Chocolate And Barrel Cactus

San Geraldo and I were back Wednesday at Viveros Guzman (the unbelievable garden center in Alhaurín de la Torre, about 30 minutes away). We bought more plants and pots for inside and on the terrace. Some things need to be transplanted, so for now I'll show you what we brought home. I'll share photos again once they're planted and positioned.

(Click the images. You won't believe how big some things get.)

FICUS MICROCARPA, BONSAI. ALSO KNOWN AS:
CHINESE, MALAYAN, OR TAIWAN BANYAN; INDIAN LAUREL; CURTAIN FIG; OR GAJUMARU.
FOR THE DRACAENA BEHIND IT,
WHICH MAY NEVER MOVE AGAIN!
A QUIRKY CENTERPIECE FOR THE TABLE ON THE TERRACE.
IT ATTACKED SAN GERALDO AT THE GARDEN CENTER.
OF COURSE WE HAD LUNCH AT PAPAS FRITAS Y HUEVOS.
DESSERT WAS NATILLAS DE CHOCOLATE!
NOTICE SAN GERALDO PULLING AWAY
BEFORE I COULD GET THIS OLIVE TREE IN THE CAR?!?
I WANTED IT FOR THE TERRACE [IN MY DREAMS].

  1. Exciting and yummy day, it seems!
    Is that a Baobab??

  2. That last one would weigh the car down , no? I also love the huge pot you took home. The cactus scares me. I'm not a cactus person. I only like pricks of a certain kind.

That last one would probably crash our third-floor terrace down to zero! I love any kind of cactus but, like you, I only like pricks of a certain kind.

  3. Now, in this post YOU remind me of Carlos and SG reminds me of me. Oh how many times I've had to yank Carlos from a garden center because he saw the perfect .....

I could buy everything! It's a good thing our terrace isn't high enough for things like that... and couldn't support the weight. Tell Carlos I have the perfect viveros for him. If you come to Spain, we can go!

Those old olive trees are brilliant sculptures. Jerry and I agreed it's a good thing we don't have a house with gardens here.

  5. @maddie - YOU WOULD! ;-b

I like the barrel cactus; wonder if it will ever bloom for you?

I hope it will bloom. Every other cactus we've had here has bloomed for us... except our big Christmas cactus, but then that's not REALLY a cactus anyway!

  6. Apparently you are not allowed to doddle, glad you made it home after he tried to drive away. The cactus is a great idea for the patio, the kitties are unlikely to try and maim it. I love that little banyan.

The little banyan is actually an ancient olive. I updated the caption. Sorry about that. Jerry, too, wishes we could take home a bunch of those huge olive trees.

  7. Olive tree needs to live with you guys, hear me!

Those cacti are so nice. The bonsai intrigues me to know end. Tried nurturing one many years ago.

    Chocolate OK you guys!

We'll see what success we have with the bonsia. I already discovered that this one wants full sunshine, which is not what we were planning to give it. So, it's been moved!

  9. those sorts of cacti are everywhere here; we have several in the front yard - they are practically weeds.

The Getty Museum in LA has a beautiful and dramatic barrel cactus garden. Have you seen it? We'd love to have the space for it!
