Still Smiling

We were supposed to have our windows washed Monday morning. The glass curtain is fairly easily done, but I'm lazy. Anyway, the winds were blowing so hard (San Geraldo's ciclónicos) and rain was on the way, so we decided to delay. I went for a walk (a blow?) under blue and cloudy dramatic skies. I had little company. It then blew and rained all night and is supposed to be worse today.

To cap off the drama, I've got "the dentist" this afternoon. Except for a disaster in Washington DC in the mid-'80s when all four of my impacted wisdom teeth were pulled by a sadist, I've never had anything but cleanings. I've spent years bragging about how I love going to the dentist. When I was working, I would schedule my cleaning at the start of the work day and would then sit in the chair for an hour without having to do or say a thing. So much better than work. (And such a comfy chair.)

But those days are gone. I might even have to soon have a lower tooth or two pulled (too much bone exposed), which might result in my getting braces (brackets) and finally straightening my bottom teeth to my satisfaction (and maybe even the top ones, too). Still, I'm not looking forward to today's appointment — especially since it's scheduled for the afternoon, which makes me wonder what I should do about lunch. Yes, THIS is what I stew about.

Who wants their teeth done by the Marquis de Sade? My Washington D.C. oral surgeon...

  1. Yesterday's walk looks wonderful! All to yourself and none of those 'plaid/stripe' people coming at you!!
Good luck today at the dentist, Mitch. Not my favourite places to be.....when I was 5 years old I jumped out of the dentist's chair, out the of the building and down the street. I am not that bad now....but close to it sometimes!
I am certain you are much stronger and mature than I am.......sending positive energy your way (just in case).

I did miss having any opportunity to snap a photo of a winning combination. Other than that, what a pleasant walk. Dentist was a breeze!

Dentist today was of course a breeze (a very gentle breeze as opposed to the gale-force winds that were blowing).

  3. Oh how beautiful! Lucky you to have that all to yourself.
Good luck at the dentist today. I always schedule my appointments first thing in the morning. I can't stand thinking about going to the dentist all day!

I prefer morning apartments but I haven't had that option. I did stew during the day, but the appointment was the easiest I've ever had. 15 minutes and my uppers sparkle!

  4. Uh oh....the dentist is the worst! I'm right there with you, my friend--I go tomorrow morning at 8am to have a lot of work done. To say I dread tomorrow is putting it mildly.

    Good luck to you!

I'll be sending good thoughts your way while you're in the dentist's chair. Truth is, i was being overly dramatic. And my appointment could not have been easier or more pleasant... And I love my clean and shiny teeth. Another appointment next week!

  5. I know many people, including my wife, who hate dentists. She was an Army brat and Army dentists traumatized her. I've had every procedure a dentist can perform and I've experienced very little pain.

My father saw a dentist when he was in the Army and hated him so much he didn't go again for 37 years. He was lucky to have never have any problems until then. I've taken much better care of mine.

  6. I am now so afraid of the dentist which only began in 2009. Fear just writing about this fact.
Your teeth are magnificent from what I have always noticed. Gees, I sure hope your visit is not too painful. Will be thinking about you laying on the chaise lounge.

Such a ghost town when the weather doesn't co-operate.

It was bizarre to see the streets and beach so completely deserted Monday. More people out today in the wind and rain! Thanks regarding my teeth. I have never liked them and routinely receive compliments on them lately. Go figure. The appointment today was an absolute pleasure. I'll stop being a drama queen!

  7. Teeth betray us as we age. I've had root canals, extractions, caps, bridges -- you name it. Good thing I have no fear of the dentist. But the one thing I never had was wisdom teeth. A dentist x-rayed me once and they weren't hiding, impacted under the bone -- no, they were just totally non-existent. So either I have no wisdom OR I'm on a higher evolutionary plane than the rest of you neanderthals. I prefer to believe the latter.

I figure you are much more evolved. What could possibly be so "wise" about teeth that usually have to be removed?!?

  8. Stewing about lunch? How about, instead, a nice warm, easily chew-able bowl of Irish stew to reward yourself afterward? You can get it...oh, I don't know. Dublin? Hope you survived just fine. I fear a lot of potential catastrophes should I outlive my teeth/veneers and all the dental work I and my parents invested in many years ago. What can we do, Mitchell, but keep smiling?!

Nothing to worry about, although I wouldn't mind a little trip to Dublin... when it's warmer there! Today's visit to the dentist was the quickest and easiest clean I've ever had. Since I have no veneers or dental work yet, maybe if I get it now there's a good chance I'll outlive it all!

  10. I always love the videos/songs that you include to illustrate your stories. This is one of those rare times that I guessed what it would be before I scrolled all the way down. :)

  11. I never have a problem going to the dentist and have been known to fall asleep in the chair. I have a new dentist here on the Island - the office is on the ground floor of our building and when young Tyler bends over me I do not fall asleep. That boy - and I swear he's 18 - is gorgeous - and he wears Calvin Kleins and low slung jeans. I may have to get more dental work done.

I, too, have gotten so relaxed that I've fallen asleep in the dentist's chair and then have to be told to re-open my mouth. Speaking of young Tyler, have you ever heard/seen the song about a dentist called "Dr. Long John"? (Bette Midler's version, of course)
