Grandpa Sam's Pants

My maternal grandfather was, I'm told, quite dashing in his youth. Tall, blond, with smokey gray eyes. It was said he dressed well, too.

I was scanning old photos and came across two from my grandparents' 66th wedding anniversary party in 1982.

For the event, which my mother hosted, I flew down from Boston and sculpted chopped liver into the number "66." At the time, I thought it was hideous and somewhat obscene. After seeing the photo, I haven't changed my opinion. (Click the images for full servings.)

The other photo from that day is of my grandparents. My grandfather died just after their next anniversary, at the age of 93 (more or less). And my grandmother followed exactly a year later.

I have no idea who did my grandfather's shopping, but his anniversary outfit looks like something out of ... well, out of the pages of this blog.

He did, however, make the peak lapel look so swell...

You don't scare me anymore. I know it's not really you. It's not... is it?!?

  2. Your grandfather was a snappy dresser! My Dad was known for his "Herb Tarlick" suits back in the day too.
    Have a good day!

I don't remember reacted to this outfit at the time. I'm shocked.

I guess if you have a grandfather who dresses like that, there's nothing left to do but sculpt chopped liver.

My grandfather tended to wear suit and tie to events, but I don't remember that look!

My grandmother wore a dark tweed suit with color sewn in. Very understated to complement (complement???) my grandfather's duds.

  6. I don't know which disturbs me more ... the chopped liver or the suit that looks like chopped liver!

I agree. I thought the chopped liver was bad until I saw that get-up.

It makes you want to run to the kitchen and do something with chopped liver, doesn't it?

  9. Thanks for the charming post of your charming looking grandparents, Mitch. And I hate to admit it, but there was a time when my very beloved partner of 36 years may well have left the house looking something like this, assuming he was the ultimate in spiffiness. I have improved his taste somewhat, if only to check with me. Sigh. He'd fit right in at Fuengirola.

Anyway, can anyone else see a wee dark haired lady in the middle of your grandmother's flower? Or do I need that cataract surgery sooner than the doctor says?

I am sitting and laughing about your wee dark haired lady. I have zoomed in and in and in because at a glance I knew exactly what you meant. It appears to be simply a space between flowers and ribbons revealing a bit of the dark tween lapel. But it definitely looks like a little head!

  10. Hmmm, chopped liver in the shape of 66. Or, 99 if you approach it from the other side of the table. How did it taste?

My mother's chopped liver was always excellent no matter what I did to it.

  11. I look forward to reaching the point in life of thinking, I like that pattern, who cares I will wear it. I love the fabric in the suit. Great picture.

I'm still not so sure. I like the idea of being fashionable at 92. Then again, it would be nice to no longer give a crap.

  12. Now I know how DNA promotes the affinity for, in your case ~ mis-matched patterns(keep them coming). I do believe he felt very proud as your GM did too.

Pate is an acquired taste which I thankfully enjoy ~ 66 is a bit grey, me thinks!

Remember, that was "chopped liver" and not "paté." The color tends to be a bit less rich (my mother put hard-boiled eggs in hers). But the color is definitely off in the photo. It's old and faded. I tried to adjust but the chopped liver started to look bizarre... well MORE bizarre.

The chopped liver is definitely scary. And it turns out one of my cousins (daughter of my cousin) has kept a picture of it all these years, too! She thought her grandmother, my mother's sister, had created it.
