Sunrise Shadow Of My Former Self

This is the semi-official next-to-last weekend of summer holiday here in Spain (there's one more week to go before school starts). It's already much more quiet and civilized in town.

Another indication of summer nearing its end is the fact that there are clouds here and there, which makes sunrise and sunset much more dramatic. I awoke this morning to gorgeous colors in the sky. So I hopped out of bed and headed to the terrace to watch the sunrise. (Click the images to experience the grandeur.)

WHAT I WOKE TO.
FROM THE TERRACE.
HERE COMES THE SUN.
DOO DOO DOO
AND I SAY...
IT'S ALRIGHT.

Of course, Dudo and Moose followed me outside. As I watched, I realized they were both sitting below me on the chaise. Usually, they look in whatever direction I'm looking. But this morning as the sun rose, they were transfixed in the opposite direction, staring at the wall.

WHAT ARE THEY LOOKING AT?
AH.  MY CLASSIC PROFILE (SHADOW TO THE LEFT OF STONE FACE).
FASCINATING.
I MADE IT MORE INTERESTING...
MOOSE NEEDED TO REACH OUT AND TOUCH...
A WHILE LATER, I WALKED INTO THE BEDROOM AND FOUND MOOSE STILL TRANSFIXED...
... AND DUDO, TOO.
I WAS TEMPTED TO GO BACK OUT AND SEE IF "I" WAS STILL THERE.

I know it hasn't been a long, cold, lonely winter (yet). But, here comes the sun.

  1. Wow, fantastic shots. In Poland we start school on 1st September.Your cats look like detectives. Maybe you should employ them in Spanish Police.

I wish they had started school 1st of September here! Dudo and Moose don't let anything pass their notice. Very entertaining... and nosy!

  2. Ahh... yes... all is well. I loved the photos AND the song. Aren't cats such great indicators of what's going on in the (their) world? Just watch them and a person becomes so much more aware. I miss having a cat... Dudo and Moose do a good job of filling that space.

Dudo and Moose have turned out to be the greatest gifts. And it's always good to know there's someone (two) in charge.

  3. I SAY it's alright! What beautiful photos, Mitchell!
And so funny how the cats are mesmerized by your antics. They are adorable. Boy, you are wide awake that early in the morning, aren't you!

Oh, that wasn't all that early. Sunrise is nearing 8:00 now. But, yes, that was early for ME to be wide awake anyway. It was just too beautiful to miss.

The cats are so easily entertained. Unfortunately, they expect to be entertained every waking minute. Thankfully, cats sleep a lot!

Reality can be spectacular sometimes, can't it? I take no credit for the morning energy. Getting out of bed by 8 a.m. once in a while is not much to brag about.

  5. Nice pics!!
My cats also are drawn to shadows.
When the sun rises on the eastern side of the bridge, the shadow of passing cars and trucks reflect on my living room wall, it drives the cats crazy.

Wouldn't it be nice to be so easily entertained? We used to have one of those laser-pointer toys for our cats in California. I have to find one for Dudo and Moose. They'd be occupied for hours... Well, on second thought, so would I...

  6. Cats, gotta love them. They are so fun to live with. I used to have a pure white blue eyed deaf cat. We did kitty sign language (stomping on floor to let her know we were home, dangling of fingers was come here for a pet etc). That sunrise is amazing.

I had never know that pure white cats tend to be deaf until a friend told me about hers. Sunrises here, especially in fall and winter, tend to be spectactular. At first, I couldn't resist get out of bed every morning to take pictures,

It's incredible what a cheapish camera and a spectacular view will produce. I also love to greet the dawn... and then go back to bed.

    2. go back to bed only if someone is there waiting for you!

  11. Are you show those eyes aren't saying "When are you going to feed me!"?

My pussies aren't just fascinated by moving shadows, they are also transfixed by moving light reflections on the walls, like when the sun shines on my watch. I'm sure yours must be too - jumping up and trying to catch them, just as they do to pesky flies which get inside, buzzing against the window to escape. It's so entertaining to watch, especially in that they take it all so seriously.

Oh, yes, our cats do the same. It was unusual, however, for Moose to remain attentive for so long. He's usually much quicker to pounce and then wander off. Dudo could stay transfixed for an hour waiting for his opportunity.

  12. first off, the fellas are adorable. I cannot get enough of their faces!

But, a few years ago Tuxedo followed me into the bathroom and sat on the counter while I brushed my teeth. Afterwards, I picked him up for "smooches"--he bows his head and deigns to let me kiss it--but then he began staring at the wall. I turned to see what he was looking at and his head snapped in the other direction looking at the wall.

Every time I turned to see what he was looking at he would look at something else.

Then I realized he was looking at the bathrooms lights reflected on the wall through my glasses and every time I turned, the dots moved.

The two of us nearly got whiplash trying to see what the other was seeing.

Do you suppose cats compare nuts on how entertaining we are? ("You should have seen what I got him to do this time!")

    2. Bob: Notes!!! Not nuts. Dudo and Moose don't even have those (but I'm sure they'd compare them if they did).
