Mere Words / Meras Palabras

YEARS AGO, SAN Geraldo had a friend who managed a gift and card shop. He had hernia surgery. San Geraldo sent him a beautiful flower arrangement. The friend wrote a very cheesy thank you note he later admitted to copying off one of his greeting cards, "Mere words cannot express..." it began.

With that in mind, here are more photos of Fuengirola's local color.

The Contortionist / El Contorsionista

DUDO WILL DO just about anything to convince me he's adorable and I need to take a nap with him. I don't always want to take a nap. But, I never need to be convinced he's adorable.

SOMETIMES, I SNEAK OUT AFTER HE'S ASLEEP. SOMETIMES, HE WAKES UP AND FOLLOWS ME. AND WE START ALL OVER AGAIN..
A VECES, ME ESCAPO DESPUÉS DE QUE ÉL ESTÁ DORMIDO. A VECES, SE DESPIERTA Y ME SIGUE. Y COMENZAMOS DE NUEVO.

Aw, Jeez / Oh, Dios

I TOOK A walk this morning to Fuengirola's castle (Sohail Castle, built in 986). I found Jesus.

City Lights / Luces De La Ciudad

I LOVED THE view from my cousins' rooftop in Brooklyn Heights. I do sometimes, but not ofen, miss those city lights.

Spring In Summer / Primavera En Verano

I'VE MENTIONED BEFORE that one of our favorite places for dinner here in Los Boliches in Fuengirola is Restaurante Primavera. Primavera means spring in both Italian and Spanish, and that's what it is, a breath of spring. Great food. All products are fresh and organic and all dishes, including desserts are made in-house. Always a warm welcome and wonderful service. Another of those very special and rare places where we're treated like family. The staff have become our friends.

And if you''re lucky, Fran will "grate your parmesan."

Y si tienes suerte, Fran "rallará tu parmesano".

WE KNEW HEAVY rain was coming on yet another day in Washington DC, so we decided to visit the National Portrait Gallery. When we arrived, we discovered that it now shared a building with the Museum of American Art. Yes, things change in 32 years. The building is magnificent with a beautiful central courtyard. The Portrait Gallery takes up the left wings and American Art fills the right. Change is good. We went right.

Our favorite works, among so many, were those of Korean artist Do-ho Suh, who studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and Yale University. He creates a "suitcase home" out of polyester fabric and stainless steel armatures.

However, if you want some lunch, you can't use Do-ho Suh's polyester microwave, and I recommend you skip the museum café. Check out the photo at bottom for our $62 lunch.

TWO MUSEUMS UNDER ONE ROOF.

Pussycat, Pussycat, I Love You / Gatito, Gatito, Te Amo

WE ADOPTED DUDO and Moose from a shelter in Sevilla more than 6 years ago. They turned 7 in July.

When we returned from our travels more than a week ago, Moose was overjoyed to see us. No attitude, just affection.

Dudo gave us attitude for about 24 hours. Not too much attitude, however; he called a truce at treat time. Since then, they will not let us out of their sight.

Dudo is on my lap right now and Moose just headed off to see San Geraldo. I can hear them talking.

So this is love.

DUDO.

Puedo escucharlos hablar.

Entonces esto es amor.

Going Underground / Pasar A La Clandestinidad

THE NEW YORK City Subway system has more stations (472) than any other in the world. It's a marvel. It can also be hot, crowded, dingy, smelly, and unpleasant. The Washington [D.C.] Metro system (91 stations) is much less crowded, dingy, smelly, and unpleasant.

But then, the New York system opened in 1904, while Washington Metro has only been around since 1976. And Washington's annual ridership is less than 2 million, while New York's is nearly 2 billion!

Washington Metro, with its much more pleasant spaces is now showing its age. Chunks of plaster are falling and two stations were closed for repair while we were there, requiring shuttle buses between stations. Escalators are being replaced and many weren't working when we needed them.

We used both transit systems. We enjoyed the convenience. And we complained. Mostly about the heat in the stations. Especially in New York.

And San Geraldo complained even more after he climbed, in the 90-degree heat (32C), the sixth longest escalator in DC, which was out of service at that moment.

Had I been with him, I might have suggested he exit at the other end of the station. But that's just me.

TRADER JOE'S IS an American specialty food market chain that we — and The Kid Brother — love. One of many things Trader Joe's is known for is Charles Shaw wine, a brand of bargain-priced wine that sells for $1.99 and is therefore known as Two-Buck Chuck.

The Kid Brother's real name is Charles and we usually call him Chuck,. I took him for our annual shopping trip to Trader Joe's in Brooklyn. He doesn't drink wine. He filled his cart with more expensive things. Eighty-Buck Chuck.

Él no bebe vino. Llenó su carrito con cosas más caras. Eighty-Buck Chuck (Chuck de Ochenta Dólares.)

We're Ba-ack / Estamos De Vuelta

I HAVE A feeling we're not in New York or Washington DC anymore.

SO, YES, WE'RE BACK IN SPAIN.
ENTONCES, SÍ, ESTAMOS DE VUELTA EN ESPAÑA.
AND CLEARLY, WE'RE IN FUENGIROLA.
Y CLARAMENTE, ESTAMOS EN FUENGIROLA.
