Málaga. Being there with Matt and Lindy made me appreciate it. I plan to spend a lot more time there this year.

  7. It is a nice view from on high.

I would not trust myself to be correct with either sign, but the second one looks more phallic, so I will suggest that is the Men's.

Supposedly, the second one is the men's room, but I'm sure people would argue back and forth. "Balls!" said the Queen, "If I had them I'd be King."

  8. Before I scrolled down to the second door sign I thought the first one might be a fig-leaf, albeit mangled - but not only does the second one not work as such, presumably the F would 'require' three while the M just the one? Oh, forget it! (Just being silly!)

After reading your comment, I then thought of letter abbreviations. Men's would normally be H for Hombres or C for Caballeros. No sign of either letter. There went that theory.

Spaniards wouldn't normally bother covering up the "parts" with fig leaves. But I like your thinking.

  9. I would have been stumped by the doors, too, and might have gone outside to find a secluded alley?

I love those buildings, and the rooftop views, but man oh man, the stairs!!! Oy! I guess I could consider it a daily workout?

I love using the stairs. But an elevator is nice to have when you've been shopping or moving furniture!

  10. The balcony looks so welcoming! I would not have known what to make of the signs. Once I was quite baffled in a vocational school at a plant sale where the doors were labelled "stamens" and "pistlils". I just stood there thinking, "Oh, what am I?"

    1. Kristi:
I always got stamens and pistils confused. To help myself remember in high school, I said the male has a pistol (gun), so the pistil is male. But that was wrong -- pistil is female. So, now I tell myself to remember that it's the opposite of what I taught myself. Only now I remember correctly, so have to remind myself that what I taught myself is not what I now remember.

In other words, I probably would have had an accident while I stood in front of the doors (stamens and pistils) and tried to figure it out.
