Blue Skies, Sunshine... The Teaser

Yesterday (Wednesday) started out like any other recent day. Gray. Cloudy. Breezy. Rainy. But in the afternoon, for no apparent reason, the sun came out and the sky and sea turned brilliant shades of happy. I went for a long walk on the beach and along the promenade.

LIFE AMONG THE RUINS. ACROSS FROM PLAZA SAN RAFAEL.
STANDING ON THE PROMENADE WITH THE BEACH BEHIND ME.
LOTS OF FISHING BOATS OFF SHORE ALL DAY.
A VIEW FROM OUR BEACH. NO BULL. (WELL, YES, BULL.)

I sat on the rocks and enjoyed the sun and the view. I headed into central Fuengirola and walked by the zoo, the history museum, and the cultural center. The rain didn't return until after sunset. What a major surprise... and treat.

TRIBUTE TO THE PESETA.
TRIBUTE TO TOURISTS
(WHO USED TO SPEND PESETAS AND NOW SPEND EUROS).
SOMEONE FISHING FROM THE JETTY IN FUENGIROLA.
I WAS MORE THAN TWO MILES (NEARLY 3 KM) FROM HOME AT THIS POINT.
ON THE ROCKS. THE MEDITERRANEAN COLORS I REMEMBER.

I checked out the Port of Fuengirola. There's a ferry to another town along the coast; there are lessons in scuba, parasailing, wind-surfing, and more; boat rides. fishing trips, and tours.

HEADING PORTSIDE.
THE PORT.  I LEFT QUICKLY... IT MADE ME MISS SPAIN!
BOATS.
YOU ARE THE FISH BENEATH MY FEET... DOCKSIDE.
I USED THE FLASH, WHICH AFFECTED THE COLOR OF THE WATER IN THE IMAGE,
AT LEAST THE FISH WERE TEMPORARILY ENLIGHTENED.

Some of it sounded very interesting. But I didn't find the port all that charming or appealing. It's lined with stores and restaurants of just about every persuasion (German, English, French, Finnish, Dutch). There might have been one or two Spanish places, as well, but I only heard Spanish spoken once by two staffers. I love the international mix, but I don't want to lose Spain. I quickly moved on. I'll only go back to  the port, I think, to see San Geraldo squeeze himself into a wet suit to go wind-surfing. I'd do it myself (go wind-surfing), but I have to take the pictures.

A BIT MORE CHARM IN FUENGIROLA CENTER.

Last night around 9 the rain returned. It rained all night and this morning the sea and sky are the same color of silver gray. The break was nice. Today it will be back to hanging pictures... after a leisurely breakfast.

  1. So they erect a monument to the Peseta...only the Spanish. Can you imagine if we built a monument to the dollar in South Beach?

I can't even think of all the implications, repercussions, outrage.

Lovely place you live in now Mitch...not that Sevilla wasn't but this is just as good only it doesn't have processions.

Yeah, I can't quite figure out the peseta monument. I'll have to see if I can learn more about the rationale behind it.

Not one procession since we've been here! We sure were spoiled. Then again, not the same amount of religious presence here, which suits me better.

  2. Aaaaaaaaaaaah, sunshine and the smell of sea air, with that little breeze off the water.... brings me back. It's been a good while since I've been seaside.

    Happy walking!

I grew up near or on the Atlantic and living on the beach as an adult has always been my fantasy.

  3. It's quite cold here this morning, so your pictures of the sea, and all those beautiful blues, have me a little green again.

Sorry, Bob. Gray, windy, rainy here again today. But not cold. I hope you warm up soon!

  4. As we say in Minneapolis, holy crap but that's nice. :-) What a gorgeous part of the world. Love the tribute to the peseta.

I laughed out loud at the "holy crap but that's nice" statement. I can just hear it being said in "Minnesotan."

  5. Oh damn! It looks like Fungirolly isn't going to be as photogenic or interestin' as that last place you were at, Los Solihull or wherever it was.

;-) Nice treat of a blue sky. Fongibrollyover saying "come on out and have a look around" mayhap?

I really was spoiled by Sevilla's enormously visible history (and pomp). This is a different world and only 2-1/2 hours away. However, I can't wait to check out the old castle and the history museum.

  6. You're missing all the rain here. But the sea looks beautiful.. and, I see... you have a lot of monuments and statues to check out ;-)

It's nothing like Sevilla, but there is plenty more to see and share. I hope you had some sunshine today (or soon)!

  7. What a pretty place to explore. I checked it out on Wikipedia and I'm looking forward to seeing photos of the castle and other sites. Wiki says that 25% of the residents there are un-Spanish!

Wikipedia has been the best place so far online for info with a bit more substance. That's why I can't wait to get to the museum and get more historical depth.

Right now, it seems like 75% of there residents are "un-Spanish"! My goal is to find out all the local haunts and start going to those.

  8. You need the cold and grey to appreciate that lovely azure sky properly! I felt nice and glowing warm from the sunshine looking at your photos, thanks!

  9. Are you ready for beach life? I think so. Take full advantage of it and soak up the rays and enjoy.
Now we need pictures of windsurfers(San Geraldo et toi). Por Favor!

    International language time!!

  10. Good to hear the sun came out for a while Mitch. I think once you are both more settled into this new town, you will begin to appreciate it's own distinctive charm. Try not to compare it to Sevilla. Hey no more processions, maybe quieter?

You're so right. Like comparing apples and oranges. I don't know about quieter though. It's a major resort town. Summer will be interesting... and apparently much more Spanish.

  11. You've managed to land in a lovely corner of the world and I'm extremely jealous. That monument to the peseta is interesting even though many Spaniards might wish for a return to their old currency instead of sticking with euros.
