And The Band Played On / Y La Banda Siguió Tocando

ONE DAY LAST week, in a low moment, San Geraldo told me he couldn't survive without me. I promised him I would do everything in my power to outlive him.

Then I had a dream that San Geraldo was in a serious relationship with someone he dated briefly 40 years ago (we became friends for a while). Neither of us have had any contact with him in more than 20 years.

In my dream, the relationship had been going on our entire time together (nearly 36 years). I confronted San Geraldo and he admitted he was leaving me. I said, "You son-of-a-bitch! You just made me promise to outlive you!"

The dream was so upsetting, it took me several days to even tell him about it. He assured me it wasn't true. But he didn't really help matters by saying, "You think I'd leave you for HIM?!?"

I thought, "Why? Do you have someone better in mind?"

But I got over it and today is my birthday. For both our sakes, I have survived another one. (And he's still with me.) Besides, I've noticed that bands seem to follow me wherever I go.

¡Me has hecho prometer sobrevivirte!"

¿Tienes pensando a alguien mejor?"

Por ambos, he sobrevivido a otro.

  1. Rest assured, Mitch, the 'bands' will continue to follow you in celebration of the great human being you are! Happy Birthday to you.
I think your relationship with SG is pretty safe.

A band went by on a bus yesterday while I was having my coffee and tomorrow many cities are decorating the streets with flower petals and having marching bands; I think it's for me. And, yeah, I'm pretty sure my relationship is safe... Keep a good thought.

  3. Feliz cumpleanos!
Carlos and I have had that same discussion about being left alone and we have decided that we should go together ... o natural causes. I don't know how that's gonna work out.
On the dream note, aren't dreams something? I've had some really vivid ones where I've spent the entire next day believing the dream was reality. Oy, scary!

You and Carlos are so much more mature than Jerry! We can't go at the same time because I need to be in perfect health if he should need anything. It can all go to hell in a hand basket after that. I mostly immediately forget my dreams, but every so often one (like this) comes along to really throw me off. I had another the next night that took me a while to shake.

  7. Wishing you a wonderful birthday, Mitchell! Looks like Pedro might now be your former, former friend after making that incredible-looking tiramisu for you.

I hadn't even thought of that. I'm so fickle. Yes, Pedro is definitely now my former, former friend. The tiramisu was out of this world.

This was especially bizarre and even worse that it shook me up so much. But I really have gotten over it. It's now become a local joke.

Thanks. I've decided to carry it over into the weekend. Parties all night tonight here on the beach (in my honor I'm sure). And tomorrow the streets of many towns will be strewn with flowers, processions, and marching bands. They're calling it Corpus something-or-other, but I'm sure it's all for me, too. Hugs

  11. Happy Birthday Mitchell!!!! Your birthday looks like it couldn't be any more prefect. Who gets music like that under their balcony. Hell, I don't even have a balcony!!!! And that dream?!? If it helps tell San Geraldo you have a 44 year old sending you kisses for your birthday

It's so nice to have you on the ready. Thanks! There is music below our terrace every day! Some of it is even good. The Mexican mariachis are actually excellent but I have a feeling many of the tourists think they're "authentic Spain."

Jerry and I both come from long lines of till-death-do-us-parters. I have no idea where the dream came from and I wish it had been immediately forgotten. That tiramisu was Pedro's first attempt. It was amazing and I've been grazing my way through baked goods.

I loved it! We always need a little Christmas! The tiramisu was unbelievable. Pedro's first attempt. I don't know how it could possibly be improved. And not only does he cook, he also cleans up after himself!

It has been a joy. Time with friends. Jerry has clearly decided to stick around. I think I've always been immature. At this age people say I'm young at heart! Thanks!

And aren't dreams supposed to go by opposites?

I like your theory on dreams. And, so far at least, that's how this one is turning out. It's been a really wonderful birthday MONTH.
