Don't Dawdle, Amaryllis

MEDICAL-GRADE RAFFIA?
Next Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 is my "herniorrafia," which I wish translated from Spanish to English to mean: "Decorate hernia with raffia."

We bought a new Smart TV for the bedroom today and it was delivered and installed within an hour. The store, Araujo Electrodomesticos, is a few minutes away. We love to support local small business and this store earns our loyalty with every purchase. Recovery here I come.

In other news, less than a year ago I shared photos (click here) of the naturalised (in two cement planters) amaryllis growing next to the chiringuito (beach restaurant) across the street. I've read so many different instructions on "overwintering" amaryllis. It never sounds easy.

We send My Mother The Dowager Duchess an amaryllis every year for Christmas/Chanukah. With her green thumb, she can bring them back after the first year... but not always. The owners of the restaurant across the street don't appear to do much of anything. I suppose amaryllis just likes it here and I suppose I understand why. (Click any image to beautify.)

LAST WEEK...

THE OTHER PLANTER: FIXIN' TA BLOOM, AS THEY SAY IN TEXAS.
TODAY: 'IT DONE BLOOMED' (BUT THERE'S LOTS MORE FIXIN' TA).

Which brought to mind the following song (all because of the line at 0:11–0:12)...

After you listen to the song, I'd just like to say that there IS a man alive that DOES measure up to (and surpass) that blend of Paul Bunyan, Saint Pat, and Noah Webster I concocted for myself. His name is San Geraldo.

  1. "Fixin' to do (something, anything) is one of my favorite southernisms. It comes in so handy. Hope your hernia decorating (that you're fixin' to do) is a piece of cake., chocolate cake.

The video was not available for me. :-(

I had never heard the expression until I moved to San Diego and had a friend from Texas. He looked at some cacti in the dessert and said, "Hooey, they're fixin' ta bloom." He then added, "I might [maht] could grow 'em in my yard." And I thought we talked funny in New York! Sorry about the video. If you're not familiar with the song, and are curious, do a search of "Piano Lesson The Music Man" on Youtube.

Fortunately, most days I can still find the positives... even the hernia! I'm scanning the raffia choices to find a decidedly "butch" color combination.

  3. Your 'connections' always amaze me, Mitchell. Ron does very similar things with shapes, sounds, designs etc.
Yes, good luck with the operation....have you picked the coulour yet?!
Amaryllis is such an exotic plant.....no wonder it loves it there!

I do love connections. My brain can sometimes go on stream-of-consciousness auto-pilot. Ron and I could probably entertain ourselves and each other for hours (if not days). I just mentioned in my reply to Judy, I'm trying to select a decidedly butch raffia color combination.

And that's with no color enhancement on my part. We try to buy my mother the largest flowers and most vivid reds we can find. They're spectacular.

My mother's are usually beautiful, but they're forced for Christmas. Otherwise, no chance in New York either. I can't believe how these grow across the street.

  8. Darling dear, stick with the grey, green and blue... I'm sure those colours will suit you well.
I'm fixin' to send you a buttload of hugs, just to tide you over.
About the photos - sorry, not sorry, lol. ;-) When I figure out how to get things over there before they can go stale, I'll send you some

Those were the exact colors I was leaning towards... and possibly the off-white as an accent. As for stale, you can just bake them here when you take your apartment next door for a month.
