Step By Step

I took another long walk the other day — west east (mostly) on the Paseo. Fuengirola has 7.5 km (about 4.7 miles) of beach and the Paseo fronts most of it. When you reach the end of the paseo in that westerly easterly direction, you've just about reached the border of the city of Benalmádena (Ben-ahl-MAH-deh-nah). Fuengirola along the coast is mostly flat and very accessible. Benalmádena, on the other hand, is mostly not. But it's got some great views.

Usually, where the Paseo ends is where I stop. That's a 3.1-km walk from our house. But Saturday, I decided to cross onto the sand and continue. There's a winding staircase that leads up to a huge cliffside resort — and the main coast road into Benalmádena (although the center of town is still at least another 7 km — and then back).

It's a quicker walk if you don't stay down below on the beach. And there are, of course, buses (and trains), But where's the fun in that?

STEPPING OFF THE PASEO AND ONTO THE BEACH.
YOU CAN SEE THE RESORT AT THE TOP OF THE CLIFF IN CENTER BACKGROUND.
GETTING CLOSER.

I walked to the bottom of the steps. This was the closest I've come to climbing. It was a glorious, warm, sunny day for a walk. But, I was a bit overheated and decided that my 7-km roundtrip was enough for a summer day. So, I'll wait for the weather to cool a bit — maybe another month — and then I'll take a trip it to the top (and who knows where from there).

DON'T THOSE STEPS LOOK INVITING?
LOOKING BACK EAST WEST (MOSTLY).  NO CLIFFS.
UNLIKE IN FUENGIROLA, THERE ARE SEVERAL HOUSES RIGHT ON THE BEACH.
CONTINUING EAST-ISH WEST-ISH.  TIME TO GET HOME FOR A LATE LUNCH A LA SAN GERALDO.

  1. I like walking so the steps definitely looks inviting. Step by step is a piece of history for me Because I didn't live at that time.

Oh, I just love when I share a song or story and people tell me they weren't even born yet!

  2. Step by step, little by little.....
Eventually you will have done the entire coast!
Interesting, Mitch, to see a hill in this area....quite different from your town, eh?
I LOVE to walk but also not in the heat. It was 23C today at the beach....perfect for walking.

I'll have to share more photos of the area. We're at the base of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Hills and mountains everywhere except right here in town. It's been into the mid- to high-30s here these last couple of weeks. The rest of the summer had been very comfortable.

  3. Now this is very intriguing, so many steps and not enough time ~~ would head up them too if I was there. The change in elevation and geographical-ness (lol) just adds "Oh I wonder what is around that corner and hill?" Can't wait for more!

  4. I love walking on the beach. I definitely would wait until the weather is cooler though for those steps, although I am sure the view is nice from up there. Cheers!

Did a long walk in the other direction today. And, yes, it's definitely still to warm for a climb.

  6. If I take a long walk, I usually get public transport home. You can get further that way. It looks very dry there. You are in need of some rain perhaps.

That's usually how San Geraldo does it. Or taxi there and walk back.

Weather here is very much like Southern California. There's a dry season and a rainy season. It very rarely rains in summer.

  7. I've seen and been too many beaches - but none like this: with cliffs, sand, and the ocean sharing the same slice of earth. It's gorgeous. Glad you didn't choose the not-fun route (buses, trains).

San Diego County (California) has a very similar look. The first time I was in Southern Spain I felt very much at home.

Once the weather cools, I'll be sure to share the view from all different parts.
