A Dowager Duchess Don't

In 1987 when we were living in Southern Connecticut, San Geraldo had a business trip to San Francisco. I was going with him. It was three months after my father's death and My Mother The Dowager Duchess was about to turn 60. So we invited her along.

My mother and I sat next to each other on the plane. San Geraldo was one row back. As boarding continued, a very attractive woman came through the door and walked down the aisle toward us. She had red hair and was dressed in teal blue from head to toe.

As the woman approached, The Duchess commented in a stage whisper, "How beautiful."

We hadn't noticed that behind her was a little boy. He also had red hair and was dressed entirely in teal blue.

The Duchess stage-whispered, "Cute."

A moment later, an extremely large man came lumbering down the aisle. He had red hair and also wore teal blue, top to bottom. A matched set.

The Duchess harrumphed, "Well that's just a bit too much!"

AND DON'T WORRY WHAT THE DUCHESS MIGHT HAVE  SAID.
SHE HAD A TEAL BLUE "JOGGING SUIT." SHE DIDN'T JOG.

Because I'm tacky...

I had never seen the video before either. I've been walking around singing "Because I'm tacky" ever since.

  2. Great story on the plane!
Sounds all too familiar to me.....travelling with Ron and his mother. Many funny moments,eh?
Now, let me see which outfit has possibilities.....OK, the one in lower right corner at least has a unifying colour running throughout.....yellow/gold. And some inspiration was needed.
But the others such plainly hurt the eyes!!

The one on the lower right had something of the Pippy Longstocking look to her!

Although I wouldn't wear them, lower left and lower right I think are fun. The rest I find hard on my eyes (and stomach) and top right just drives me nuts.

  5. One of my main pet peeves is when couples dress alike (especially gay/lesbian couples). I hate that with a passion!

    1. However, in the interests of full disclosure, I should reveal that I often dress quite tackily (a la that video) but only in the privacy of my own home. RARELY do I make the faux pas of wearing such outfits out in public. In public I appear to be quite a conservative dresser.

  6. I think I could get away with the look of the bottom right panel. Not saying it wouldn't be tacky! The top left seems totally lackluster and uninspired.

    1. I was in boring basic black when I took most of these pictures. I wonder what they thought of me.

  7. Yikes, couples should not dress matchy poopoo except for maybe a formal event (like tie color matching something. Do tourists even think what they put in their suitcase?!?

The matching look drives me nuts... even worse than some of the wild combinations. But, sadly, I think many of these tourists give a lot of thought to their outfits.

  8. That's the first Weird Al video I've seen in decades and it had me on the floor! I can still be heard repeating his classic from long ago: "Eat it, eat it, if it gets cold, reheat it."

I didn't even realize Weird Al was still doing these. And now I've got "Eat it" playing in my head. Will have to watch it again.

  9. The video outdoes Austin Powers - and probably pre-dates him as well.

I agree re Austin Powers. The video was created in 2014!

  10. Jay and I frequently find ourselves wearing the same colors, we dress in opposite ends of the condo, in the house in Lexington on different floors, and yet we find ourselves coordinated. Hey why not!

Looking like we tried to match makes me nuts, so Jerry now knows that if I'm dressed first he needs to call out and ask what color I'm wearing. If we show up wearing the same colors, I go back and change. Nuts!

It's funny now... well, it was funny then, but her stage whisper could be very embarrassing. "Shhh, Ma, they can hear you!"
