Do You Want Some Moor-ish?

My Mother The Dowager Duchess is on a first-name basis with all the famous chefs of the world.

The Frugal Gourmet (Jeff Snodsmith), she called Frugal — until the jerk was arrested for being a pedophile. Then she stopped calling him at all.

Graham Kerr, The Galloping Gourmet, was Galloping.

Julia Child was, of course, Julia.

Giada De Laurentis? Giada.

Emeril Lagasse? Emeril. (But then, everyone calls him Emeril.)

Oddly, Rachael Ray is Rachael Ray. And the host of "Yan Can Cook," Martin Yan, was always Yan-Can-Cook.

The Dowager Duchess does, however, remain on a first-name basis with the best chef of our own little world, San Geraldo. She calls him Jerry. I call him "the best thing that ever happened to me" and not just because he bakes Moorish Chicken and Nut Pie.

His recipe is from "The New Spanish Table" (click here if you actually read recipes).

Although San Geraldo and I have always been on a first-name basis, he has a special fondness for endearments. I will only share one with you here. He often calls me "honey." When I wasn't feeling well and he was heading to the supermarket, I heard him call out, "Do you need any, honey?"

Any what, I wondered.

"Do I need any what?" I called back.

He laughed and said, "No. Do you need honey? For your tea."

I had over-punctuated.


Just so you know, the main lyrics of the below song are,
"Get my honey come back, sometimes."
So, this makes perfect sense.

  1. M-M-M GOOD! Looks VERY edible! That would disappear so quickly here it wouldn't be funny! Actually, it would.
    My fav of all the chefs was 'Julia'. I could listen and watch her cook/bake all day!
    This has inspired me to get out a similar one in our freezer which doesn't look anything like Jerry's ("the best thing that ever happened to me") but will do on this cold winter's day.

      The pie is exceptional. The chef says it's easy. I doubt it I(although you might find the recipe easy, too).

      Sorry about the copyrights on the recipe and video. I changed the video and hope it will be visible to more people. San Geraldo calls me a lot of "sweet" things. Early on I decided to enjoy and appreciate them all (instead of gagging on the sweetness).

  8. That looks delicious! I don't know if I would be able to tackle that recipe, but I still make the cranberry orange bread that you once posted. My cooking/baking is closer to yours than San Geraldo's. And I'd take him over Galloping any day. :)

      Ooh, I love that bread! As for this recipe, Jerry insists it's easy. But then he tends to say many recipes are "easy as pie." And we all know how easy "pie" is for someone like me!

  9. I'm kinda with DD on this ... I call Rachel Ray .... Rachel Ray, at least when I'm not calling her How Does This Obnoxious Woman Have a Show!

    And that pie??? I'm gonna try that one, it looks wonderful!

      That's what my niece and nephew call Rachael Ray. (The Dowager Duchess usually adds a qualifier to Rachael Ray -- "She spells Rachel with an "a" R-A-C-H-A-E-L."). Jerry made the pie before we moved here (after having bought that cookbook). It was perfect that time, too. The recipes are great... and so is he.

  10. Yan can cook - loved that show! He was from Vancouver here in British Columbia. I still find his cookbooks all the time at garage sales. That pie looks amazing - you are so lucky that man can cook or you would waste away!

      I have never seen a cooking show I loved but I did enjoy Yan Can Cook. And, yes, I'm very luck Jerry can cook. You should have seen how I ate before I met him... and when he travelled on business.

      You obviously aren't familiar with Jerry's "salads." Ham or turkey, cheese, celery, almonds, mango, papaya, grapes, oranges, melon... In the case of the pie, the mandarin slices were dessert.

  16. That looks delicious!!! I am so glad that our "best thing that ever happened to me"s are such good cooks! One of my goals for the year is to learn how to make dishes that aren't spaghetti-based!
