Here's To The Lady Who Lunches

During her five-week stay in hospital and rehab, My Mother The Dowager Duchess wasn't very anxious to have her picture taken. She felt in need of a haircut, a manicure, and some healthy color in her cheeks. We thought she still looked beautiful, but I respected her wishes... well, mostly (click here).

The day after The Duchess returned to her apartment, the Kid Brother came over and the four of us went to Hana, a nearby Asian Fusion restaurant (about a .25-mile/.4-km walk). I snapped a picture of my mother in the elevator and in the lobby. She still wasn't thrilled... but she's awfully cooperative.

The Dowager Duchess did her nails her first day home. She went out and had her hair cut last week. She's as beautiful as ever and is so happy to be home and back in charge.

IN THE ELEVATOR FOR HER FIRST LUNCH OUT.
IN THE LOBBY.
(OF COURSE, SHE KNITTED THAT HAT.)
THE MANICURE ...
AND SALMON TERIYAKI.

My mother is not one of "those" ladies who lunch.  Still, everybody rise...
(And, yes, Elaine Stritch, the Dowager Duchess at least does at times "still wear a hat.")

And you'd be so proud of her, too. In her younger days, she bought expensive nail polish in traditional colors. Now, she gets it cheap and has a good time.

She is a fine woman, but I don't know if there's much "typical" about her.

  8. While the circumstances were unfortunate, it sounds like you had some good quality time with your mother. Pride in appearance is a good indicator of how someone is feeling.

The trip didn't turn out the way we had expected... which was a very good thing. I knew my mother was on the mend when I walked into rehab one day to find her filing her nails.

The woman is like a fine wine. Even better with [a little] age.

  10. I had a neighbor who was unexpectedly in the hospital, I stopped by to visit and she didn't really want to see anyone, I asked if there was anything I could do, thinking of her cat, she said they cat will be find for a couple of days, could you please bring me my makeup bag, I feel so out of place without my face,

I would have found the need for her "face" endearing if she hadn't so easily dismissed the cat. Poor thing. Certainly not the way my mother's priorities work. One of the first things she told me to do was water her thirsty plants.

  11. I didn't know there was a nail polish called salmon teriyaki. Neat.

Of course, I had to see if there might possibly a nail polish called "Salmon Teriyaki." To my disappointment, I could only find "Salmon." I was surprised however to find no "Teriyaki Nail Polish."

    2. Bummer. I was so hopeful. I suppose I will have to stay with Jungle Red.

  12. The Dowager Duchess probably wouldn't agree, but I think she's looking better than ever!
I'm glad she's recuperated so amazingly well, and that she's up for lunching again. Love those glam nails!

She's certainly looking better than she did last year. I bought her some nail polish the day before we came home. So she's got metallic silver as well as a golden mustard waiting in the wings.

Thanks so much for your visit and for this brilliant comment. My mother will be flattered. I think she'll rather leave the story telling to me -- although she insists I exaggerate (I do NOT). But we'll see what she has to say about the idea.
