Yeah, Baby She's Got It

The Greek sand clan of the god Chronos has grown since he was first introduced (click here). One day last week, I saw sculptor Ivo working on a zaftig female figure (in sand). The very next day some other characters appeared. I learned that the female figure was none other than the goddess Aphrodite.

Ivo told me he was about to add a lute-playing cherub in an empty space. So, Friday, I headed back to see what had developed. While putting the finishing touches on the cherub, Ivo said he now plans to add the god Ares. Already lolling with Chronos, Aphrodite, and the musical cherub are a winged cherub, the god Pan, and the devil, whose right hand is comfortably planted on Aphrodite's wrist. That is why, Ivo explained, the devil has a little smile on his face.

(Click any image to make them more god-like.)

IVO AMONG THE GODS WEDNESDAY.
BETWEEN CHRONOS AND APHRODITE: A CHERUB WITH A UKELELE.
THAT'S PAN ON THE RIGHT. HE'S SUPPOSED TO HAVE THE LEGS
AND HORNS OF A GOAT — AND, OF COURSE, A "PAN" FLUTE.
APHRODITE CAN CHANGE HER APPEARANCE
TO BECOME WHATEVER ONE FINDS MOST BEAUTIFUL.
I GUESS THE DEVIL LIKES HER LIKE THAT.

  1. I can't remember what now, but I too misheard lyrics in that song, but not quite like you did. Regarding the sculptures, we would say in Australia, they all look like they have been in a good paddock.

    1. In the upper midwest of the US, you would say they look corn fed.

I've never heard that expression. Will have to add it to my repertoire. Unfortunately, growing up in New York City, I don't think I knew what a paddock was until I was 18!

Cornfed is a term I only heard in movies until I met Jerry's family. Knowing Ivo's professional background, it's no surprise his characters tend to look like they just retired from the WWE!

  2. Ivo is one good sculptor! His 'gods' are quite similar to him, don't you think?
Haven't heard that song for a long while....one of many we used in 'fitness classes'.

Ivo has gotten better in the past two years. He's very entertaining. And, yes, his gods are always built like that. I'm sure it's a reflection of himself, but making them so broad at the bottom keeps them standing, too!

He's added more. I'll have to get some new pictures.

  5. I wouldn't care to meet any of them in a wrestling ring.

Oh, I don't know, Aphrodite would be interesting. Can you imagine the proportions if these same figures were to stand up?!? I'm sure Aphrodite's bottom half couldn't possible support the top half. And Chronus has a left leg that appears to be about twice as big as his right. They wouldn't be so god-like!

  6. It's amazing what people can do with a little sand, though i kinda think Aphrodite looks like a pro-wrestler in drag.

With implants? Well, never mind. I just pictured some old pro wrestlers.

  7. I am a big fan of Pan; I was glad to see him among things.

  8. That's awesome. I wonder if there's a way to preserve these for a while - before a tidal wave or kids go jumping on Aphrodites bosoms. ??

Waves don't reach that far. Ivo is there or pays someone else to be there 24 hours a day. (I saw him chase some kids away this morning.) Rain and wind can be deadly.

He does do a great job, but I really miss Paul Blane, who I've posted about a number of times. He is an exceptional artist and apprenticed under a world-famous expert sand sculptor. He has really got the engineering down. You look at some of his work and wonder how they can ever stand.
