THE OLD, OLD, old, old house in San Diego (see yesterday's post) was called a Spanish-style California Craftsman. We were the third owners (the first owners lived there for 68 years). The house was in mint condition. As you saw in yesterday's post, we did major re-landscaping (completely on our own — design and muscle). the only thing we did on the interior was to update the kitchen. We loved, loved, loved, loved the old house with it's coved ceilings, gumwood moldings, and open spaces.
We were going to live there forever. We lasted nearly 2-1/2 years.

Nice space, I don't think I have ever thought of a home, as a forever home. I worked for home builders for 15 years, it is surprising I haven't owned more homes, only 5 in 35 years.
ReplyDeleteTravel:
DeleteActually, I don't think either one of us ever REALLY thought we'd live there forever... just longer than 2-1/2 years.
my friend fearsome beard (who is a real estate agent in san diego) has written about these sears houses on his blog. who knew sears could build something that lasts, unlike their stores?
ReplyDeleteLOVING the original bano!
is there a blog post of yours that lists all the places you have lived? and the length of time you were there?
anne marie:
DeleteThis wasn't a Sears Home (or a kit home). The variety of those is amazing. Seine Judeet has a blog called Sears House Seeker (http://sears-house-seeker.blogspot.com.es) that is fascinating.
anne marie:
DeleteSorry! Forgot to answer your question. Check out this blog post to see where we (and I) have lived: https://mitchellismoving.blogspot.com.es/2013/09/google-home.html
gracias, amigo mitchell!
DeleteYou know I love it! But, it's especially your touch inside and out that makes it so great.
ReplyDeleteSears (and other kit companies) offered one or two of these Spanish style Craftsmen, in different sizes. One of my fellow house researchers blogged about it (one of them is called "The Barcelona" ): The Spanish Craze That Swept the Nation
Judy:
DeleteI loved seeing all those Sears Spanish styles. Before your blog, I had no idea how many different designs (and sizes) Sears had. I wonder how many were in our neighborhoods in San Diego that we didn't know about.
My first house was a vintage bungalow in Sacramento and it had a built-in seat, too.I had never seen that before, until now. Such a cool feature. And the house is gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteBob:
DeleteWe weren't house-hunting the first time we saw the house. Just passing by one Sunday when there was an open house and we thought we'd look. We fell in love. Although I love where life has taken us, I DO miss that house.
Great house. Love the deck and landscaping.
ReplyDeleteFrank:
DeleteIt was a little slice of paradise.
Again...I would never have moved...GORGEOUS! I would have stayed for the telephone niche alone.
ReplyDeletemistress maddie:
DeleteOh, how I loved that phone niche. Was thrilled when I found that 1930s-style phone (push button "dial"). But we never used it. We were afraid we'd break the seat after it had survived all those years. I'm taking a break today from writing about this house. It CAN be depressing!
So gorgeous! Love that telephone niche with the built-in seat!
ReplyDeleteDebra:
DeleteI thought that was the coolest thing when I saw it.
Love the wall of framed photographs. Do you still have them all? Roderick
ReplyDeleteRoderick:
DeleteBefore moving to Spain, we did a major downsize. We scanned all the photos. We now have 35 (I just counted, thank you) hanging and another 30 or so boxed up under a bed. The rest we gave to family or they simply took them for the frames. (We finally had I think over 150.)
Nice. I too like the telephone. And it's got nothing to do with furnishings, but as an old animation fan, I'd love to flip through that book with Mickey Mouse on the cover.
ReplyDeleteKirk:
DeleteThat book was incredible. We gave it to charity before this move.
Our first house in Athens, Georgia had some similar features, although it was only old, old, being built in 1938. Back when a 2x4 was actually 2 inches by 4 inches. Your cove ceilings were so lovely. I can see wanting to stay there forever. Maybe you were giving your house "hugs" in that photo.
ReplyDeleteWilma:
DeleteI think maybe Alice noticed a stain on her top just as the picture was about to be taken. We were giving her moral support. Those cove ceilings. Wish we had those here!
I love the dining room. It's elegant and yet somehow cozy at the same time.
ReplyDeleteDeedes:
DeleteThe dining room got a lot of use. The table had three leaves and comfortably seated 12.
I adore that bathroom. American Deco bathrooms are the very very best x
ReplyDeleteJohn:
DeleteThe house had 2-1/2 baths. I think the half bath may have been added on in the '30s. The master bath (and master bedroom) were added in the '50s. This bathroom was the original. Incredible. Those water lily tiles!
That was a nice color for the den
ReplyDeleteAdam:
DeleteOf course the paint pro would notice that.
Lovely!
ReplyDeleteWalt the Fourth:
DeleteOur house with the most charm. We loved it.
Love the telephone nook - such a warm and comfortable place but that is more what you made it than the simply the space.
ReplyDeleteWilym:
DeleteThanks. We found it easy to make it ours. The space was uplifting the minute we saw it and our furniture fit perfectly.
