Quiet Nights

It is so much more peaceful here this week. No more revelers stumbling along the Paseo at 2:00 in the morning. No more partiers lingering in the bars and restaurants downstairs. No more vacationing neighbors arriving noisily home in the middle of night. Our parking lot is mostly empty. And during the night, if I open the bedroom window, I can hear the gentle sound of the surf.

Quiet nights.

Too bad the mornings aren't the same. Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, the sand-perfecting truck was hard at work on the beach directly below our windows. By 7:00 a.m.!

In addition, the usual street cleaning team is up and about and making as much noise as possible. There's Juan with his leaf blower and, of course, the truck making ever-lengthening loops as it sweeps, vacuums, and washes its way along the Paseo. This morning, there was a tractor leveling off the beach that had been filtered and smoothed the previous two mornings.

OK. It's a clean town. The city takes good care of things. But couldn't they do it maybe just a little bit later? Even Dudo has been frowning.

And, no, I'm not really complaining. It's a city. It's a tourist destination. Things have to be maintained. I simply thought I'd share the serenity.

7:11 WEDNESDAY MORNING.

GOOD MORNING, JUAN.

In this video, it sounds like a wrench got swept up into the works. (I swear I didn't do it.) Could this mean it's broken???

The obstruction was easily cleared and it was back to work. In the background, you can hear the street sweeper, the leaf blower, trucks backing up, cars, and motos. Ah, paradise.

TEN HOURS LATER, SO FEW PEOPLE AROUND THAT AREAS OF THE BEACH REMAIN VIRGIN.
MY SHADOW SELF OER THE VIRGIN SANDS.

And now to take you back to those quiet nights...

  1. Dudo is definitely not happy. If I was Juan, I'd be afraid ... very afraid!

I didn't know Dudo could frown. He had been sound asleep cuddled up next to me and he suddenly sat up and glared in the direction of the noise.

  2. I guess there's a downside even when you live in paradise. I once lived downtown and the garbage was picked up at 5:30 am. No going back to sleep after all that racket.

In Sevilla, the dumpsters were emptied at 12:30 a.m. after the bars closed. Then the street cleaners arrived. THEN, the beer kegs were delivered downstairs. On those ancient little streets the noise reverberated. Even this doesn't compare.

  4. I've never seen a beach sweeper (cleaner?) before... guess I thought the tide took care of making everything fresh again.

Lucky for us the surf doesn't come that far up.

Oh, I don't want to live a quiet life. I'm just happy to see the summer rush end and I wouldn't mind listening to the surf at sunrise instead all the machinery.

  7. Oh, how I wish I could hear the gentle sound of the surf :) Would it be audible if you tried to record it for us, some lovely evening? :)

I actually recorded it that morning but I deleted it. Even with low surf, you can hear it. But I'll wait for a high-surf day and promise to share it.

  8. Workers who make a noise always seem to start their days early.

Or overnight... I'm sure that's somewhere in Murphy's Laws.

  9. I don't know which is more gorgeous, the sunrises or the Queen's voice.

The first time I heard Queen Latifah sing something from the Big Band Era, I was amazed. She's incredible. I was initially going to use a version of this by Diana Krall. But I liked this even better.

  10. "quiet night' brought this reader to a standstill. Oh! for a night of quiet! no TV in the other room; no music in this room. I'll be back to read what was in the rest of the piece.
