Hung Like A Horse[radish], Tastes Like Custard

Although I've seen horseradish from the garden, I've never seen a truly healthy specimen. So this may come as no surprise to you but it was a (huge) surprise to me when I saw it at Ana's produce market this morning. (Click the photos and see them grow.)

RÁBANO PICANTE (BATTERIES NOT INCLUDED).

Our friends/neighbors Jean and Ray have houseguests for several days. We've gotten to know Jean and Ray's son John and his wife Nicola, and now Nicola's parents are visiting. Also charming and very easy to like. Especially since they arrived with chocolates from John and Nicola. The chocolates are from Hotel Chocolat, the only company in the UK to grow cocoa on its own plantation. They even have a hotel/spa set among the cocoa groves on the Caribbean island of Saint Lucia. Talk about a chocoholic's wet dream.

THE BOX.
THE MENU.

That's all I have for you today. I hope you find it satisfying.

  2. I wonder if horseradish is applicable to the philosophy "The Doctrine of Signatures". The mind swoons.

I suppose at worst you could take the "signature" as self-fulfilling (wink wink nudge nudge).

OK... But I don't know what you're going to do with an empty box.

  10. Is that a horseradish in your pocket or...
I just watched a program about Saint Lucia and saw a cocoa farmer do some harvesting and drying of the beans. He said the plants love the climate and grow anywhere on the island where they're planted. The island looked very interesting and inviting.

Maybe a spa (ahem, cocoa) vacation is in your future. I've never been to the Caribbean islands (except Puerto Rico).

  11. We grow our own Horseradish, but it's a bugger to feel and grate. Good quality chocs are wonderful; poor quality ones are awful.

These chocolates are definitely in the good quality category. I normally don't like these kinds of flavors (they tend to taste very artificial), but this collection was amazingly accurate.

I always thought horseradish grew in a jar.

Just long enough for two photos.

I had to eat them quickly since I was afraid they would go bad once I removed the cellophane. Really.

  13. We sold horseradish at the farmer's market... but never displayed it like "that". Did you notice how nicely that fruit/veggie box is arranged? (Probably nobody noticed... too busy checking out the horseradish)
