A Nice Dash of Paprika

In recent days, I saw the two below fashionistas walking along the Paseo in front of Cafeteria Manila while San Geraldo and I sat trying to enjoy our coffee. I'm glad my breakfast had already settled. I'm also glad they liked their outfits. (I assume they liked their outfits.) To be fair, I thought I'd share some of our own early ensembles. San Geraldo and I — along with our sisters — defined the style of our generation. (When clicked, the photos make an even grander fashion statement.)

"A little bad taste is like a nice dash of paprika."
— Dorothy Parker

1962:  BLACK HIGH-TOP KEDS SNEAKERS! AND, GIVEN THE NAUTICAL LOOK,
THOSE HAD TO BE CLAM-DIGGERS AS OPPOSED TO PEDAL-PUSHERS.
(ANY SIGNIFICANCE TO THE LENGTH AND DANGLE OF THE ROPE? I WON'T TELL.)

1966:  SHORELINE TROLLEY MUSEUM, NEW MILFORD, CONNECTICUT.
(AT 12 AND 14, MY SISTER DALE AND I BEFORE WE WERE COOL.)
I DIDN'T WANT YOU TO MISS OUT ON THE PURSE.
(HERS; MINE IS A CAMERA... I SWEAR).

1973:  SAN GERALDO AND SISTERS, SOUTH DAKOTA.

1966:  AND WHO CAN FORGET THIS TRES CHIC TRIO?
(CLICK HERE IF YOU'VE NEVER SEEN THEM BEFORE.)

Oh the things we've worn in our youth that we thought were cool, only to have them haunt years later.

I thought that flowered shirt was the coolest thing I'd ever owned. As for the clam-digger ensemble, I blame my mother.

  2. Geeeeze, I always feel like I'm looking at my own family photos when I see yours from the 60s and 70s -- fashionistas!

  3. I'm kind of glad my family didn't take many photos - but I honestly can't remember wearing anything like the top 2 photos... the rest, yeah... I sure did. Your family photos could be my own (except for the little bow-legged woman at the bottom... I don't claim her)

The little bow-legged woman, Jerry's grandmother from Norway, was one person you'd definitely want to claim as family. She didn't usually look like that. Someone obviously dressed her up and rolled her out for that wedding. She usually looked very sweet and much more comfortable.

Yeah, I hope those top two guys never see this -- or, if they do, I hope they laugh.

  5. Oh blimey! If I look at these any longer I'm gonna get headache BIG style. The one who gets the anti-prize is the guy in top photo, right.

I agree about that top-right photo. That's a tough one for me to take in. But don't you wish you had my red clam-diggers?

  6. In 1973 plaid was the 'new black'. Nowadays it's a faux pas

I liked it better when brown was the new black!

    2. Next season, SS 2014, brown colors will be the new black and... for both sexes.

  7. I needed that "burst of laughter" so much. I'm wiping the screen clean now. Weren't the trends so fab!? Clam diggers, I had forgotten them ~~ Camera, Yah right?!! San Geraldo 1973 ~~ Gees you and my Jim could be twins...which one is gay?

    LOL snork

San Geraldo's (and Jim's) plaid look had nothing to do with gay. That was (hard to believe) very trendy and cool. Fortunately, I was in more of my hippie stage at that point.

  8. San Geraldo's plaid pants are a wonder to behold. And you and Dale look pretty snazzy, IMHO! As for that last priceless photo, thanks so much for reposting it, I laughed and laughed at the captions all over again!

I have so many more embarrassing photos to share. Glad you enjoy them. Yeah, those plaid pants were something else. And to place them next to that plaid blazer! (Did you notice San Geraldo's "marshmallow" shoes? So cool. I had a pair just like them.)

  9. Oh, Lordy. But who among us doesn't have questionable fashion photos hidden away. We just aren't as brave as you when it comes to sharing them.

I know there are some of my family that are possibly even more entertaining. My mother's got them. I'll have to scan and share. I'm more willing to share bad photos of myself from 30 or 40 years ago than I am from the present!

  11. Well Mitchell, I think it is pretty obvious that you and your sister planned your attires before leaving the house! You 'match' perfectly! OK, my sister and I did the same! There!
San Geraldo with his sisters could have been me....except for the hair, I had a very similar outfit that same year when I met Ron! He must have 'looked' and liked because here we are 40 years later.....

Oh, I hope you don't still have them! (Although the fabric could make a really interesting SPO shirt.)
