Cyclones, Lampposts, And Uncool Cats

San Geraldo's cyclonic winds were back overnight and into Friday morning. The winds and the rain kept him awake. I received a photo taken by Juan Carlos who was on his way to work around 9 and saw that an outside light had been blown off and crashed into the roof of one of the permanent concession booths near our house. This particular booth has never been used in our three years here, so by the time I left for coffee, it had been demolished.

With a low of 9C (48F) and a high of  15C (59F), and with wet sea air, we were  all feeling the chill. I don't have heat in my office, so I plugged in a space heater. Dudo liked the heat. When I turned it off as I was leaving the house, he headed into Jerry's heated office and cozied up to Moose.

JUAN CARLOS SNAPPED THIS ON HIS WAY TO WORK.
LATER, ON MY WAY TO COFFEE.

DUDO KEEPING HIS TOOTSIES WARM IN MY OFFICE... JUST TO BE NEAR ME.
SNUGGLING TOGETHER IN A ROOM WITH REAL HEAT.
GERALDO'S SAINTLINESS BEING TESTED FRIDAY NIGHT.

  1. Yikes, that is cold and cyclonic! We have been a little cyclonic, but only cool at 66F. It has warmed up now but I am slightly underdressed with T shirt and shorts. The long pants will be on momentarily because the sun is about to go behind the trees. SG looks cold and Dudo has the right idea. Max is under our bed to stay warm.

And admittedly our blood has thinned over the years. Still now shorts for us for a while!

  2. Brave Jerry to be out there!! It does look chilly too.
Boy, it didn't take the clean-up crew very long to tidy the area up! So efficient!
Dudo is one smart cookie! They are the sweetest kitties, Mitch.

You well understand the damp chill off the water. It can be more raw than the temperature would have you think. Still, it's not Nova Scotia!

  3. I know those winds can be mighty intimidating especially the howling and ferocity. Anything can come flying at you and tumbling down, so be extra special vigilant even under that hoodie!

    Purrrrr!!

The winds really gained momentum late yesterday and through the night, but everything seemed to stay safely where it belonged. And Moose insisted on having the window opened and closed so he could sit and debate going outside.

It's still blowing today. We've been lucky with a mostly mild winter, so I shouldn't complain.

  5. It was slightly cooler here, not much, and we had sustained winds up to 60 miles per hour for most of the day. It howled and howled around the apartment, to the dismay of the cats. Worse, one of the neighbors has some sort of wind pipe thing (not chimes, but a sort of pan pipe) that sounded the same three notes over and over all day very loudly. I imagine it was even more annoying for the cats and dogs in the building than it was for the humans.

I love the sounds those things (wind chimes, wind pipes, etc.) make... once! But when they repeatedly do what they're designed to do, I want to go out and violently remove them (and I'm not the violent type). So glad none of our close neighbors have ever had them.

I really have nothing to complain about when it comes to weather. Our version of winter doesn't even last 2 months.

  7. I think you are mistaken... Dudo really wanted to be near that radiator ;-)

  9. All I can think of is this: in the US, it would have taken months to tear down that structure. The lengthy public hearings to decide to tear it down, over the objections of the loud but tiny local historic preservation group and the homeless advocacy group (who insist the abandoned kiosk is used as shelter, read toilet, by the homeless), the preparation and release of a request for proposals, including an evaluation of bids by a panel of local planning and engineering staff, the selection of a bidder, subsequently challenged by a losing bidder, more public hearings, awarding of the contract to the contractor with dubious ties to one of the city council members, interruptions due to the selected contractor accidentally knocking over a fire hydrant or utility pole, the work stoppage because the contractor files for bankruptcy in the middle of the job, a labor dispute just for fun, then, finally, the city comes in cleans up the mess, as usual, being sternly criticized in the local press for wasting taxpayers' money on a job that could have been completed in 24 hours if they had only used city workers (those overpaid, lazy, union people) from the start.

Been there. Done that. Don't you hate living in a socialist country?

I'm sure there are plenty of actions here that don't go as quickly and as easily, but it is amazing how simple some things can be. It helps to live in a resort community. Appearances are important.

  10. Poor San G; don't blame him for being unhappy. The pooches are as enslaved by comfort as Dudo is...

More cheesecake for both of you!

Jerry's attitude has been better lately. Of course it helps that the cyclonic winds have stopped (at least for the time being).

  11. Oh, your little sweeties! (I don't include S.G. in the term on this occasion.) All rivalries forgotten when they want to keep warm.
My family have had cats before which used each other as hot water bottles but not my present three. However, two of them will use me as such, and one will get jealous if he's not the first to claim my 'heat'. I watch him sulking.

Dudo and Moose spend a lot of their time snuggled together or at least touching. It's brotherly love. Even in summer... They could both be lying spread eagle on their backs to stay cool and still their paws, shoulders, heads, or something, will be in contact.
