It's A Circus (Circo, Cirque du Soleil)

San Geraldo and I love Cirque du Soleil. We've seen most of the traveling shows and every permanent show they produce in Las Vegas (except for "One," the Michael Jackson show).

When we were new to Spain, Cirque du Soleil came to Sevilla (however, there they only called it Circo del Sol). Click here for that story.

When San Geraldo saw that Cirque du Soleil was coming to Málaga and would only be here a few days, we talked to Tynan and Elena and we all agreed the six of us should go. We had a ball. Well, one of the performers had a bunch of balls — that he juggled. Then again, as my father would have said, they ALL had balls.

San Geraldo and I hadn't seen this particular show, "Varekai," which is a version of the Greek myth of Icarus who, due to his own arrogance, flew too close to the sun with his wings made of feathers and wax. The wings melted and plunged him into the sea. Varekai begins as Icarus falls but, instead of dying in the sea, he lands in a forest filled with exotic creatures.

And, because it's Cirque du Soleil, the creatures are all incredible acrobats and aerialists.

THE FOREST DENIZENS.

SAN GERALDO AND YOURS TRULY DOING OUR AERIAL ACT.
I  REALLY WANT THAT HAT
AMAZING,
"WE CAN DO THAT!"
AND AFTER WE DID THAT.

  1. Oh WOW! What an experience. I've never been to one of these... would love to go. How long (hours) is a performance? It seems the intensity would be nearly overwhelming.

This show as 2 hours, with a 20-minute intermission. I could have watched more, but the seats were SO uncomfortable!

  2. I have always wanted to see one of their live performances. Lucky you!

We've now seen 5 of their traveling shows. And, in Vegas, we even saw a few of the shows twice. Go, if you have the chance!

  3. What a lush, exotic performance; could you and San G sneak me in next time?

No need to sneak! We'll try to plan in advance next time.

I had some great photos during the comedy warm-up, but stopped taking pictures during the show. Anyway, I never could have matched the quality of these official photos from Cirque du Soleil. I'm amazed by how different each show is from the others.

  6. Like most, I've only seen them on telly, and invariably they've only been one part of a larger show. But even as such they never fail to astonish. The imagination alone put into their acts is extraordinary. Seeing an entire programme of their antics must be sublimely exciting, taking one back to the times when as kids we were easily enthralled - and here with good reason.

Everything about it has me in awe. And no circus animals... except for the human kind.

  7. We are still waiting for them to come close to Smallville--they did perform in Atlanta .... four+ hours away--because Carlos really wants to see them live.

    Love the photos!

I don't think anything can really prepare you for being right there ... live. Wish it would closer to you than Atlanta, but maybe you should plan a little get-away next time. If only to make Carlos happy.

I'm sure this tour ends in Belize. They're going to stage it on your decks.

  11. Would love to see one of their performances live. Must be incredible to watch, Mitch. You guys have that 'aerial act' down to a T. Must have taken a lot of practice!!

Jerry and I practice that aerial act only briefly. That kind of thing is very easy for us (in our imaginations).

  12. How exciting, because I've seen only two Cirque shows, and one was Varekai! I saw it on tour, and saw Love (the Beatles one) in Vegas. Both shows had me in awe. Very magical! I'm familiar with some of the other shows, especially the soundtracks. Oh, now I want to see more, and break out my music and programs. :)

We LOVED "Love." (And Jerry and his sister were really impressed with the 6-months pregnant woman who played Lady Madonna... really! Maybe I should write a blog post about that.) "O" is phenomenal!

  15. We saw Varekai last year when it came to the town we were living in at the time. Enjoyed it thoroughly, as we have all of the Cirque shows we have seen. We saw the road version of "One". There was a young, moon walking child in attendance, and proper MJ attire, who knew every move. He was invited onstage at one point. His parents were beaming.

That moon-walking child would have been a joy to see. We moved from Las Vegas before we had a chance to see One. Maybe we'll get to see it in Spain.

  16. It's a great show - I saw it when it first opened in Montreal - took a chance on getting a cancellation at curtain time. And they certainly do have balls.

  17. Oh but i love Cirque.
However in the first time I went I was assaulted by the clowns when they discovered me nodding off (I was post-call) it's worth a blog entry; it was rather embarrassing. Now when I go I make certain to be caffeinated.
