You've Got A Spot To Fill

You might remember that we had a glass curtain installed to enclose our entire terrace. As a result, winter has been transformed. No more cyclonic winds. And no more decimated plants. San Geraldo planted a collection of Amaryllis bulbs in a long pot outside the living room doors so that we could enjoy the blooms while inside or out on the terrace. They've been blooming since the third week in November and show no sign of stopping. We've read all the special instructions for caring for amaryllis bulbs between blooms, but won't take the trouble. The chiringuito (beach bar) across the street, has three large stone planters filled with Amaryllis that bloom dramatically every spring and are left to the ravages of the weather the rest of the year. They're thriving. Maybe ours will, too.

It's so nice to see everything thriving through the winter. Jerry is doing a great job. And it's wonderful to walk into the house and see the amaryllis across the way.

  3. WOW! They are gorgeous!
I've seen and heard that some plants can handle some roughness....it sets off their survival genes and they do everything needed to live.
So, you may have to do the same to these beauties if they get too settled in this beautiful terrace setting.

Like bougainvillea! The less attention it gets, the better it seems to do. You're right about the amaryllis. They may be too protected on our terrace. The ones across the street are battered and wind-blown and cold and ignored all winter.

Jerry wanted color all the time on the terrace. So we've got these blooming for months, hibiscus that seems to bloom year-round, bougainvillea... it's uplifting.

The glass curtain has transformed the entire apartment. And the panels all fold back during nice weather to give us a completely open terrace when we want. The perfect solution.

My mother had a yucca in her apartment for nearly 50 years. It would hit the ceiling, she would cut it back, and root it, and the cycle would continue. She ended up with several yuccas and rooted cuttings for friends. She was once in a plant shop and saw a very sad-looking yucca. My mother mentioned her yucca and how much she loved it. The clerk asked where she kept it and when she said southern exposure in front of a picture window, full-sun, and near a radiator/air-conditioner, the clerk told her that was not a good place for a yucca. Meanwhile it thrived and the shop's yucca was near dead!

Everything is thriving on the terrace. We have two big planters filled with the tallest crowns of thorns we've ever had. More photos to come. I love Audra, too.

It's so hard right now. We're relieved to be here and not there, but it doesn't make things any better around the world. It's frightening and still impossible to keep our minds from constantly returning to thoughts of it. Feel free to come back and look at the flowers any time!
