Good Food And Bad Dreams / Buena Comida Y Malos Sueños

La versión español está después de la versión inglés.

I DREAMED LAST night that my mother died and I hadn't even called any of her friends to let them know she was in the hospital for a week. In the dream I realized it wasn't my mother, it was my Aunt Sylvie, and my mother's friends didn't even know her. Then I thought it was my mother again and I was an awful human being. It hasn't been an easy week!

But, amid the bad dreams and weird thoughts, I have been grateful for the love (and entertainment value) of San Geraldo and our dinners out. The other night, we went to Mesón Salvador. The summer crowds continue to grow. In August it will probably be impossible to get in at any time without a reservation. Right now, if we go for dinner before 9:00, we can still get lucky.

As always, the food was as good as the welcome, the service, the love, and the hugs.

I had fried camembert with blackberry jam, followed by meatballs. San Geraldo had Russian Salad, very popular here (this version was a mixture of potatoes, mayo, egg, corn, tuna...), and followed that with pijota (hake).

However, San Geraldo really followed his Russian Salad with the remainder of my blackberry jam on his bread, and then immediately ate the fish. If you ask me, it was disgusting! But at least he didn't dunk his bread in his gin and tonic.

  1. The first dish looks amazing. But those fish???? YUCK. They are giving me the chills. I would have had just drank Gin and Tonics all night.

The fish tasted delicious. But i can't get beyond the appearance. AND it's a lot of work to eat. Too much like cooking for me. You can be proud of Jerry; he finished his entire drink... almost.

  2. "But at least he didn't dunk his bread in his gin and tonic." - if SG ever did that in front of maddie, she would die (and so would I)!

    queso frito looks muy bueno!

The queso frito is amazing. Jerry dunks his bread in coke or pepsi (disgusting enough). He developed the habit when he was a could and would get his braces tightened. It felt good on his sore gums. If he had grown up drinking gin, the habit would have been much more dangerous.

  3. Unsettling dreams like that linger long past the night. Never tried to fry camembert before. Does it have a little dusting of some sort on it?

Is that a cooking question?!? Jeez! Probably dusted with just a bit of flour... so I'm told.

  4. I love fried camembert especially with a mixed salad - as for bad dreams: I always blamed the pickled onions and several pints of warm English beer for that.

I rarely remember my dreams, and I'm grateful for that. Pints of warm beer and pickled onions would definitely give me nightmares.

In Sevilla, we used to go to a place that served fried camembert with tomato marmalade. It was exquisite!

  6. I've yet to have a dream about my Mother. I guess I don't have any unfinished business with her. But it does seem strange---not one dream.

I still sometimes have dreams about my sister. And they are often very telling... as was this one about my mother and Sylvie.

The fish is delicious, but I can't either. It has to be better disguised (no tail, no head, no bones) for me to enjoy it.

I know! But when it's served to you without that appearance, it's so good.

  9. Mitch, I had all sorts of dreams for a long time about my mum, and she died in 1982 at the way too young age of 63. Sometimes she is here and just fine and other times she is fine but "something bad" happened once. And other times she has just died. Again. The dreams have pretty much gone away lately though.

I'm trying not to think about those fish lips...

Same here. My sister died 1981 and I only rarely have those dreams now. They were very common for years. And I think these photos answer the question: Do fish have lips? (But maybe not.)

  10. I will come to the defense of the fish, they look like fish! Not neat little fillets, but real fish. I bet the flesh under the skin was wonderful.

Dreams - I am glad I easily forget most of mine. I like to call them hauntings.

The fish is exceptionally delicious, but I'm one of those who doesn't tend to like to be reminded about what exactly I'm eating.

I forget most of my dreams, too. And sometimes I even try and force them out of my mind when I wake up. This one just wouldn't go away. But it was a healthy revelation.

  11. Jim says "Ron, listen to this post from Mitch!"

He mentions hake and ouch I didn't listen any more.

Hake is obviously not my favourite.

Unfortunately rich foods are not allowed on my diet. Such sad state of affairs.

    Cheers anywho!!

    Winks.

Oh, the hake is so unbelievably delicious. A fish I really love. But I can't eat it when it looks like this. Besides, way too much "cooking" involved -- you have to peel it from the bone, take off the head, and tail... and look into those eyes!

  12. CUT IT OUT!! lol
Being a 'fish lover' myself even that fish/hake is pushing it for me!!
Yes, your dish looks interesting and I think I could easily devour it!!

When my aunt died (my mother's sister) I was devastated. I hadn't realized how important she was in my life. These feelings/dreams will end when it's time to let Aunt Sylvie go and be at peace.

Jerry loved it but even he said it was a bit too much work. Meson Salvador has plenty of other fish options that are much less work. Then again, Spaniards have an art to these things.

  13. None of the best dunk anything in their gin and tonic
I am relieved to know you have a true gentleman there.
