A Whale Of A Tale Of The Tail Of Dickie Dragon

Our niece Lindy says Dudo looks like Kate Moss. He's nice to look at, loves to pose, and his "head shots" always look like he's sucking in his cheeks giving him that undernourished supermodel look (not that ALL supermodels have that undernourished look, but it IS one of the looks). Also, he seems to always know exactly how to tilt his head for best effect.

(Click any image for a tall tale... tail.)

MOOSE (LEFT) AND DUDO THE SUPERMODEL.

I'm fascinated by cats' tails (and tales of cats, in case you hadn't noticed). Our cat Dobie, in California, was long-haired with a huge (gigantic) fluffy tail. It had no tensile strength and just softly billowed in his wake. His brother Maynard (who was excruciatingly neurotic and of course we loved him), had identical markings but medium hair. His tail was almost prehensile.

When San Geraldo and I had our bed & breakfast hotel in Palm Springs, Maynard would walk out onto the patio, pass under one of the aluminum chairs, hook his tail to the underside as he went, and drag the chair along the patio behind him. Every single day for two years.

And every single day (for two years), the moving chair would scare the crap out of Maynard and he'd run back inside.

DOBIE (AGE 13) AND HIS TAIL (ALSO AGE 13).

Dudo's tail snaps, and curls, and waves. And when he lies idle, his tail seems to always be perfectly positioned to complement his pose. Sometimes, he even holds it in place.

Musy's tail is soft and gentle and often gets in his way. So this is the tail of Dudo.

SORRY. EVEN DUDO HAS HAD ENOUGH.

This song hasn't stopped playing in my head since I began thinking about tail... oops, I mean tails. The Kid Brother had the record a very, very long time ago. And I, of course, would listen to it with him. He would never sing along, but I was expected to. I still know it by heart. It's a whale of a tale...

And the long and the short of it is true...

Dobie and Maynard were challenging, being black. Dudo and Moose have great markings. And not only does Dudo hold a pose, he's got permanent eye-liner.

Probably not for many, many years (as long as Dudo and Moose are around) and then only if one shows up in a shelter. I've got nothing against no tail!

    2. Maynard and Dobie - best cat names ever!

Jerry loved the names but had no idea where I got them. (I think South Dakota only had one TV station when he was a kid.)

  4. We live in the country, and Sundance once wandered under a hanging spool of flypaper -- the sticky stuff -- and got it wrapped around her tail. She tore through the house, thinking she was being pursued by all the stuff that she was catching with the paper and dragging along with her. We had to pull her out from under Tom's bed, and I untangled the mess while he hugged the terrified feline and fought her squirming. But at least it was just the one time. Wish I had a video ...

Our cat Thelma (California) gave herself the same kind of scare when she got her head caught in the loop of a little plastic grocery bag. Until that time, she was afraid of nothing. After that time, just the rustle of a plastic bag sent her flying under the bed. And they say cats can't be trained!

  5. What an alert character Dudo is! Look at those eyes! He knows what's goin on. His tail is almost snake-like! has a life of its own.
Quite the model alright.......Moose looks bored compared to Dudo.
Great photos Mitchell and what a great fascination you have.

Moose sees the camera and thinks, 'Oh, not again.' Dudo sees the camera and asks, 'Is my tail alright?' Dudo doesn't miss anything. Move a picture on the wall, a piece of furniture, a plant. He enters the room and immediately notices... and inspects. Nothing can come into the house without his approval. He even watches me unpack groceries.

  7. I used to think they were nearly identical, but seeing them together, they really are quite different, both handsome fellas.

When we got them from the shelter, the staff gave us tricks for telling them apart -- like, Dudo's profile has a bump. They were with us a day or two and we realized they were dramatically different. I'm glad you noticed that.

  9. Endlessly entertaining, cats are. At one point we had 5, one which had 3 legs and one eye, so maybe it was only 4 and 3/4. Dudo's tail is very expressive. Thanks for sharing the photos. Keep them coming! What is Moose's forte?

We've come so close to taking in another one. But I know we'd then be on OUR way to 5. Our nephew and niece have 13, one with 3 legs and both eyes!

So, I remain pointless... I had to look up the reference and it still didn't ring any bells. Mid-video, it came back to me. I don't know why that song didn't click with me when I was a kid (but it still didn't -- maybe it was the way Kirk Douglas swivelled his non-existent hips). Blow me down and pick me up.

  11. Lovely post - but anything featuring D &/or M is a 'winner' in my books.
Do they still chase their own tails? My Noodles does get these occasional tizzies with his tail. I think most cats grow out of it though N is now about 13/14. Whenever one cat approaches close to another they always seem to have a compulsion to give the other's tail a cagey sniff as though it was an independent creature requiring investigation, a snake or worm, perhaps. Endlessly fascinating.

I'm putting together photos of Moose. He deserves equal time. The boys adore each other, but Dudo can be a bit bossy.

  12. Dudo needs an agent. I sense a cat food commercial in his future ... or maybe high-end cat clothes?

Tuxedo's tail fascinates me, too. There are times it lays limp, hanging over the edge of a chair, but when he's frisky, feeling proud or especially handsome, it is at full staff, and waving proudly; when he's angry, it's whip-quick, like a weapon.

Dudo and Tuxedo sound very much alike. And oh how I wish Dudo would be discovered and make us rich.
