Mid-Evening In The Garden Of Good And Evil

I took another long walk today and came across Fuengirola's Garden of Eden (Jardín del Edén) — in sand. Eve (Eva) apparently wasn't much to look at. (Click any image to enter the Garden.)

BEHIND ADAM: A PRAYING CHERUB AND SATAN.
AND, OF COURSE, A ROMAN TEMPLE IN WATER.
BEHIND EVA: CUPID/EROS.
TOO BAD THEY ALREADY ATE THE APPLE.
THE SCULPTOR CLEARLY HAD MORE INTEREST IN ADAM THAN IN EVA.

As I headed back home, I passed a bar blasting Abba's "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)." I haven't been able to get the song out of my head. At first I saw no reason to include the music video with this post. Then I took another look at Adam...

And I thought maybe that's exactly what the sculptor had in mind.

  1. Hey Mitchell, you have a few more minutes before midnight, I think!! Hope SG is awake!!
    And....'behind Eve', right! lol
What great work once again by the sand-sculptors! Even put in the veins!! Detail is great. And I think your theory is correct about poor Eve's image.
Even though I couldn't connect with Abba (out of country law) I am singing away and counting down to midnight.

I posted exactly two minutes before midnight. Whew! That's all I'm saying. Sorry about ABBA. I never know what will play and what won't.

  2. Eve looks like she's been eating more than apples.

This sand sculptor does some really fun set-ups but he doesn't have the same mastery as Paul Blane. So his sculptures tend to be obviously bottom heavy. Torso figures have massive chests. Sitting figures have huge lower backs and butts. Paul is much more subtle when designing the support structure. So, in short... yep, Eve does look like she's been eating more than apples.

I guess he didn't feel comfortable setting Eve in the same pose as Adam.

Interestingly, when we arrived in town last year, the sculptor was built a bit like Adam. He's put on a bit of weight since then.

  6. I think they may have eaten a few magic mushrooms along with the apple, if their eyes are anything to go by, lol.

Unlike some of the sculptors along the beach, this guy appears to be a sober, healthy kind of guy. But his faces do tend to have that stoned look. Last summer, a group of back-packers stopped here for a week and sculpted whiel they stayed. Every one of their faces looked high (oh, and their sculptures did, too).

  7. I've never seen a fig leaf 'stand at attention' quite as much as this one does, but then I'm rarely out past midnight.

I had the same reaction. From a distance, I thought it was something else -- which clearly was his intention. (No one said you had to be "out.")

Every time I hear one of their songs, the entire repertoire goes through my head for days. Be prepared.

  9. I don't want to carp at what are, by any measure, amazing creations, but wouldn't it be fun if someone did an 'Adam and Steve'? (Though I dare say it would be a certain target for vandals/religious fundies.)

Btw: That was quite a shrewd link between your subject matter and the song. I wonder if everyone got it.
    (ABBA forever!!!)

I'll bet if I checked out the san sculptures in Torremolinos, I might find an Adam & Steve.

  10. Those teeth! Scary enough to remove my attention from Adam and Eve.

But they're very white. He must brush regularly.

  11. I used to love listening to ABBA when I was out walking around the neighborhood, but I had (chose?) to fight the temptation to dance on the sidewalk. And it is hard to get the songs out of my head. Damn Ohrwurms!

And Mama Mia, here I go again. But ohrwurms do sound so much better than earworms.

  12. It appears Eva is melting ... did someone toss a bucket of water on her?

I walked by again today. Eva's rolls have smoothed out and Adam has lost all his definition.

  13. How apt: I remember the name Adam is a pun or derivative of the hebrew word adama which means earth. Adam is made from the earth - or in this case - sand!

Tempting. I walked by today and noticed the fig leaf has grown!
