Sombrilla Style / Estilo Sombrilla

I TOOK SOME photos on my walk today of the varieties of sombrillas (parasols) along one 3.5 km (2.1-mile) stretch of our beach. See yesterday's post for another elegant look.

Parasol Ponytails / Coletas De Sombrillas

THEY'RE NOT ONLY rolling up the boardwalks on our beaches, the beach club owners are thinning out the ranks of their lounge chairs and sombrillas (parasols). Eventually, most of these will be gone for a few months before it all starts up again.

I DIDN'T REALIZE THOSE FANCY PONY TAILS WERE REMOVABLE (OR THEY'D BE SQUASHED IN STORAGE).
NO ME DI CUENTA DE QUE ESAS EXTRAVAGANTES COLETAS ERAN EXTRAÍBLES (O SERíAN APLASTADOS EN EL ALMACENAMIENTO).

Soothing Sounds / Sonidos Relajantes

I OPENED THE windows at around 4 this morning so I could sleep to the calming sounds of the Mediterranean surf. At 8 I awoke to a roar. I saw a very gentle sea and a maintenance worker with a gas-powered leaf blower. The team was out in force. Smurfs.

A bit later, along came a truck to haul away some of the summer boardwalk. Ah, the gentle sounds of the sea.

Brother, Brother / Hermano, Hermano

THE KID BROTHER hasn't been very cooperative lately. I don't think he's shown up for a single FaceTime chat since our visit in July. When I eventually reach him by phone — sometimes later in the day, sometimes later in the week — he's always happy to hear from me and very pleasant, so I'm clearly not on his shit list. In the past, he would initiate the FaceTime call. Since he keeps his iPad turned off and in its original box when not in use, I can't just randomly call him on FaceTime. So, I've suggested we try a planned call, that I initiate, next Saturday. He agreed to have his iPad ready to go at that time. We'll see.

Dudo and Moose, those other brothers, communicate much more readily... although sometimes with no more success.

OUR FRIEND PEDRO baked Pastela Moruna last night, a traditional dish from his home in Córdoba, using a recipe from San Geraldo's cookbook "The New Spanish Table," in which it's called Moorish Chicken and Nut Pie. Topped with a dusting of powdered sugar, it was exquisite.

Kathleen (remember yesterday's sweet post) baked her own creation of Nocilla (a hazelnut and chocolate spread similar to Nutella) and raspberries in a braided puff pastry. (Did you hear us all moan?)

My pal Luke was adorable as always. We are so lucky to have this much sweetness in our lives.

OUR FRIEND KATHLEEN decided to try her hand making Rice Krispies Treats. For those of you unfamiliar with these American culinary wonders, the standard recipe includes butter, plain marshmallows, and Rice Krispies breakfast cereal.

Kathleen went to the supermarket and found butter, of course. But she didn't find plain white marshmallows. Nor did she find Rice Krispies cereal.

So, Kathleen made do. She used "trigo inflado con miel" (puffed wheat with honey), pink marshmallows, and "chocolate de caramelo" (which is like American caramels).

I call what Kathleen made "Trigoinfladoconmiel Treats." The name may not be quite so catchy, but these suckers beat Rice Krispies Treats by a mile.

TRIGOINFLADOCONMIEL TREATS DE KATHLEEN,

NUESTRA AMIGA KATHLEEN decidió hacer "Rice Krispie Treats."

What I Will Never Be / Lo Que Nunca Seré

I HAVE DECIDED to never pursue a career in knife sharpening. Just washing dishes puts me in enough danger.

I stabbed the tip of my finger with a fork last night. I had a moment of panic when I saw a lot of blood. 'What did I hit?' I wondered.

By the time I cleaned and wrapped my finger in two small Band-Aids, the bleeding had already stopped. But when I returned to the kitchen, there were drops of blood everywhere. So, that wasn't my imagination.

The first time I saw a knife sharpener plying his trade on the streets was when we moved to Sevilla in 2011. Local tradesmen make the rounds of the old neighborhoods with their equipment attached to bicycles and motos. They make their presence known with the use of a repetitive tune played on a pan flute. Here in Fuengirola, they carry their tools in cars and vans, as well. Next time one is in the neighborhood, I'll probably take our knives down.

Our forks are already sharp enough.

How Bad Can A Cyclone Be?

THE CONEY ISLAND Cyclone wooden roller coaster (a New York City landmark on the National Register of Historic Places) has been in use since 26 June 1927, one day after My Mother the Dowager Duchess was born. She never rode. Neither did I. My sister Dale and our father rode it together in the 1960s. Dale was brave. My father was brave for his daughter.

Every year, I ask The Kid Brother if he'll go on it with me. Every year he says, "What are you, nuts?!?" I guess I'll be in trouble if he ever changes his response.

Our English friends Nick, Alison, and their son Ed rode the cyclone this year on their visit to New York.

As Alison said (I'm paraphrasing), "Oh, Ed, look at the old thing. How bad can it be?"

NEITHER THE CYCLONE NOR ROME WERE BUILT IN A DAY. THE SIGN SHOULD READ "OPENED ON JUNE 26, 1927."
NI EL CYCLONE NI ROMA FUERON CONSTRUIDOS EN UN DÍA. EL SIGNO DEBERÍA DECIR: "INAUGURADO EL 26 DE JUNIIO 1927".
