Up On The Roof

I have a 28-year-old second-cousin-once-removed named Robin who has been spending the year studying and working on the Spanish island of Ibiza. We had only met once before about seven years ago at the wedding of another second-cousin-once-removed. At that same time, I also met her mother, Lauren, as well as her two sisters. Until then, we didn't even know of each others' existence. Lauren is in Spain to visit Robin and they flew to Málaga just to get together with us.

I met them Monday at their hotel, Hotel AC Málaga Palacio, and we spent the day seeing some historic sites and enjoying each other's company (well, at least I enjoyed theirs; I hope they enjoyed mine).

San Geraldo had Spanish class, so Lauren and Robin came home with me in the evening and the four of us went to dinner. The day started with a trip to the 15th-floor rooftop of their hotel for amazing views of the city. (Click here for our first visit to Málaga in 2011 including views from our balcony at the same hotel.)

(Click any image for an even better view.)

THE CATHEDRAL, KNOWN AS "LA MANQUITA" (ONE-ARMED LADY),
DUE TO THE NEVER-COMPLETED SECOND TOWER, FOREGROUND.
THE PORT,
A CRUISE SHIP SETTING OFF FOR OTHER MEDITERRANEAN DESTINATIONS.
WHERE WE WOULD END UP LATER IN THE DAY.  (ON FOOT!)
THE ALCAZABA HALF-WAY UP THE HILL; THE CASTILLO AT TOP.
THE BISHOPS PALACE, STILL ADORNED WITH SEMANA SANTA BUNTING.

Still to come this week:
— A visit to Málaga's Alcazaba (11th-century palatial fortification) and Castillo de Gibralfaro (10th-century castle).
—  Views of our current weather (San Geraldo's been complaining again).

Right smack dab in the middle of town...

  2. How lovely that you could spend time with them, I have cousins who I have never met, I would like to someday but they live in Canada. The views look incredible!

A very special day. Just wait until you see the views from the other two spots! Our city is mostly flat. It makes it wonderfully accessible and easy to do whatever you need, but getting a lofty view sometimes is uplifting.

  3. Don't you love it when 'company' comes and you get to see your town/city in more detail. I always learn something that I didn't know.
These views are wonderful. I was just saying today that our 'cruise ship' season will be starting soon as well....in May. Geez, I hope the snow is all gone....what a surprise that would be.
Looking forward to your next posts in particular the 'cyclonic' one!!

  4. Wowzer, what views!
I just met a first-cousin-once-removed who has recently moved from New England to here in St. Louis :) We had him over for early Easter dinner :) It's nice to have relatives around.

It's nice to discover relatives you didn't know about and then LIKE them. THEN, it's nice to have relatives around. I'm grateful for that and am happy for you, too!

  5. Very nice views, Mitchell. That yellow and red building is the Bishop's Palace and not a fancy MacDonalds? Good thing I'm not there. I might embarrass myself by running in and shouting for a McFlurry.

That Bishop's palace had a fresh coat of paint this year. It was much more subtle last year (because the colors had faded, I think). As for McFlurries, I assume McDonald's offers those here, as well, but I won't be checking that out for you. Besides, when you're here you should instead get some fresh-made ice cream and churros and chocolate!

  6. The Bishop's Palace is certainly colourful! How could your cousins not adore you, I mean, c'mon, WE all do; they'd be silly not to!
One of my fave songs; oddly enough, my bluegrass lovin' Dad was a huge James Taylor fan; thanks for the smile this morning.

The reddish and yellowish are the standard Spanish colors for official buildings. The palace had a fresh coat of paint this year and is, therefore, unusually saturated with color. You're very kind. I'm sure there's at least one (OK, maybe more) people who don't adore me... and some with good reason. But I won't concern myself with them!

  9. Glorious views from up there... an apartment with that view would be a tiny bit special wouldn't it?!

That would be incredible. Then again, I love our less elevated view right on the beach and hearing the surf. Maybe a city apartment... Just day-dreaming.

  10. Up On the Roof is one of my all-time favorite songs, and I recently had the opportunity to hear James and Carol sing it when they came to Portland. Great pictures as always; you make me itch to visit Spain again.

The song is one of my favourites, too. When we moved to Brooklyn, my sister and I used to go up on the roof of our building (25 stories up). That song always played in my head. Since then, they've locked the doors to the roof!

What an incredible experience that must have been to have the privilege of seeing James Taylor and Carol King perform together.

  11. Your cousins are lucky to have you to show them around. Tourists generally most likely miss most of this. I know I did.

Thanks to my cousins, I finally got to see these historic sites. As for them being lucky, they are also extremely kind. There were hardly any signs directing us correctly and they walked back and forth and up and down with me without even a single eye-roll. They made the day an absolute pleasure.

  13. What on earth does a bishop do/need with a palace I wonder?
