Do You Want Me To Hold Your Head?

As I suspected, I do have a hernia. I'll have surgery probably toward the end of April. (The doctor initially scheduled it for April 9, but that would have impacted my social calendar!)

Today's photos have nothing to do with today's story. Once you've read, you'll understand why and will be grateful. (Still, click any image to enlarge the adorable.)

MOOSE DISCOVERS A CANVAS TOTE BAG.
(NOTE THE FLASH OF WHITE INSIDE THE BAG... DUDO GOT THERE FIRST.)

My stomach was upset Tuesday afternoon and, as I sat at the medical center waiting for my appointment, I proceeded to feel worse. At first I thought it was nerves, but by the time we headed home I felt weak, feverish, and had chills. I got out of the taxi and headed quickly into our building.

In the elevator, San Geraldo asked, "Do you feel like you're going to throw up?"

"No," I responded, "I just feel like I can't stand much longer."

A minute later, as I slipped the key in the lock, I said, "I think maybe I am going to..."

DUDO:  "HE'S SO ANNOYING!"

Fortunately I made it to the bathroom.

And that's as much detail as you'll get about my stomach virus. Except I will tell you that as I knelt and worshipped at the porcelain god, San Geraldo called from the den, "Do you want me to hold your head?"

Some people might find that endearing. (Well, I suppose I do, too.) But if I hadn't been choking at the time, I would have laughed. San Geraldo gets the dry heaves at the mention of the word "vomit." A great help he would have been.

AND MOOSE ENDS UP THE WINNER... FOR ONCE.

Later that night, San Geraldo did get the dry heaves. At first we thought he had also contracted the stomach bug, but as we look back now we're pretty certain his was an empathetic illness — dry heaves carried to an extreme.

Reciprocation
In the middle of the night, San Geraldo called out (as he is wont to do when he's not feeling well), "Miiiii-tchulllllllll."

I staggered to the bathroom to find him, as expected, kneeling on the floor and tipping sideways. I threw a towel under his head and said, "I'll get you a pillow."

I returned and realised I myself was close to passing out.

I thought, 'Maybe I should help him up.'

Then I thought, 'I have a hernia!'

"Here's a pillow. I can't help you," I blurted as I grabbed the doorframe for support before staggering back to bed.

A recent typical evening at Meson Salvador.
(Because I didn't take video Tuesday night ... John Gray of the blog, "Going Gently," probably would have — click here.)

  1. Oh no! Are you and John going *ahem* 'head to head' as it were???

Yes, I had to do it.

Take care of you, hope the surgery is easy and you recuperate quickly. (And San G isn't alone on word-induced nausea. That lovely, descriptive 'puke' does the same thing to me; I can read it, but if I hear it I'm in the bathroom and the loveliest shade of green...)

Oh, I wouldn't even attempt to go head to head with John Gray. His blog is sheer brilliance and he shows absolutely no self-control when it comes to sharing the gory details!

Well, I hope you're feeling much better today! What, no gory details?

  3. Sounds like you need 2 bathrooms for this ordeal... don't think you can share the throne. Hope you two start feeling better soon.

  4. Crikey - that sucks. Both the hernia and the stomach issues. At least you have your kitties to entertain you lol

Doing well today. As for the cats, they were at times content to snuggle in bed. But Dudo couldn't understand why we wouldn't pick up his toys and play with him while were in the bathrooms!

  5. Oh, dear heavens, what a scene that must have been! You running in, then "Here's a PILLOW... I can't HELP you" *LOL*... two of you, both feeling bad... oh my oh my oh my.

I hope you're both feeling great soon.
Thanks thanks thanks for the treat of the furry boys in the bag! I just love those two :)

We are both so much better today. We even went out for coffee this morning! And the sun is shining and people are swimming! And Dudo and Moose are still the centre of the Universe.

  6. And Ron was that way yesterday morning! What the heck's going on??
You poor guys...I hope things return to some semblance of normal soon.
If I may ask, what caused your hernia? Heavy lifting?

No idea what caused the hernia. I guess it's all the drudge work I'm required to do. So sorry about Ron. Hope he's feeling much better today. (He didn't catch it from me.)

Now THAT would be a trip. Actually, they like getting into bags, but Dudo would have a panic attack if we actually took him anywhere.

  8. Jeesh! Somehow the stomach bug sweeping my small town in western Massachusetts (I'm considering nailing the door shut like an old zombie movie) has reached all the way to your neck of the woods. Talk about a super bug.
I can't imagine the inconvenience of having a hernia AND a round of vomiting.
    I hope it's only a 24 hour thing.

    1. Doing really well today. Tuesday night, after returning from the doctor and kneeling in the bathroom, I wondered if that was what he meant by "anything strenuous."

  9. So sorry to hear about all this. At least it didn't happen while you were visiting the DD. take care. Hernias are no fun.

  10. You two are in the wars. Among girlfriends, the nice thing to do is hold your friend's hair out of the way while she throws up after drinking too much. Clearly this would be of no value to you, but I am not sure the point of holding a head.

Hope you are all better now.

That's exactly what I told San Geraldo: You hold someone's HAIR, not their head. But his mother actually gently held their heads when they were kids. And, thanks, I am all better!

  11. Andrew beat me to the punch! I've been a hair holder before, but never the kneeler with my hair being held. I definitely haven't been a head holder/holdee. :)

I hope you both feel better, and good luck with the surgery!

You, Andrew, and I went to the same school. I've been a hair holder in my life, too, but never a head holder. We're both better today. So excited about the surgery...

  12. In this instance I am like San Geraldo: I would actually vomit at the sound of someone vomiting. No empathy, though, just vomit.

"No empathy, though, just vomit." I laughed out loud. I have to confess (on behalf of San Geraldo), when I started to throw up I knew his first thought was, "Oh, no, I hope I don't have the same thing." (And he admitted it later.)

Inguinal. It ticks me off. I didn't think I HAD any weak spots "in the groin muscle."

    2. Oh, that's 'good'; inguinal are easier to fix than the other types.
      good luck.

  14. Well lets hope that it's a fast moving virus and that you both recover soon. Always the way isn't it - if one gets something, the other invariably follows. Feel better.

  15. Oh hell! What a how-d-you-do, Mitch! Hope you can get over it muy rapido. - and I do NOT mean so that you can concentrate on your upcoming hernia surgery. I trust the antics of D & M can keep you entertained enough to be distracted. I'm sure they'll be doing their best.

Poor Dudo is going to be bent out of shape when I don't let him on my lap after the surgery. Moose has this thing about requiring us to get down on the floor with him. I'm going to be very unpopular for a while.

    2. Well, they'll just have to put up with it - while you'll have to endure their sulks.

  16. Porcelain bowl hugfest ~ BTDT many times and I pray never to do it again. Stomach bugs come from out of nowhere and then you are at it's mercy.
I sure hope your hernia doesn't cause anymore problems for you. End of April seems so far away.
The kitties will have to take care of the both of you soon!!

I can't count on these cats for any recuperative care (other than loving). Moose will be annoyed when I don't get down on the floor to cuddle with him. Dudo will be annoyed when I don't let him on my lap. Right now, the hernia is simply an annoyance because I have to limit activity. Hate to have to wait so long for the surgery, but would hate even more to be out of commission while our nephew and niece-in-law are in town.
