Making Waves

In case you've missed it (and, yes, some people have), we're moving. The pipes burst in our Sevilla apartment in December. It took more than three weeks for 12 damaged pipes (really no more than hoses) to be replaced. By that time, permanent damage was done. The water heater has no thermostatic control (which we think is what caused the problem in the first place), so we have to unplug between uses or the water boils. Added to that our own "vertical garden" of mold growth along with damaged walls, ceilings and floors, and the once-elegant apartment is not very pleasant at this point. We had planned a move to the beach for late in the year or early next. But these headaches made us decide to move things up. So, in just a little over two weeks, we will be living on the Mediterranean Sea.

LOOKING FROM THE HALL OFF THE BEDROOMS BACK TO THE ENTRY.

The most recent entertainment in the current apartment is the new skateboard park. Who knew you could create one (without even trying) from wood-laminate flooring? We're practicing for our new life by the sea by surfing the waves of our apartment.

GREAT FOR PRACTICING SKI JUMPS, TOO..
DUDO DOESN'T QUITE "GET" OUR SURREAL FLOORS.

WAVES WHERE THEY'RE SUPPOSED TO BE. OUR BEACH AS I WALKED IT A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO..

  1. The thing is Mitch that at the beach you're not going to get all those religious processions...unless you count the ones of the young attractive people at the beach.

The "processing" should be, if not quite so historic, very picturesque!

  2. Time to get out your Corgi and Dinky cars - you have the ideal play-environment there!

The cats love running down the hall, turning at full speed, and sliding from one side of the hill to the other. I just keep tripping over the peaked wood. One of these days, there'll be reason for a lawsuit!

We're imagining them on the big terrace (and imagining keeping them off the big railings)!

  4. Oh Dear Mitch,
Trials and tribulations in the Mitch household. I predict the move will be just right as I'm a fatalist who believed that everything happens for a purpose, and usually for the best.
    Good luck with everything Mitch.
    Much love.

Thanks. All is going very smoothly (except the floors). I'm not a fatalist myself exactly. I don't believe things happen for a reason. I just think things happen. Then I try to give them reason! No problems with this one.

  5. Whoa that is some damaged wood. Do I need to send you both some tropical shirts for your beach life?

Oh, no tropical shirts for me. San Geraldo looks great in them. I look like a scarecrow (to myself at least)!

  6. Just think what it will look like when you empty the bookcases and move heavier furniture. hope you have a hard hat. I'll also hope you send a change of address.

Walking in our hallway is treacherous. I've tripped a number of times. No injuries yet! A hard hat wouldn't be a bad idea.

Once we settled here in Sevilla, a reader asked me if I was now going to change the name of my blog. No need, was my response. The apartment disaster here simply made it easier to move on.

  8. Wow, it's so horrible that they have allowed this damage to such a lovely apartment. How will they rent it again? What a mess. It's exciting to think of the new world of the Mediterranean-as-view! And, if I read correctly between the lines, there may be more traveling in Europe in the future, eh, as you save money living in your new spot? Oh boy!

The building manager (and I assume his boss the owner) are not very bright. These apartments are hard enough to rent given the economic crisis. But this time around they'll first have to make all the repairs. It took them 6 months to rent it last time. I can't imagine how much money they'll lose this time around. Not very forward thinking.

And, yes, we're hoping the move will give us more travel money! (Also, it's much cheaper to travel to and from Málaga than to and from Sevilla!)

  9. Please tell me there's is no chance of storm surges on the Mediterranean! Those beaches look look absolutely beautiful but they seem awfully low level. Are there safeguards or am I being paranoid?

    1. Ms. Sparrow:
The Mediterranean is a "closed sea," so storms can't stir up to the same levels as on the oceans. No hurricanes, no tidal problems that I know of... although an earthquake could cause a tsunami, I'm sure, AND I've read that Egypt faces a tidal wave over the next few years due to the rising waters of the Mediterranean Sea.

That being said, there is apparently little to no risk along the southern coast of Spain. So, I think you should stop worrying!

Do you suppose San Geraldo would notice if I left now and just waited for him there?
