The Dawn Of Another Day / La Amanecer De Otro Día

I WAS LYING in bed early Tuesday morning thinking about the fact that I had a cold, and that every time I coughed (or blew my nose) the jolting pain of my self-diagnosed sciatica was back. San Geraldo, who's been coughing and miserable since Saturday, had been awake for a while. He said quietly, not realizing I was already awake, "I'm sorry to wake you, but it's worth getting up for this sunrise." It was a much better topic for starting the day.

Cool Cats / Los Gatos Cool

IT'S BEEN COLD (for here). OK, maybe not today, which is 16C (61F) and still climbing. But it HAS been cold. We've even had overnight temperatures barely above freezing. So, when Dudo isn't watching the drain hoping one of the crag martins will visit, he's looking for someplace warm to lounge. If the sun is shining, the terrace is like a greenhouse and he'll spend the entire day out there. If the sun isn't shining, he wants my lap or one of the space heaters. I have no heat in my office so on really cold days, I plug in the space heater. If Dudo sat any closer, he'd be inside it.

Oh, yeah, those allergies San Geraldo has been suffering from? I caught them. I guess it's a cold. Now who's going to cook? I cooked. In my fashion. I picked up take-out (takeaway). Three times.

A mi manera. Comidas para llevar. Tres veces.

AND THEN THERE'S MOOSE.
ADEMÁS ESTÁ MOOSE.

What's That Smell?

WE'RE GRATEFUL WE had such a good time celebrating San Geraldo's birthday early with Pedro and Kathleen (yesterday's post) because he spent most of the weekend in bed with a cold or bad allergies (likely allergies).

Two-year-old Luke painted two pictures (with Kathleen) for San Geraldo. Kathleen wrote two poems to go with them. One poem is about San Geraldo's gaseous gift (i.e., farting). He likes to share. He likes to talk about it — during dinner. So does Kathleen. I don't. If I ever did fart, of course I'd talk about it (although not during a meal). But I never have. (That's my story and I'm sticking to it!)

I found a photo from the 1980s of a day at the beach in Scituate, Massachusetts. It was greenfly (greenhead horsefly) season. Huge, aggressive flies with painful bites. We were never without our insect repellant. I'm pretty sure that's what I'm using on San Geraldo in the photo. On second glance, maybe it was air freshener — for the rest of us.

Anyway, no matter what kind of protection San Geraldo needs, I will always provide it.

Breaking Down 69 / Descomponer 69

I WASN'T GOING to tell you how old San Geraldo is today, but the sparklers will give it away. (He's either 6 or 9 and based on his behavior, I'd say 6.) Anway, that's our friend Pedro with the birthday cake. We celebrated Friday night at Kathleen and Pedro's house.

Friday morning I asked San Geraldo if he wanted ME to bake him a cake. Without hesitation, he snapped, "No!" I pretended to be insulted (he knew I was relieved). But I bought something delicious and I found sparklers instead of candles. It took so long for Pedro and me to get a sparkler lit that we had to present them one at a time. We all sang in English with the 6 and then in Spanish with the 9. (Maybe San Geraldo is just too old to do the 6 and the 9 all at once anyway.)

And I Say, "Doctor!" / Y Digo, "¡Doctor!"

WE HAD OUR first appointments early Wednesday with our new doctor (click here for why). We liked him. Well, San Geraldo "sorta" liked him. Lab results were fine for us both. I need to go back in for more scans of my hips (the one I had the first time wasn't what was needed!).

Two doctors told San Geraldo a couple of years ago that he needs to walk for pleasure ("an oxymoron," says San Geraldo) a half hour a day. He has not. Our new doctor told him he needs to walk an hour a day. "That's what you get," says I. He also recommended (for us both) cutting down on saturated fats, simple sugars, yada yada yada.

It's been two entire days and San Geraldo has been very well behaved — except for the one-hour walks. Well, maybe there was a hiccup or two. We were in Marbella at a shopping mall Wednesday afternoon. San Geraldo stopped for a cup of coffee. I wanted nothing but water because my Invisalign braces were in my mouth and I'd have to remove them to eat or drink anything. The barista liked San Geraldo (of course) and gave him a free ice cream. He gave it to me. I gave it back. The braces. He was so disappointed to have to eat it himself. Such sacrifice!

