Norse By Northwest / Nórdico Por Noroeste

We'll return to Bergen soon for more stories and pictures. But today I thought I'd take you on a quick trip up north. The highlight of our trip to Northern Norway was the time we spent with San Geraldo's cousins whom we had never met. San Geraldo had been in touch with only one, Elin, via email after they found each other 16 years ago. From the moment we met at a café near our hotel, we knew we would become close friends. We then met more of Elin's extended family and our joy was complete — if joy can ever be complete. This post is about our trip with them one evening for dinner in the coastal town of Nyksund, formerly a thriving fishing village which was deserted by the 1970s. After 30 years, Nyksund was rediscovered and revitalized. The village now boasts a summer population of 30 to 40! It also boasts artists and galleries and at least one exceptional restaurant. Pictures and stories about Elin's warm, charming, interesting, loving, generous, joyful family will come soon — as will pictures of the scenery and all the food we ate! And, of course, lots more from Bergen, too.

Desolate now maybe. In summer, it will be teeming with... 40 to 60... people. (I can't imagine living in a place like that, but it sure is beautiful.)

  5. Those photos remind me so much of the outports of Newfoundland here in Canada. No wonder the Vikings felt at home when they showed up there over 1000 years ago!

And Bergen is so much like Seattle, which made me appreciate why so many Norwegians settled there.

  6. Gorgeous! I can't help thinking what it would be like in winter. Brrrrrr. Does the place close down for winter, or are there people there all year long?

There are apparently people there year-round now, but they are hardy souls. Anyway, boasting a resident population of 40 to 60 in summer doesn't say much for the winter population.
