So, What... He's Still A Rock Star

I saw the below statue as we quickly drove by a building near the Royal Palace in Madrid Saturday morning. At a glance, I thought he was holding a wireless microphone.

I REALLY LIKE HIS SOCKS.

I don't know who he is but, like the song says (sort of), "So, what... [he's] still a rock star."

  1. It does look like a microphone. I agree, socks are pretty snazzy too, who doesn't want lion head socks?

I really want those socks. But then they'd just sit in a drawer; they wouldn't work without the rest of the ensemble.

  2. I like the way he's posing, so you can't help but notice his socks. With the cape, I bet he was a rock star - before he became a rock.

All I can see on the base is the name "Garcia" and the word "Count." I think he's one of the Grateful Dead; an ancestor of Jerry Garcia.

  3. He's sort of a David Bowie/Jim Morrison/Lady Gaga/Freddie Mercury mash up, though I think this was a post created to give us some Pink and for that I 'Thank You!'

It was funny how I immediately started singing Pink's "So What." But, per my response to Jo above, I think he's more closely related to the Grateful Dead.

  4. I can't help but wonder who this fellow is. By placing him in Roman garb (this was probably erected during the Neo-Classical era) it's hard to identify him.

I wish I could remember what building I saw him on. I haven't been able to find anything online to identify him. Garcia something, Conde (Earl or Count) of something. Not much to go on.

  5. Quite the imposing figure he is! And he does look like he is about to break out in song high up there on his stage!

As we passed he was singing "Bertha, don't you come around here anymore..." I also LOVE Pink.

  6. Okaaaaay... so I watched the video (you're talkin to the old lady who hasn't had a TV for over 40 years)... think I'd'a been ahead just lookin at the statue and his socks. No, No, No, no no... let's go back... WHO is that singer Shi...????..... does she really disrobe/flash her audience...???? Oh hell... I'm gonna go get another shot of wine from the fridge and maybe take the ice pack off my arm... (another story of today's events).... the heck with rock stars... whether made from granite or.... ????

The singer is "Pink" and she's been around with a solo career for probably close to 15 years. (When she started, her hair was hot pink.) And I think she only "flashed" for the video...and I have a feeling she was wearing something... Looking forward to reading what you did to you arm. I've heard (well... I've learned) that soaking your head in wine is really good for arm injuries.

  7. Clever.

I do rather like Pink. She certainly likes Australia.

I didn't know there was a strong connection with Pink and Australia. I like her, too.

Somehow I don't think the cape and socks would go with your Viking helmet.

  9. I'm disappointed he hasn't any sock garters. Whatever was he thinking???

Not really paid much attention to Pink before, I think I'm going to have to amend that.

In the photo you can't even tell if they're really socks. Maybe he had the actual heads implanted in his shins.

I do like Pink. Amazing talent.

  11. The fellow is King Rechiar Suebic of Galicia, reign from 448 to 456, the statue was sculpted around 1750. He is dressed as a Roman General which was the baroque style of 1750. He is not wearing socks but Roman Leather boots worn by generals in antiquity.
    Hope this helps.

Thank you so much for the info. I'm going to look him up. And the boots (and not socks) explain why there are no visible garters!

    2. If you look at paintings of Roman generals from the Renaissance period you will see this type of stiff leather boot. Some open toed, some showing the heel. The idea was more display, usually in the colour red because it indicated a commander (imperator) Julius Caesar wore red boots like these the day he was stabbed. They are laced in front and decorated with metal design.
