He Won't Get Far With One Shoe

San Geraldo has big feet. Very big feet. He wears a US size 14 and a Spain size 49. His feet are wider than they used to be. It's nearly impossible to find shoes his size wherever we've been in Spain. The only ones we've found have been hideous. And the width now makes it a nightmare. Ordering from outside Spain means he would have to pay huge customs/import fees (almost the price of the shoes). So he ordered two pairs of shoes online from two very good US companies and had them delivered to My Mother The Dowager Duchess's apartment. (Click any image for the big picture.)

WHAT'S BLOOMING  IN THE DUCHESS'S KITCHEN.
AIR PLANT SHE BOUGHT NINE YEARS AGO IN SANTA BARBARA, CALIFORNIA.

The first pair of shoes arrived the next day. San Geraldo was thrilled since that was the pair he needed for the current NY weather. He tried them on. Left foot first. It was perfect. He happily picked up the other shoe.

He felt like one of Cinderella's wicked step-sisters.

He couldn't cram his right foot into that shoe no matter how hard he tried. He took the shoes off and placed them side-by-side on the floor. His "feets" were no longer too big (as Fats Waller would say). Only one foot was.

The shoes were from REI. He phoned. No problem. With huge apologies they immediately sent out a new pair, which will arrive today. I just hope they're not a matched set for the 'pair' he already received.

ONE OF THESE THINGS IS NOT LIKE THE OTHER.

Other than that, all is going well here (except for the weather). The Dowager continues to return to her old (young), fit, self. We're hoping she'll get out of rehab soon and get back to her friends and her regular routine. I'm eating better now that San Geraldo is here. He makes sure I have dinner and, last night, he cooked up a huge pot of chicken soup.

We haven't had more than a few inches of snow at a time. But the temperatures have been well below freezing almost every day since my arrival. When the wind blows off the Atlantic, we just want to run back inside. That's what The Kid Brother did this morning. He said he was coming over. When he hadn't arrived, I called him and he said. It was too cold!

AND WAY TOO MUCH TO DRINK.

UNFORTUNATELY, WENDY'S WAS THE ONLY PLACE NEAR REHAB WITH SEATS THAT DAY.

  1. Of all times for this to happen to SG! Good that it was sorted out ASAP.
Also good that your mother, Mitch, is improving daily.
    Cold? Someone finds it cold?

  2. Last night minus 13, tonight minus 12, then it will warm up ... to 20. Sigh! Hope the Dowager Duchess continues to improve, that the new shoes fit fine and that you keep your sense of humor. (Aren't American food portions often insane? To make up for the lack of quality, I suppose. Too much of a bad thing, however, is not better.)

  3. egg cream! diner! Dowager D. on the mend! All great things:)
And.... 2 new shoes of the right size while you're still here... can't beat that :)

  4. Since you detailed the shoe story, shoe size was not the euphemism I initially thought. Our retailers complain about people buying over the net from overseas and not paying tax on the goods. I wonder how they do it in Spain? How do they know what is in a package?

  5. Have been wondering how you and the DD are... you and San G are going to really appreciate the warmth when you get back home! It's currently -9 here, and will be getting down to -14.

Miss you, sending hugs and well wishes, wish I could send warmth as well.

  6. Oh blessed online purchased shoes, ain't it annoyin' sometimes. REI really came through for you, YAY!

The view of Coney Island on a winter's day.....not too many people visiting I suspect. You are so fortunate that the snow hasn't accumulated.....just those bitter Atlantic winds......brrrrr!

  7. Sorry you are so cold here, and I imagine it is much warmer in Spain this time of year. We traveled there in March one year, and the weather was wonderful, especially in Malaga. Hope your mother continues to improve.

  8. Stay warm, thank goodness San Geraldo is there to feed you. Unlike the rest of North America Vancouver Island has had some lovely weather the last few days but shhh don't tell anyone, everyone will more here :)

  9. Since you've got a clip of 'Into the Woods' I take it that S.G. wasn't tempted to suffer the fate of the Ugly Sisters in having parts of their feet amputated in order to fit on the slipper. Though. knowing how it didn't work for them it probably wouldn't be worth the effort alone, never mind the pain. Hope the replacement pair will/did fit without such drastic action.

  10. It is exactly what happened with San Geraldo's shoes that i won't order shoes online. Oy, the tsouris that would give me.

Sidenote: if I ever took a picture of Carlos snoring I think it would be the last picture I ever took.

  13. It must be quite a bother trying to locate proper shoes when one has uncommon shoe-needs. I don't envy him the task.

  14. You know what they say about fellas with big feet...they have to order shoes online.

  15. It's he opposite down here - as I type this it's 34 and very humid. Thank heavens for air conditioning. It has been many many many years since I entered a Wendys. Do they still serve hot apple dumplings?
I"m glad your mother is on the mend.
    Bye for now,
    Kirk
