My Shadow Self[ie]

It's been like summer here in Fuengirola. I've been trying to spend as much time outside as I can. This afternoon, I managed to get in an hour on the beach — walking, lying in the sand, splashing in the water, and discovering more sea glass.

Never big on "selfies," I took one to send to the Dowager Duchess (which I immediately emailed from the beach). But then I spotted my shadow in the surf and I got a better idea. An idea that could easily become an obsession.

There was an American writer named Djuna Barnes, active in the 1920s and 1930s, who said: "A man is whole only when he takes into account his shadow."

I know it's only a shadow.
But it's all mine!

Absolutely. Who cares about best side, open eyes, good lighting?!?

  3. Oh how COOOOOOOL!
(p.s. After the link yesterday that took us to more stories about art glass, I waded through quite a few of your 2011 posts about life PRE España. Fun for me! It was interesting to see you talking about your plans, as if I were observing from the future [which I guess that I sort of was]. I had quite a good time reading:) )

Glad you're getting to read these. I've been going back through them lately. Hard to believe all we've done recently, and the amount of times we changed our minds!

  4. Mitchell, I think you may be on to something here! Imagine the possibilities and how forgiving our shadows are.
Great shots. #'s 5 and 6 are good gestures.....5 looks like J.L. Sullivan pose (the boxer) and 6 looks like, well, you know.
I know, you could have a 'guess who' weekly pose. How nice of me to suggest this!! lol
You will be pleased to hear that the temperature today got up to +16C.....thank you very much.

I'm going to play some more with losing my inhibitions on the beach and really expressing my shadow-self. Temps here have been around 30C, but 16C for you is wonderful!

  5. I learned how to make shadow figures as a kid... never was good at it... but shadows and silhouettes are so interesting... I can look 7' tall if I want to.

  6. Love the shadow shots. I haven't heard of the writer you quoted but I do like that quote.

Djuna Barnes was ahead of he time and, apparently, she's growing in popularity again all these years later.

I actually had that playing in my head when I was taking the pictures. But, I'm not much of a Madonna-the-person fan, so went with Peter Pan instead.

  9. I hate looking at my shadow. I look FAT. Every stinking time. Your shadow is quite lovely, though....

Once, I actually got miffed at Bing because her shadow was so much sveltier than mine.....

I look big-hipped and heavy legged. I'm not. Shadows lie.
