What Are You Gonna Do? Shoot Da Swans?

It's been hot. The temperature has hovered in the high 90s, low 100s Fahrenheit (35-40C). And the days have been a bit muggy at times (even some evenings). I had been looking forward to the break in the heat that was forecast for today and tomorrow. It came. It's only about 90F right now (32C), but with the pleasant new air currents came the unpleasant allergies. So, after returning from breakfast around noon today, we've been trying to relax in air-conditioned comfort. We'll get back out to enjoy the evening.

"DESE LOVELIES? MY SWANS GIRLS?"
— BARBRA STREISAND AS FANNY BRICE

In the meantime, we lounge and take turns putting hot cloths on our faces —which helps quite a bit. Anyway, our [saintly] friend Miguel painted some rooms for us during the week and I've been putting things back in place today (while San Geraldo takes his second siesta). Between that and my Spanish studies, I'm having a good time. Can't wait to have it all cleaned and put back together so I can share pictures with you of our now even more colorful lives.

A SWAN IN MY COFFEE? "IT'S ALL OVER FLUFFY VHITE."
THIS MORNING'S ACCIDENTAL ART BY FATIMA.

It's August in Sevilla (well, I think it's August everywhere else, unless the international date line has made it September... but I'm pretty sure it doesn't work that way). August in Sevilla is extremely quiet. Many shops and restaurants shorten their hours or close completely for vacation. By Monday, we'll be the only people remaining in our building. All our neighbors will be at the beach for the rest of the month. The law office downstairs is closed for vacation. I'm thinking of doing some nude sunbathing on the roof. (No, I'm really not, Mom.) On some of our walks, we feel like the city has shut down. Except for the die-hard tourists, a walk in the park is truly a walk in the park right now. So, I took a walk in the park.

" OY... IT'S SOOOOOO HOT!!!"
IF THE DOWAGER DUCHESS WERE HERE, SHE'D BE WEEDING THIS GARDEN.

Maria Luisa Park is adjacent to the Plaza de España. It incorporates gardens, lakes, sculptures, fountains, wildlife, and some of the former pavilions of the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition. Jerry and I pedaled around the park when we were here for vacation/exploration in January 2011. It's too hot for me to enjoy covering it all right now (and too hot to pedal). So, I plan to make several brief visits to the park and the museums. Fortunately, there are a few ice cream vendors conveniently located. It's not gourmet but it will have to do.

SOMETHING FOR THE DOWAGER DUCHESS TO TRANSFORM INTO A WATERCOLOR.

SO MUCH COOLER BY A WATERFALL.

FUENTE DE LOS LEONES (FOUNTAIN OF THE LIONS)
DAMAGED BY VANDALS, THE ORIGINAL LIONS WERE REPLACED WITH COPIES IN 1957.

FUENTE DE LAS RANAS (FOUNTAIN OF THE FROGS).
OMG. THE WATER WAS LIKE SO TOADLY GREEN.

If you're gonna do some nude sun bathing make sure there are no Google drones up in the sky...they are intrusive and will be able to capture your picture nude so accurately even your pubes will be visible.,,lol

But would that get me the 15 minutes of fame I so crave? Anyway, thanks for the warning.

  3. Well, at least there will now be a hiatus from all the parades and festivals. Is there any part of Sevilla that is not beautiful and photogenic?

Belated congratulations to Owl Wood on the richly deserved award for his witty captions, but also his charming and modest acceptance speech!

To be honest, there are definitely parts of Sevilla that are not beautiful. I'll try to capture some of the mundane and dreary to give you a sense. They can still be photogenic, I suppose.

And I've shown a tiny little bit of it. I haven't even explored it all. Lots more to come.

The tile work all over the city is amazing. Tops of buildings. Window sills. Walls.

  6. SO you have vandals over there as well...I thought everyone was civilized across the Big Pond....I'm so ignorant really! I would have jumped in the that waterfall to cool off. We are having uncomfortably humid days now so I understand(somewhat) your desire for AC...Hope the allergies are getting better....try the Boiron site for allergies through homeopathy methods. We do!

Thanks for that site. I'll check it out this evening!

Yes, sadly, there are vandals here too. The vandals that badly damaged the lions did so more than 60 years ago. I assume they're dead by now (or at least really ashamed of themselves). But new ones have taken their place. After Spain recently won the Eurocup, some celebrating idiots knocked the head off a beautiful statue in a large fountain not far from the Cathedral. And the paint "tagging" continues. Really a shame.

    2. This sounds so familiar in regards to a decapitating of a statute here 10 years ago...I just can fathom the amount of ignorance one must muster to think that it's OK!?

    3. Ron:
It makes no sense on any level and it's especially hard to fathom when they were celebrating. "We just won the Eurocup! I'm so effin proud of my country that I think I'll go out and destroy a piece of its history!"

I really shouldn't be complaining about the heat. This is SUPPOSED to be the worst month of summer in Sevilla. What can we expect?

La Alameda de Hercules (a nearby big plaza) has great fountains in the pavement designed for kids to play in. I may head there one day in my shorts and tank top (and without my wallet and cell phone)!

We canoed passed a pair one time (surprised them and us). A bit unsettling when he raised his wings and himself; he towered over us. Fortunately, he calmed down and just let us slip by.

  12. Hello Mitch:
Like you, we have been experiencing exceedingly hot temperature with today set to be 40C!!

Our answer is to have an extended siesta each afternoon - not a Hungarian tradition!

Uff! We're only expecting low 30s today. But 40 here is a normal summer day. Not so where you are. Hope it cools soon. But there's nothing wrong with a siesta. Ask any Southern European!

  13. This has been the worst summer I remember in a long time here in Derbyshire - cool, cloudy and very rainy. The fruit and vegetables in the garden are struggling to grow and ripen, the flowers are disappointing and even in the greenhouse the tomatoes are late in ripening.

I saw on the TV that 60 miles north, in the town where I went to university, they had several inches of hail yesterday.

So I would just love a taste of your heat and sunshine, for a while. I wonder where the happy medium is ??

San Diego, California, was the perfect climate from our perspective -- near the shore. Never too hot. Never too cold. But, I must admit I'll take hot and sunny over cool, cloudy, and rainy any day. So sorry for you!
