A Torn Retina And A Spotted Dick?

I celebrated my birthday Thursday. Because it was in fact my birthday, so it seemed like the right thing to do. This is my fourth year to celebrate my birthday here in Fuengirola. It's become a tradition to go to Sandpiper Restaurant if only to have the opportunity to share the celebration with Jessica, even though she has to work.

In honor of my torn (no longer) retina, I thought I should have a defective-sounding dessert (in the UK, called pudding). So, I opted for some Spotted Dick. It's much better than it sounds. (Click here to read the original story of Spotted Dick and another traditional English, um, pudding.)

I OBSESSED WITH AESTHETICALLY ARRANGING JESSICA'S STARS AND HAPPY BIRTHDAYS.
SAN GERALDO'S SOLUTION WAS TO SHOVEL THEM INTO A PILE...
...AFTER CONSIDERING A MELTDOWN, I SATISFIED MYSELF WITH THIS.
MY SPOTTED DICK.
(OR AS JESSICA PREFERS TO CALL IT, SPOTTED RICHARD.)
SMILING DESPITE A RECENTLY TORN RETINA
AND A SPOTTED DICK.

And since I enjoyed some Spotted Dick, I thought you might enjoy a Little Richard...

  1. We call it afters or sweet here in this part of England. The pudding is the thing you eat, so I might say "is sticky toffee pudding all right for afters (darling)?" It can also depend a bit on how posh you are because posh people always say "pudding" for afters and also use words like "supper" for tea (dinner) when for me supper is only a cream cracker and a cup of cocoa before bed. I hope all that helps. How much longer is this birthday going on for? Happy birthday again xxxx

Aw, shucks, ma'am. I have a close English family member who can be posh to the extreme. Pudding, supper, etc. You can imagine the time he's had with this American! Even when I thought I was doing well, he'd correct me. I was once telling him how inexpensive my classy new shirt had been. He said, "Why do Americans have to be so polite over nothing? Why can't you just say 'cheap'?"

I can't really say much seeing as how we got the language from them and they are often rolling their eyes at things WE say. (But they sure can be entertaining...)

Jessica is awfully easy to embarrass, too. It's so much fun. Although sometimes she just rolls her eyes at us like we're a couple of juveniles.

  10. I can't believe you showed us photo of your spotted dick, although it is not as gruesome as it sounds. I like Jessica's "spotted Richard". You look fabulous for 40! Cheers!

Thanks and thanks! (But it's really not a marvelous picture. In real life I look exactly like George Clooney... except where I don't.)

  15. Had a very entertaining conversation when my aunt and cousin were visiting... they wanted to know about foods from the UK. Specifically, what my aunt called Leaky Ummm-you know! When I asked her if she meant cock-a-leeky she turned bright red, lol. I explained that it was made with chicken and leeks, hence the name. Who would have known that a 74 year old woman who still cooks for frat boys would blush so easily???

Hope your birthday month continues to be wondermous!

Nothing dirty about this one, but we at first wonder what Sweetened Carrots were sweetened with... until we finally clarified that it was Swede 'n' Carrots. Even so, we blushed, too.
