Too Many Cooks

I've been at it again. Cooking almost every day now. San Geraldo, not to be outdone, cooked up a big pot of chili while also baking four loaves of Brown Sugar Banana-Date Bread. Show off!

I had to clean up after us both. Take a look at the photos and tell me who YOU'D rather clean up after. (I'm not asking who you'd rather have cook for you!)

THE FIRST TIME I'VE EVER HAD TO WASH A CANDLE.
("SOMEONE" MIGHT HAVE CONSIDERED MOVING IT BEFORE HE COOKED.)

Chef Mitchell
THIS IS WHAT I'VE BEEN COOKING WITH EVERY DAY.
BELGIAN CHOCOLATE PROTEIN POWDER.
THIS IS THE MESS I MAKE.

Click here to see the complete, page-long recipe for San Geraldo's mess (the banana-date bread, not the chili). See below for my neat and complete recipe.

Mitchell-is-Moving's Super-Delicious Braun-Blended Gourmet Belgian-Chocolate–Flavoured Whey Concentrate Protein Shake
Step 1: Mix 1 scoop of protein powder with 200ml (6.7628 US fluid ounces) of semi-skimmed milk (or water).

Don't make it easy for the clean-up woman (or man)...

  1. I don't cook very often but when I do I'm told I'm neat and organized, and I clean the pots and pans as I go.

I do the same. Or DID the same; I can't remember the last time I actually cooked something that required much organization. Jerry is a kitchen catastrophe. Thank god, what he cooks/bakes is so phenomenal.

  2. In the monastery, we noticed that our brothers of Italian extraction (or others who just happened to make good Italian food) apparently needed to use very single pot in the kitchen. None of which they ever cleaned along the way. We might, and often did, enjoy a wonderful dinner, but walking into the kitchen afterward to clean up was always a challenge.

Maybe Jerry's Italian! Our nephew is a chef. He's also a natural disaster in the kitchen. But, like Jerry, he can get away with it because what he serves up is always so good.

Is that spouse/same-spouse or spouse/other-spouse? In our house, the rule is Jerry cooks, I clean up. And I am NOT complaining. I'd rather clean up after him than eat my own cooking.

  4. Good Grief! Haven't you two ever learned that it's so much easier to clean up as you go along? Well, maybe if I had someone cleaning up at the end I wouldn't consider that either, but, jeez, Mitchell, you spoil San Geraldo! Must be love ;-)

Jerry never has and never will learn that... well CARE that it's easier to clean up as you go. And he could leave the mess for days! Anyway, he spoils me, too.

  6. The sign of an excellent cook is the mess they left behind!! What can I say?
Mind you, your Belgian chocolate protein powder sounds good!!

Well then San Geraldo is a kitchen genius. This protein powder is the best tasting I've ever had in my life. It even tastes good mixed only with water.

  7. I think you and I both know who gets the best deal. ;-) I suppose one of the pluses of having a small kitchen like we do is that there is less space to mess up.

Our kitchen is small but there's good work surfaces for Jerry to mess up. We've had huge kitchens and he still managed to cover every square inch with mess. He used to like to put dirty pots, pans and dishes on the floor (I have no idea why); but that's where I drew the line. Even I have my limits.

  8. I love to use every pot and create a great meal. I do help with the clean up. No complaints so far

Jerry's grandmother was apparently the same way. If she could dirty three pots when she only needed one... why not?!? Honestly, I enjoy the clean up. It's very satisfying to see how easily it all comes back together. Besides, he feeds me really well.

  9. I make frightful messes when I cook. I seem to use every utensil and pan even making small dishes.

Jerry is the same way. He'll use three different bowls when one would work just fine. Or he'll start in one pan, decide it's too small, and work his way up.

  10. Cleaning up after cooking or, in my case, after warming food up, may be regarded as an unpleasant necessity, but really, there are limits! Next thing is that you'll be telling us that you and/or S.G. make the beds every morning!

I can't imagine what the house would look like with you and Jerry in it! As for making the bed, yes I do; no, he doesn't.

  11. Once again Carlos and San Geraldo are two-of-a-kind.
Carlos can make a salad for dinner and somehow I have to scrub the stove afterwards!

We are clearly the saints! I wash the kitchen walls after every meal.

  12. @mitchell: spouse/same-spouse cooks/cleans, in my case it's husband. now I can bake better than he does, and he cleans up after me. but I use as few dishes as possible to make it easy on him.
