Serene Mediterranean Sea

What a welcome we've had to Fuengirola. Thursday will be two weeks of well-below-average temperatures. Cloudy, rainy, windy days... mostly. Gray skies with here and there a very rare glimpse of some blue and sunshine. Despite the weather, people have been warm and friendly. Installation of internet and TV were a breeze. Shopping is convenient. And San Geraldo has started cooking at home again. There's a roast in the oven right now.

THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA. REGULARLY DESCRIBED AS "SERENE."

We were having lunch the other day at a British-owned pub and I overheard two couples (from England) chatting about their holiday. One woman puled, "But where can we go for some warm weather and sunshine?" Her husband snorted, "Well, that's why we bloody well come 'ere, in't it?!?" I feel for them. At least we're not on holiday. We'll be here for the nice weather, too.

ONE BENEFIT: LOTS OF AVAILABLE CHAISES.

I still haven't done much exploring. Fuengirola has been around since the time of the Phoenicians. Our barrio (neighborhood) is called Los Boliches. It was originally a small fishing village. Across the street from us, along the promenade is what looks like a Roman temple entrance. It was created from ruins discovered in 1984 right here in Los Boliches.

VIEW PAST THE ROMAN "ENTRANCE" TO THE BEACHES OF LOS BOLICHES.
IN BACKGROUND, THE ENTRANCE TO THE PORT OF FUENGIROLA.

The winds weren't too bad today (no "white water" in the pool), but the rain has been steady and heavy. So, I spent the day indoors.

THE POOL.  LATELY A GOOD PLACE TO PRACTICE WIND-SURFING.

One would think I'd have gotten a lot done around the house, but Dudo only wanted to snuggle with me. So, I sacrificed myself, as I so often have to do, and lounged with my Kindle (and Dudo) for a good part of the afternoon.

MOOSE AND DUDO.
"MAKE OF THESE HEARTS ONE HEART."

DUDO WOULD LOVE TO BE OUTSIDE... THAT IS, UNTIL WE OPEN THE DOOR.

DUDO JUST COULDN'T GET ENOUGH OF ME TODAY.

  1. Well...thankfully you don't have white fluffies falling as we are now. It won't last because it's March and the weather is usually wet, windy and wild....uhm...just like yours!
The kitties sure know how to snuggle...now that's something I truly miss...my kitty laying on me!

      So true (about the fluffies).

With a bit of encouragement (I forced him at first), Dudo went from refusing to sit on our laps to expecting to ALWAYS be there. We love it. Now it's Musy's turn to get the hang of it.

  2. At least you know that unbroken sun and high 20's are just around the corner.

  3. Good to see that Dudo and Moose have settled in. That last photo is great, Mitch!
I am pretty certain that the sun will shine again there for you. So different from Sevilla.

Very different from Sevilla, and we weren't quite ready to leave, so we've got some adjusting to do. But not a bad place to be "forced" to live.

  4. Please don't be jealous that we have blue skies and a 'balmy' 13c today...
(We have after all had nearly four months of grey grey and nothing but grey)
Joking aside, I bet it is going to be lovely in the summer!

Well, blue skies and 18C yesterday. (So there!) But I won't rub it in. We haven't lived in a climate that isn't mostly warm and sunny for a very long time and we couldn't probably managed it now. As you can see, we complain after two days of gray!

  5. Is Moose not such a snuggler as his brother? Love the photos.

I'll swap some of our sunshine for some of your rain. I can see it's not very windy, otherwise those beach umbrellas would be shredded, or airborne! Is the pool part of the apartment complex?

Moose is an unbelievable snuggler. We just haven't turned him into a lap cat. Neither of them would let us pick them or sit on our laps. We worked really hard first with Dudo and now we've created a monster. We now hope to do the same with Moose. He sleeps cuddled under Jerry's arm. He can't get close enough to us in bed. He loves to constantly be petted and snuggled. Just no laps! He'll get there.

I don't know what it is about those particular straw parasols on the beach, but they stand up to major wind. Regular umbrellas definitely don't.

  6. Oh, boy, this is getting exciting! Yes, you are lucky that you aren't just vacationing... that sure would be a drag.
But, you're not! You're on a new adventure, there's a roast to warm the house, and you have the two cutest darn minous (French for kitties) imaginable to snuggle with :)

    Nice to read you again!

We took a one-week vacation to Key West one year to escape some Connecticut winter. The high temp was 56F and it rained every day. No heat at the B&B and we each had one pair of jeans and one sweatshirt. We lived in those. I really feel for vacationers who have been here these past weeks!

I fall a little more in love with our boys every day.

It won't be the same as Sevilla, but I'm sure I'll find lots to share.

  8. There's nothing like a couple kitties to warm up a home. The choppy water in the pool looks downright scary! I hope you get some decent weather soon. At least you don't have several feet of snow covering everything!

The white-water pool was pretty funny. The last time I saw that was during an earthquake in Santa Barbara; well, that was a pool tsunami.

But, yes, give me white water and sea spray over snow any day!

I've heard you've been experiencing crummy weather, as well! Hope you liked this morning's post with Wednesday's sunshine. Back to gray today. But the break was nice.

  11. I can't help but thinking that "Fuengirola" is - or at least should be - a proprietary brand of juke box. When the weather improves could you have a wander and look for the factory?

We did a major "shop" today for storage units, shelving, and more. Within the next week, we should feel really settled. The cats love the view. Can't wait for them to get used to the big open terrace. Right now, they want to be out there but every little shadow chases them back inside.

  13. You seem to have good old English weather there however staying inside sniffing the roast enjoying the knowledge that warm days are not far away.

We did have what felt like good old English weather. It's warmed up enough now to just feel like some rare dreary Mediterranean weather. In the meantime, San Geraldo's cooking makes it much easier.
