Use Your Imagination / Usa Tu Imaginación

WE DROVE FRIDAY to our favorite garden center, Viveros Guzman, in the town of Alhaurín de la Torre. Amazingly, we didn't buy a thing. And just look at all the temptation! But we did have lunch at the excellent restaurant inside the garden center.

Sorprendentemente, no compramos nada.

I WOULD HAVE PREFERRED "A HORSE OF A DIFFERENT COLOR."
YO PREFERÍA "UN CABALLO DE UN COLOR DIFERENTE" (SIGNIFICA "HARINA DE OTRO COSTAL").
IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE KANGAROOS, THERE ARE ALWAYS SHEEP AND COWS (AND THERE'S EVEN A RHINO).
SI NO TE GUSTAN LOS CANGUROS, SIEMPRE HAY OVEJAS Y VACAS (Y INCLUSO HAY UN RINOCERANTE).

ARE THESE FROM THE PAINTED DESERT IN ARIZONA?!?
¿¡¿SON ESTOS DEL DESIERTO PINTADO DE ARIZONA?!?
OK, NONE OF THE ABOVE, BUT THIS ONE PLANT... MAYBE NEXT TIME.
BUENO, NINGUNOS DE LOS ANTERIORES, PERO ESTA PLANTA... QUIZÁS LA PRÓXIMA VEZ.

Leaving San Diego / Saliendo De San Diego

AS I MENTIONED the other day (click here), we left our house in San Diego after only 2-1/2 years (5-1/2 years total in San Diego). The University of California, Berkeley, called out to Jerry. We considered. He said, "No, thanks." But then they called again. And again. And again. And we said, "Yes." I found a new job at Berkeley, too. Maybe I'll tell you about that some other time.
As the song in the musical Sunday In The Park With George says, "I chose and my world was shaken. So what. The choice may have been mistaken, the choosing was not. You have to move on."
As the song in the musical Into the Woods says, "Anyway. Never mind."
Here are some final photos of our last two San Diego years with photos of our kitchen and the updates we made. San Geraldo was very active in the UC San Diego GLBTQ group speaking out for domestic partner benefits among other things. That group hosted a going away party for us. That's the first photo. We both volunteered at the GLBTQ Center in San Diego and we were very involved in supporting all their efforts. The Center hosted a black-tie event (not in our honor) and we participated in the human rainbow flag photo used for the invitation. That's the last photo. See if you can find us.

Nosotros consideramos. Dijó: "No, gracias". Pero luego llamaron de nuevo. Y otra vez. Y otra vez.

I'VE GOT ONE more blog post about that house in San Diego (the two previous posts) but, for today, we're back in the present. San Geraldo and I took a 20-minute drive Wednesday to a small port in greater Marbella called Cabopino. We had lunch before heading over to the Artola Dunes immediately west of the port (and east of Marbella). At the eastern end of Artola Beach is Thieves Tower, built during Moorish rule some time before the 15th century. Preservation of the sand dunes, removal of invasive species, and the building of five elevated walkways were completed in the last couple of years.

The doctor told San Geraldo he's supposed to be walking more. The boardwalks protect 30 hectares (300,000 square meters or 3,229,173 square feet) of dunes. I'd say he followed doctor's orders. He'd say he deserves an ice cream.

From The Inside / Desde El Interior

THE OLD, OLD, old, old house in San Diego (see yesterday's post) was called a Spanish-style California Craftsman. We were the third owners (the first owners lived there for 68 years). The house was in mint condition. As you saw in yesterday's post, we did major re-landscaping (completely on our own — design and muscle). the only thing we did on the interior was to update the kitchen. We loved, loved, loved, loved the old house with it's coved ceilings, gumwood moldings, and open spaces.

We were going to live there forever. We lasted nearly 2-1/2 years.

Something Old, Old, Old, Old / Algo Viejo, Viejo, Viejo, Viejo

WHEN WE BOUGHT our house in San Diego, we called My Mother The Dowager Duchess to tell her about it.

"Mim," said San Geraldo, "It's an old, old, old, old house."

"What year was it built?" she asked.

"1927!" he exclaimed.

He had the year wrong. It was built in 1924. However, 1927 was the year the Dowager Duchess was born.

"Oh," she commented. "So, I'm old, old, old, old, old."

Shhh! Don't tell San Geraldo, but he's now the same age the Dowager Duchess was when we bought the house.

What Would Plato Say?

DO YOU REMEMBER that guy I used to see regularly on the Paseo walking and reading Quantum Physics? (Click here.) He's still walking and reading (and living dangerously). But I snuck a glimpse the other day at his current book. He's now reading Plato.

Yesterday, while San Geraldo was cooking dinner, I was visiting wtih him in the kitchen. I had taken laundry off the line but had a pile of clothes pins in the house because I didn't feel like going out in the rain to put them in their basket. So, while we talked I "arranged" the clothes pins. I even remember giving some thought to the design and stopping myself from changing it, but I didn't think anything of my behavior until San Geraldo laughed. I wonder if Plato would have anything to say about that. (Other than, "Μη με ενοχλείτε!" [Don't bother me])

[No me molestes])

AND, YES, IT BUGS ME THAT THEY WERE NOT PERFECTLY ALIGNED.
Y, SÍ, ME MOLESTA QUE NO ERAN PERFECTAMENTE ALINEADOS.
AND SPEAKING OF OBSESSIVE... "DO YOU SEE ANY BIRDS, MOOSE?"
Y HABLANDO DE OBSESIVO... "¿VES PÁJAROS, MOOSE?"

Where Hipsters Shop / Donde Compran Los Hipsters

IN YESTERDAY'S POST, I showed you some things I didn't buy. I never told you about some of the things I did buy when we were in New York in September. I bought a six-pack of gourmet ginger ale (to be consumed while there), not realizing that "gourmet" meant it didn't have a twist-off cap. That's the reason for the first item. The shop, on Smith Street, is called Exit 9 Gift Emporium and I could have filled a suitcase. It's supposedly where "the hipsters of Brooklyn" shop.

High And Low Of Shopping / Alta Y Baja De Las Compras

I LIKE TO shop. My favorite clothing store — lately— has been Desigual. I've picked up several shirts there in recent months; I'm wearing one in my profile picture. I regularly visit the Desigual store in the La Cañada shopping mall in Marbella and I usually leave with something. But when I was there last week, I found a T-shirt I could definitely live without. After not buying the T-shirt, I stopped by an upscale furniture store where I could easily live without everything I saw. But I still came home happy with a couple of little gifts for my 2-year-old pal Luke.

Gatos Y Plátanos / Cats And Bananas

THAT STORM KNOWN as the "beast from the east" has made its presence known here on the Costa del Sol. The sun (sol) can still be seen at times, but it's been mostly gray, windy, and rainy for more than two days, and there's much more to come. I had already been having my share of gray days in my head and San Geraldo finds the dreary weather (and those cyclonic winds) a bit hard to take. To cheer ME up the other day, he baked banana bread. But, it went quickly. So, yes, we have no banana bread.

And because I couldn't find the song "Yes, We Have No Bananas" (from 1923) in both English and Spanish, I decided to share this version by the Swedish Chef, which is in no language, whatsoever.
