Shadows On The Wall

We spent about two hours in Estepona on Wednesday and I've now spent three days blogging about it. And there's more to come.

The residential buildings that surround Orchidarium Estepona are of a not unusual, late 20th-century style here. Mostly boxy and basic in white stucco with the addition of terraces, and maybe some arches and tile.

But these particular buildings become works of art with the addition of beautifully executed botanical murals. In some cases, due to the addition of painted shadows, the real looked painted and the painted look real. (Click the images and you'll see what I mean.)

In the winter, let me bring the spring to you...

  1. What a great way to decorate a what would otherwise be a boring facade! i love the way they cast the shadows in paint as well.

The quality of the art is exceptional, but those shadows really complete it.

We'll have to get back to see the orchids in bloom, but also to see more of the town. We did briefly see some very nice fountains and public sculptures.

  3. Lovely murals are a joy, thanks very much for sharing them with us Mitchell. If my resident artist was not fully booked for the next two years, then that person would be kept busy up a ladder ding something similar on our walls.

It's tempting to paint one or all our brick walls on the terrace and do something similar. But I won't.

  6. I believe this type of art is called tromp l'oeil, designed to fool the eye.

  7. I especially like the climbing vines with the pink blossoms. If you hadn't told me they were painted on the building, I would never have realized they weren't real, live, plants! So I guess you do horticulture! ;-)

Some of the painting did actually trick me and I had to look a second time. Nope, no horticulture; I STILL haven't been paid for it.

I don't think we've seen it all, either. Will definitely have to explore.
