Dudo Doesn't Want Pomegranate / Dudo No Quiere Granada

WE MAY HAVE only been in Granada for a day but, here on my blog, I'm still there. Before we came home, we had lunch at an excellent restaurant, Jardines Alberto, recommended by our guide Federico, across the street from the entrance to the Alhambra. I decided to try a couple of local specialties and I wasn't disappointed. First I had Nasrid Style Chicken, and then a traditional dessert called pionono, a recipe from the town of Santa Fe in the province of Granada. Pionono is a thin layer of pastry rolled into a cylinder, fermented with different kinds of syrup, and topped with toasted cream. When we got home Wednesday evening, Dudo was interested in a different dessert.

PUEDE QUE SOLO hayamos estado en Granada por un día pero, aquí en mi blog, todavía estoy allí. Antes de llegar a casa, almorzamos en un excelente restaurante, Jardines Alberto, recomendado por nuestro guía Federico, al otro lado de la calle de la entrada de la Alhambra. Decidí probar un par de especialidades locales y no me decepcionó. Primero fue una especialidad de la casa, Pollo Al Estilo Nazarí, y luego un postre tradicional llamado pionono, una receta del pueblo de Santa Fe en la provincia de Granada. Pionono es una fina capa de hojaldre enrollada en un cilindro, fermentada con diferentes tipos de jarabe, y cubierta con crema tostada. Cuando llegamos a casa el Miércoles por la noche, Dudo estaba interesado en un postre diferente.

Inside The Pomegranate / Dentro De Granada

THE MOORISH RULERS of the Iberian Peninsula were amazingly advanced in architecture, science, construction, and the arts. Our guide Federico pointed out how modern artists and architects were strongly influenced by Granada's 14th-century Alhambra. Dutch artist M.C. Escher first visited in 1922 and said he was fascinated by the "regular division of the plane." He went on to make it his passion. I've always found Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi's work incredible but never appreciated how much he, too, was influenced by the Alhambra and Moorish architecture.

Also surprising was how colorful the interiors would have been. The windows were stained glass (one skylight remains). The plaster walls were smothered in color and some color remains to this day. Floors were festooned with rugs. It's hard to imagine the flamboyance until you see hints of it from the faded colors that survived.

LOS GOBERNANTES ÁRABES de la Península Ibérica fueron increíblemente avanzados en arquitectura, ciencia, ingeniería, y arte. Nuestro guía Federico señaló cómo los artistas y arquitectos modernos fueron fuertemente influenciados por la Alhambra de Granada del siglo XIV. Artista holandés M.C. Escher visitó por primera vez en 1922 y dijo que estaba fascinado por la "división regular de un plano". Continuó haciéndolo su pasión. Siempre me pareció increíble la obra del arquitecto español Antoni Gaudí, pero nunca me di cuenta de lo mucho que también estaba influenciado por la arquitectura árabe y de la Alhambra.

También me sorprendió lo coloridos que habrían sido los interiores. Las ventanas eran vidrieras (queda una claraboya). Las paredes de yeso estaban cubiertas de color y aún queda algo de color. Los pisos estaban adornados con alfombras. Es difícil imaginar la extravagancia hasta que veas indicios de los colores desvaídos que sobrevivieron.

The Pomegranate / La Granada

WE DROVE TO Granada Wednesday with Judy for a private tour of the Alhambra (the palace and fortress complex) and the Generalife (architect's gardens). The Alhambra is a walled city within a walled city, which was built beginning in the 8th century atop old Roman fortifications. It was forgotten and then restored and expanded in the 14th century by the Nasrid emir. In 1492, after "reconquest," it became the royal court of Ferdinand and Isabella. San Geraldo found a private guide, Federico, who met us with tickets in hand and took us on the best tour I've ever experienced. Federico is a historian, a charming and exceptional guide who pointed out so many fascinating details we never would have caught on our own. Our first (and only) test during our private tour of the Alhambra in Granada was to say what the Spanish word was for "pomegranate." After a little hesitation, I remembered. Granada!

CONDUJIMOS A GRANADA el miércoles con Judy para una visita privada de la Alhambra (el palacio y complejo de la fortaleza) y el Generalife (jardines del arquitecto). La Alhambra es una ciudad amurallada dentro de una ciudad amurallada, que se construyó a partir del siglo VIII sobre antiguas fortificaciones romanas. Fue olvidado y luego restaurado y expandido en el siglo XIV por el emir nazarí. En 1492, después de la "reconquista", se convirtió en la corte real de Fernando e Isabel. Pyramids Or Podiatry / Pirámide O Podología

CONTRIBUTING SIGNIFICANTLY TO my depression problems these past weeks has been the pain I've been experiencing in my hip — since September. From everything I've read I think it's probably sciatica. I had a sonogram two weeks ago and will follow up soon. Meanwhile, the pain has been unpleasant — waking me from a sound sleep if I roll in the wrong direction. Walking, however, feels great. So, I do as much of that as I can. Monday, I took a long walk. I stopped along the way to photograph a new sand sculpture with a solar-powered fountain and discovered that the artist was selling jewelry. I liked him and wanted to support him, so I bought a pendant I didn't need. A pyramid (or a triangle) — ceramic and fused glass. He placed the cord around my neck and I continued my walk. An hour later, when I returned home, I realized I was bending and moving painlessly. I don't seriously believe in the power of the pyramid. However...

Note 1:
I took off the pendant when I went to bed. I woke up in pain. It's back around my neck. Just in case.

Note 2:
See the final photo for what I had on my feet last night. I didn’t notice until we were walking home after dinner. I wonder if that's causing the hip problem.

CONTRIBUIR SIGNIFICATIVAMENTE A mis problemas de depresión estas últimas semanas ha sido el dolor que he estado experimentando en mi cadera — desde septiembre. De todo lo que he leído, creo que probablemente sea ciática. Me hicieron una ecografía hace dos semanas y la seguiré pronto. Mientras tanto, el dolor ha sido desagradable  — despertándome de un sueño profundo si giro en la dirección incorrecta. Caminar, sin embargo, se siente genial. Entonces, hago tanto de eso como puedo. El lunes, di un largo paseo. Me detuve en el camino para fotografiar una nueva escultura de arena con un fuente con energía solar y descubrí que el artista estaba vendiendo joyas. Me gustaba y quería apoyarlo, así que compré un colgante que no necesitaba. Una pirámide (o un triángulo) — cerámica y vidrio fundido. JUDY BOUGHT US headgear to wear on New Year's Eve. San Geraldo was, of course, one of the Three Kings (Magi). Coincidentally, the ermine around the base of his crown matched the ermine cape belonging to his 22-greats-grandfather King Ferdinand III.

JUDY NOS COMPRÓ los artículos de sombrerería para usarlos durante la Nochevieja. San Geraldo fue, por supuesto, uno de los Reyes Magos. Casualmente, el armiño alrededor de la base de su corona combinaba con la capa de armiño que pertenecía a su tatara abuelo 22, Fernando III el Santo.
