More Than Just Milk And Cereal

I'm still dragging around a bit. Maybe it's not allergies. I never can tell for certain.

Whatever it is, these last two mornings made me feel that some good old-fashioned home cooking was in order. Time for me to head into the kitchen to work my magic for a feel-better breakfast.

Ingredients:
Fresh melon — I used "piel de sapa" (toad skin melon); it's a cross between cantaloupe and honeydew
Yogurt — I used pear yogurt — because it's what was in the fridge
Raisins — I used "pasas moscatel" (Muscatel raisins) — because that's what we had
Special K — the breakfast cereal, not the hallucinogenic formally known as Ketamine... Although, if you use the hallucinogenic, you might actually believe this is a brilliant recipe.

IT'S CALLED TOAD SKIN MELON BECAUSE ...
THE SKIN LOOKS LIKE THAT OF A TOAD

Step 1:  Cut the melon into bite-sized chunks. Note: I used two knives, but you might be able to do this with only one.
Step 2:  Empty yogurt container into cereal bowl.
Step 3:  Add the previously prepared melon
Step 4:  Add raisins, to taste (I've always wanted to say "to taste")
Step 5:  Add some Special K (around a cup; you'll know when to stop... I've always wanted to say that, too.)

TADA!!!

The reason I'm having doubts as to whether I've really been suffering an allergy attack or something more "bug-like" is because, although my cold symptoms have lessened, my stomach is now a bit "off."

Then again, it could be my cooking.

Maybe, I should try milk and cereal (or cereal and milk)...

It was a cold. But it's over. Now it's just back to allergies. My home-cooking must have helped.

I wish that were all it took! But it's definitely important.

  4. As I was reading and scrolling down I kept thinking the whole thing was going into a blender and you'd have a smoothie.... nevermind what my mind envisioned as the result. If I liked melon I'd try that ... honest... it does sound good.

Yogurt, melon, and some other fruit would make a good Smoothie. I'm not too sure about the addition of raisins and corn flakes.

  5. I love the name "toad skin melon." It reminds me of a place in Arkansas called Toad Suck. There is an Army Corp of Engineers project there with a ferry and the whole place is often referred to as Toad Suck Ferry. When I was in seminary, one of the seminarians from the Diocese of Little Rock said that his lifetime ambition was to be pastor of Toad Suck Ferry. Personally, I think that is a Halloween costume waiting to happen.

The melon name perfectly describes it when you see it whole.

Toad Suck Ferry! Where I grew up we pronounced "fairy" and "ferry" differently. But not in most of the US. What would your costume look like?

It's delicious (and you don't eat the toad's skin). With some of the things you've had your fingers in, I would think toad skin would be the least of your worries.

  9. Sounds like we have the same bug... it's a bad one if it drove you to cookery! (Btw, I've always wanted to try growing piel de sapo melons.)

Is that my recipes or just me? (I don't know which would be worse for breakfast.)

  11. I am so over cooking - but I like your version much better than mine, might even be able to give it a shot! Sorry you have the crud - hopefully it will clear up soon.

My high-end version of cooking is "open a can of this and add it to a can of that." The crud is history! Thanks.

  12. I used to grow melons; i had a passion for the interesting ones, not like the pale orange rubbishy ones ubiquitous in the stores.
