Say, Watermelon!

My sister Dale used to say "Watermelon!!!" instead of "Cheese!!!" when she smiled for a photo. It would result in a big, still cheesy, smile.

WATERMELON!!!

As for San Geraldo, this is his idea of lunch. A bit of egg salad and a little slice of watermelon.

NO CHEESE.

Cheese!!! But did you have watermelon SLICES or one quarter of a watermelon? I think you guys are more rational eaters than we are.

I inherited all my father's slides from the 50s and 60s. A great collection of memories.

It was delicious and way too much. But I of course ate it all.

  5. I used to grow watermelons called 'moon and stars'. Have you ever seen/had one?

I've never heard of that. Jerry recently bought "sandia negra" (black watermelon). The pink was much richer/darker and it's supposed to be juicy and sweet (it was).

I never cooperated. But I remember Dale also sometimes saying, "Limburger!!!"

I still do. I first would smile too big. Then not at all. Then I developed "camera smile" (a smile I never exhibited in real life). I still hate it but I've gotten better at it lately./

  8. As a 'cheese' substitute we'd run the gamut of the product ('Gorgonzola' was a favourite), though our vocabulary was then nowhere near as extensive as in Monty Python's cheese shop sketch.

The only word I would ever cooperate with was when I was told to "smile and say 'shit'."

Well, if that's not where cheesy smile came from, let's say it did. (I'm so clever.) We have been having watermelon or canteloupe just about every day with lunch. Perfect. (Today was canteloupe.)

Wasn't I though (a cute child)?!? Oh, and my sister was, too.

Kitchen-challenged as I am, there is never a good time of year to fire up the ovens.

  11. Watermelon isn't a word that produces a smile, but Dale still managed to have a cute smile.

I agree. It had nothing to do with watermelon. She would yell, "WATERMELON!!!" Then she'd smile.
