Mama's Home Cooking

I arrived in Brooklyn Tuesday night and have been welcomed back into Mama's (aka The Dowager Duchess') warm embrace.

So many people comment, "Oh, I bet your mother loves cooking for you when you come home."

Although unlike her eldest son, The Dowager Duchess did at one time cook -- and cook well -- that ship sailed a long time ago. Now, the Duchess goes out for meals with friends or throws something simple together at home (leftovers from her meals out are her specialty).

The Dowager Duchess in fact "cooked" dinner for us Wednesday night  -- hardboiled eggs and salad. That's a lot more cooking than I ever do, but still. My mother also used to be an incredible baker. She baked every week. Tins and cookie jars were always stocked. That ship has sailed, too.

But I'm not complaining. The Dowager Duchess still shops. See below to experience my suffering.

THE DUCHESS: "THE CANDY CORN JUST LOOKED GOOD."
"DIDN'T YOU USED TO LOVE CHOCOLATE COVERED CHERRIES?"
(I DID.  THEN I DIDN'T.  BUT NOW... I DO AGAIN.)
"I LIKED THE SIZE OF THE BOX."
(THE DUCHESS DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT "DOUBLE STUF.")
"OOH, THESE ARE DELICIOUS WITH THE EXTRA FILLING."
BUT WAIT! THERE'S MORE!!!
APPARENTLY, I HAVE TO FINISH OFF THE STASH BEFORE I GO HOME.

  1. Boiled eggs - Mmmmmm!
Do you have such things as pickled boiled eggs in USA or Spain? They are a staple little snack found on the counters of many English pubs, as your Derbyshire friend would confirm. Maybe they're international.

I'm sure Americans eat pickled boiled eggs. I just never have. I see them in Spain, but I think that's only because we're currently living among a lot of Brits. I'll ask Tynan what he thinks of them.

  2. Every time I visit my mother in her retirement home she asks me if I want a beer. I say the same thing. "Mom, I'm 62 years old. When have you ever seen me drink a beer?"
She tells me that people do change their minds. Interestingly, there's no beer in her fridge.

Mothers can be interesting, can't they? Mine insisted the other day that she's never been a back-seat driver. Fortunately, my cousin was with us and nearly spit out her coffee.

  7. Oh my. At least you aren't missing out on your favourite food group - chocolate! Before my Dad died, he would ask me to cook when I would visit; considering what he 'cooked' I was happy to oblige.

  11. My mother dislikes cooking now too, when she wants home cooking she comes to my house lol. She tells her friends she only drinks liquor when she comes to my house. I think I am a bad influence. Your mother appears to be feeding your chocolate addiction...that or she has one as well?

When my mother wants home cooking, she goes to a restaurant. My mother's addiction is ice cream. She wanted ice cream last night. I was Skyping with San Geraldo. She gave up waiting and had it herself.

  13. Glad you had a safe trip to NY.

I love Double Stuf Oreos! I dip them in milk - which I consider "cooking". I haven't had Milanos for quite some time, but seeing the packages makes me want to get some.

I was shopping with my mother today and came across "MEGA STUFF" Oreos. My mother thought that would be too much, but I'm not so sure.

  15. Although the Dowager Duchess may not cook any more, from your story she has retained the sense of occasion, hospitality, generosity, and curiosity (Double Stuff Oreos). The "Didn't you used to love..." was very familiar to me and brought fond memories. Please tell the Duchess that she has earned quadruple Happy Points for that!
