WE LEFT CONNECTICUT when San Geraldo was offered a great position at the University of California, San Diego, in the city of La Jolla. The University gave us a free apartment near campus while we looked for a place to live. I quickly found us a condo to rent. It was a nice place in a great location bordering Balboa Park (the Central Park of San Diego). The building was in a canyon at the bottom of a steep hill. My first thought as I approached by car was, "How the hell do we get up and down this in the snow?!?" But then I remembered we no longer lived in snow country. The owners were, to put it kindly, jerks. We rented while we saved for another house of our own. And that's a story for another day.

AT THE CONDO, 1994. MY MOTHER THE DOWAGER DUCHESS KEPT THIS ON HER BEDROOM DRESSER.
SHE SAID IT WAS "TOO INTIMATE" FOR A PUBLIC SPACE. GROAN!
MI MADRE LA DUQUESA VIUDA TENÍA ESTA FOTO SOBRE UN ARMARIO EN SU HABITACIÓN.
ELLA DIJO QUE ERA "DEMASIADO ÍNTIMO" PARA UN ESPACIO PÚBLICO. ¡GEMIDO! |

I love the DD:"Too intimate."
ReplyDeleteBob:
DeleteTruth is, I think it was my jeans and the angle -- although she would never say it.
SD is a nice place, very nice climate.
ReplyDeleteTravel:
DeleteIt was our favorite of all the cities we lived.
"too intimate"? you're not doing the horizontal bop, you are hugging! oy!
ReplyDeletecurious - do you still have any of the furniture shown in these pix, esp. the piano?
anne marie:
DeleteI think it was my jeans and the crotch shot that did it -- although she would never be that specific. We did ship some of the furniture to Spain, but only five pieces. The piano had to be craned into the third floor of our house in San Francisco, so we sold it WITH the house in 2000. I'll so a blog post showing the pieces we kept, some of which do appear in these pics.
Lovely picture of you 2
ReplyDeleteand
"I" for one would have hung it in the living room ~ just saying!
Had no idea that the terrain was hilly
good for the old ticker
walking up and down there I would think!
Ron:
DeleteMy job gave me the opportunity to work with a lot of free-lance photographers and artists. I asked one to come to the condo to take pictures of us. This was my favorite. I don't think my mother approved of the angle of that shot! She would have preferred more discreet cropping. San Diego has lots of canyons. We were at the bottom of one. Great hiking!
She too probably noticed the excitement going on in your jeans.
ReplyDeletemistress maddie:
DeleteTHAT was I'm sure the real reason she had a problem with the photo. That crotch shot. (That's me at rest. What can I tell you?)
I don't know how you guys move so frequently and "easily" - at least you make is seem easy. San Diego is lovely.
ReplyDeleteFrank:
DeleteJerry loves the IDEA of moving, but does get stressed. I LOVE moving. San Diego was hard to leave; our favorite of all the places we lived in the States.
I was born and raised in San Diego! My grandmother's family moved there when she was about twelve, so I'm practically third generation. I miss it so much! We can still hook up the old trailer and go visit family there. It's not like we live in a different state.
ReplyDeleteI love the pictures of you two thru the years. Watching you age, uh, mature this way is kind of sweet.
Deedles:
DeleteSan Diego was our favorite of all the places we lived in the States. It had everything for us. As for ... maturing ... I can finally share these photos without going into shock every time!
That's such a great photo of the two of you!
ReplyDeleteDebra:
DeleteI do love that photo, too. Thanks. We had shoot done at home by a free-lance photographer I worked with. It was the one and only photo we really liked. We had another very formal one of us at the piano -- completely out of character. THAT one, my mother loved. I haven't come across that one yet.
Great photo of you both
ReplyDeleteAdam:
DeleteThanks. I like that one, too.
What a wonderful "intimate" photograph.
ReplyDeleteYou set me to looking at our former residences (16 if I recall correctly) but I for the life of me can't remember all the addresses.
Willym:
DeleteI can remember every one of our addresses (with a little effort). As for the "intimate," I don't think my mother approved of my crotch appearing so prominently.
Wasn't hair great to have?!!
ReplyDeleteJim:
DeleteYep! And that was when I was adjusting to losing it. I had a hairdresser who was losing his hair and couldn't deal with it. He would fluff and style. He did the same to me and I couldn't stand it. So I moved on to someone who didn't have those issues. The first guy has since had numerous hair transplants. They actually look good but I wouldn't go through the discomfort or especially the expense. I like being bald! I don't wake up with bed head!