Then our neighbors who are here a few months of the year brought us a box of chocolates. A really good box of chocolates. If it weren't for my braces, the entire box would be gone.

Like A Bull / Como Un Toro

THE OTHER DAY, I shared photos of my walk on the beach (click here). Visible in a few photos was a big black bull on a hill. Some facts about the bull:
• The bull is a billboard, one of 21 in Andalusia. (There are 94 in all of Spain.)
• They were erected beginning in 1956 by the Osborne Sherry Company (now Osborne Group) to advertise their Brandy of Jerez. The company was established in 1772.
• They were made larger in 1962 when new laws banned advertising within 150 metres (about 500 feet) of a road.
• In 1994, the EU passed a law prohibiting roadside advertising for alcoholic beverages. Public response enabled the bulls to remain but completely blacked out (no more advertising).

I went for a walk Wednesday (7 February) to get some new views of the bull to share with you.

Here's the link to last year's blog post when I walked to the top of the hill for a closer look, coincidentally on the 7th of Feburary, the exact same day (click here). I remember wearing a T-shirt and shorts that day. This year, a sweatshirt, scarf, down vest, gloves, and knit cap! This weather is bull!

Do You Want Mussels Or Muscles?

MANY NON-NATIVE ENGLISH speakers don't realize that mussels and muscles are pronounced exactly the same in English.

We have a cousin in Norway who once commented on my "big muss-kuls" (she was hallucinating). When I corrected her pronunciation, she couldn't understand why mussels and muscles were spelled differently if they were pronounced identically. The same thing has come up with some of my Spanish friends. Try explaining English!

I don't know exactly how mussels are farmed and harvested here and am hoping someone reading my blog will be able to explain it. What I do know is that mussels (not muscles) have been around for a very long time. One of the earliest known seafood dinners was discovered and it included mussels, 164,000 years ago. Come to think of it, muscles would have existed at that time, too.

And, speaking of mussels (and muscles), look what the wind blow in.

Phantom Of The Rainbow / La Fantasma Del Arcoiris

I GOT CAUGHT in the rain during my walk on the beach today. I could see the dark clouds over the mountains start to circle toward the coast, but I couldn't convince myself to rush. I was too content. Later in the day, a rainbow.

I phoned the Kid Brother for his birthday. Per his Sunday instructions, I phoned "earlier." Our Sunday FaceTime call is at 11 in the morning his time. I called at 9:40 so San Geraldo and I could both sing to him. His roommate said, "He stepped out." So, I phoned again at 10. No answer. 10:20. No answer. 10:45. No answer. 11:15. "You're kinda late," he said. But I sang to him anyway. Like I said yesterday, "Oh, brother!"

Oh, Brother! / ¡Oh, Hermano!

TOMORROW IS THE Kid Brother's birthday. We've been back in business on FaceTime these past few weeks. Still no email, but I'm going to let that go for now. Having minimal reading and writing skills, he really has no use for it anyway. Today on FaceTime, I promised I would call him to wish him a happy birthday. I'll sing. He'll laugh. We'll both be happy. Life with The Kid Brother has never been easy, but it's gotten so much better now. And no matter how difficult it's ever been, I've always adored him — although it took me years to realize my feelings for him were not simply a result of responsibility. Besides, he's always found me entertaining.

HGTV Is Looking For Us / HGTV Nos Busca

OUR FRIEND KATHLEEN texted a photo to me Friday morning. It was a local newspaper article announcing that HGTV is "looking for [native English-speaking] energetic couples and families who are searching for a new home on the Costa del Sol." It's for a new show called "Mediterranean Life." A representative from HGTV actually emailed me, out of the blue, a few years ago to set up a phone call. I sent her a return email with scheduling options and then never heard from her again. Do I dare contact them? Should we consider moving again, so we're of more interest? Would I even want to be a part of it? Would San Geraldo? Could I handle the fame?

I'll have to discuss it with "my people."

Has anyone seen "my people"?
