The Glass Curtain

We had our entire terrace enclosed in a glass curtain (cortina de cristal) this week — glass panels that slide individually to the ends and then fold in to stack vertically. It's like adding another 30 square meters (323 square feet) to our living space and it looks incredible. And San Geraldo can no longer complain about the cyclonic winds destroying his plants and making his life miserable. The furniture and plants aren't back in place. But we can get that all done today even though it's raining!

(Click the images for crystal clear views.)

I was up at 7:30 every morning to greet the contractors. I didn't enjoy that part of things. However, Thursday morning's 7:30 sunrise — which I would normally sleep through — made it all worthwhile.

  1. WOW! Looks wonderful!
Now that ought to keep your plants (and Jerry) in their place.

Jerry is going to have to find something else to complain about. I don't think los cyclonicos will be a problem anymore. He's outside planting right now!

  3. That looks fabulous! Mitchell, now you have a tremendous time-consuming task to exercise your OCD ;) You can always give me a call if you need any help cleaning those glass panels even thought my OCD is always tested and completely satisfied at home. Beautiful sunrise!

Moose and Dudo love it out there. We're going to move their play "tree" outside to give them even better views (and, of course, we'll buy them a new one for inside).

It is so uplifting and really extends our living space. Jerry is outside planting amaryllis.

  6. What a great idea! I love that you can move them for fresh air when it is nice out too. No worries of cats going missing now either. So nice to be able to enjoy that deck year round.

It really has changed everything. And the inside stays so much cleaner. No dust/beach sand/pollen blowing through the house.

  10. That looks fabulous! I love that you can slide all the glass to the end to open or close it as needed. Magnificent sunrise, too. You were even awake enough to take a photo of it! How long did it take for the glass curtain to be installed?

I stumbled onto the terrace for the sunrise shots. The camera stabilizes itself! The installation only took 4 days. We were expecting it to take 6.

  11. Amazing! You'll enjoy that space a lot more now, I'm sure. Being able to close off the bad weather and those frigid temperatures (like, er, 15ºC) will be nice. :)

    1. What about cleaning? Do they fold so that you can clean the outsides easily?

Well, we've already been saved from a windy, rainy day and it was ONLY 13C this morning when we got up. Brrrrrr.... Cleaning is a breeze. They all fold in. I'll share photos of that soon.

The glassed-in terrace has already shown its worth. WIndy last night again. We had the windows and door open to the terrace and didn't notice a thing. Cool out today (well, that obviously is relative) and we've got door and windows open again and the entire apartment is warm (almost too warm; may have to open a terrace window).
