I've gone through all the closets and drawers (both kinds of drawers, in this case). I knew my mother liked to shop, but I had no idea how much.

SOCKS... THE FINAL PILE WAS TWICE THIS SIZE. |
My mother wouldn't care that I've told you about the hand-knits. She´d be proud. And she´d be even more proud they've all been donated to JASA, a wonderful social services agency without which she would not have been able to live independently this past year. Dozens of beautiful items The Duchess made and wore over the years — including a crocheted and silk-lined purse. I'll share some individual photos one of these days.
I THOUGHT I WAS DONE STACKING THE HAND-KNITS. |
THEN I WAS SURE I WAS DONE, SO I BOXED IT ALL UP. |
BUT, WAIT, THERE´S MORE!!! |
My mother would NOT be pleased I've told you about the 57 bras and 104 pairs of panties (at least I didn't include photos).
Nothing but gratitude and smiles remembering a life lived fully, independently and uniquely...
In really, REALLY nice underwear.
P.S.: Sorry to not be keeping up on your comments and blogs. I will get back to you all once I've dug myself out from under all the clothes, shoes and several hundred pairs of earrings. This may take a while. — m
Mitchell you must send some to me...
ReplyDeleteHand-made knitted items! Wow :)
ReplyDeleteOh what treasures you have uncovered here, Mitchell!!
ReplyDeleteYou are correct in that I am sure your mother would be pleased/proud they are going to a good place.
You must have thousands of memories flying through your head right now......and how could you not.
Don't worry about us bloggers, we will wait patiently for your return with more 'stories' for us.
Take care.
Oh my all that knitting, any men's knits there? She'd must have knitted something!
ReplyDeleteYou are such a scamp teasing your poor MomMim like that.
I know she is smiling down at you MITCHELL!!!!!
Winks!
Ron
It is a bittersweet reminder for us not to accumulate things and clear out clutter so our loved ones won't have to - or post them.
ReplyDeleteNo apologies necessary! So glad that her handmade treasures are going to such a good cause.
ReplyDeleteSifting, sorting and disposing, always takes up a lot of energy. So please take your time for we all know that you are very busy with an unenviable task.
ReplyDeleteI imagine all kinds of wonderful memories are coming back to you as you sort though her things.
ReplyDeleteyour mom was a knitter? WOW! so am I! looks like she made some lovely items. I hope the JASA people appreciate them all.
ReplyDeletetake time for yourself, dear. {{{{{hugs}}}}} to you and SG. and somewhere the duchess is smiling.
She would be giving you shit right now, talking about her unmentionables :) Such is the duty of those left behind. Stay strong my friend.
ReplyDeleteI remember how painful it was when my dad died and I had to go through all his things. I think about you often and know the difficulty of what you're going through. Take care my friend.
ReplyDeleteThe DD would be quite proud of the handknits but even more proud of her 'boys'. We'll wait for you... with love and hugs in plenty.
ReplyDeleteShe was stylish and beautiful on the inside and the outside. We know where you got it!

So, a difficult choice for you in deciding on a 'keepsake' then!
ReplyDeleteI Always knew, life is too short to wear cheap underwear - bravo for her enjoying the good stuff.
ReplyDeleteDon't worry about getting back to us - you have your work cut out for you. However you might want to stop trying on the earrings to see how they look... things may go faster.
ReplyDeleteMy sister who lives in NYC works for JASA she looks after people like your mother who are elderly but live independently.
ReplyDeleteOne can only imagine from whatever is on the other side of this mortal world, a SHRIEK! "
ReplyDeleteMitchell! There is a reason that they are called unmentionables!"
The hand knits are a heartbreaker. Release them in love and the knowledge that there will never be another one from the same hands.
So sorry to have read about your mother. She continues to live in your wonderful and loving stories.
Good lord, your mother really WAS my mother... xoxox
