The First Supper / La Primera Cena

THE TRIP FROM New York City to Washington DC was fine. Although it was Business Class on the express Amtrak train, the seats were disappointingly uncomfortable. But it was only three hours and we could get up and stretch whenever we needed.

We moved from Washington DC in 1986 and have been back only once (twice for San Geraldo) and those visits were more than 25 years ago. So, so far, things are very unfamiliar. We look forward to walking our old neighborhood, Georgetown, which we've been told hasn't changed much. Our first dinner was at our hotel's (Palomar) restaurant, Urbana. Phenomenal. And the most wonderful server. Her name is Esra. An amazing meal and a new friend.

And we had no room left for dessert, so we have to go back for peach pie.

Styleless New York / Nueva York Sin Estilo

WE ARE ON the express train to Washington DC. We left New York City's Penn Station more than an hour ago, so we have less than two hours until we arrive at Washington's historic Union Station. We just stopped in Philadelphia. (Hi, Anne Marie in Philly and Mistress Maddie!) Many more photos and stories of New York and The Kid Brother to come. I tried and tried to find the one-leg-shorter-than-the-other shorts style but all was in vain. All I found of interest was this fashion maven Sunday evening at Grand Central Station. Ho hum. And to think New York City used to be so avant garde.

ESTAMOS EN EL tren expreso a Washington DC. (Hola Anne Marie in Philly y Mistress Maddie!)

In Transit / En Tránsito

THE KID BROTHER took the subway to the hotel the other day and we went to the New York Transit Museum, which is a few minutes away. I thought it would be an interesting museum for The Kid Brother and that I would just enjoy being with him. Well, we both loved it. The museum is housed in an old subway station. It begins with photos, artefacts, and reproductions of the construction of the subway system, which began in 1903. As we made our way through the museum, we saw old trolley cars, buses, and then, after continuing down to the train platform, more than 100 years of original subway cars.

MY FIRST FULL day in town, I visited the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens. My Mother The Dowager Duchess used to take us there and, years later, San Geraldo and I would take her there whenever we visited. The Duchess was a fascinating, intelligent, artistic, multi-talented person. She was also not easy, to put it mildly (which is why I called her the Dowager Duchess). I'm glad I was able to maintain such a positive relationship with her through the years, but I haven't so much mourned her passing (almost two years ago) as I have philosophized about how much kinder she became in later years and how fortunate she was to live independently all her life. Two things she loved unconditionally were gardens and museums. As I walked joyfully through the gardens this time, I became more and more wistful.  These gardens and the New York museums, I realised, are the only purely happy memories I have of my mother. There were other happy memories, of course, but they all come with qualifiers (or ,"I'm not going to think about that part").

Another visitor and I stopped at the same spot to peak through a fence to take a picture of the Japanese Gardens. We laughed and talked about how much we loved the place. She, too, had sweet memories from her childhood. I had to abruptly end the conversation so I could walk over to a hedge and sob. It lasted about 30 seconds. It's a magical place.

Kid Brother, Cousin, Clowns / Hermanito, Primo, Payasos

SATURDAY WAS SPENT doing the traditional things with The Kid Brother. Going to Nathan's for hot dogs and French fries, playing skee-ball, clobbering clowns... and being The Brother's ATM.
The first thing he told us when we headed off for the subway to Coney Island was, "I got no money! No money until Monday".

We know the routine well. San Geraldo pulled out his wallet and handed him a $20 bill so we wouldn't have to listen to him all day.

After skee-ball, when it was just the two of us, The Kid Brother said, "I gotta hold onto this money for Monday. Nothin' for tomorrow. Or Sunday."

Jeez! I had just spent more than $50 on lunch and the same for skee-ball.

"Chuck," I said, "All I've got left are $100 bills."

"I'll take a hundred!"

"I'm not giving you $100!" I laughed.

We stopped at the bank and I cashed my two $100 bills and I placed a $20 in his waiting palm.

"Oh, Twenty's OK," he said soberly.

I handed him another twenty.

He's got us wrapped around his little finger.

"¡No te estoy dando $100!" Me reí.

Easy And Needs Exorcism / Fácil Y Necesita Exorcismo

WE SPENT THE day today with The Kid Brother — with a surprise appearance by our cousin Erik for a skee-ball competition (The Kid Brother left him, shocked, in the dust). More of all that at some other time. I first have to share this candid shot of San Geraldo — and a perfectly placed poster — as he snoozed on the subway ride to Coney Island.

We’re Makin' Canookie / Estamos Haciendo Canookie

WE'VE BEEN IN the City of New York for a little over 24 hours. Our flight arrived an hour early. Passport Control took less than 10 minutes. Our bags were waiting. The quickest, easiest arrival we've ever experienced at JFK. We stepped right into a waiting taxi. And we then spent about an hour and a half in New York traffic (with a wild driver). But our hotel is a pleasure. We had lunch at an excellent local burger place. San Geraldo began his siesta while I went and got US phone service for us both. I then joined his siesta after which we went to Rocco´s Tacos for dinner. Delicious, but way too high-energy for our jet-lagged selves.

Today I took the subway to the Brooklyn Museum, about a six-minute ride. The breathtakingly beautiful Brooklyn Botanic Gardens are behind the museum. After lunch at Mia´s Bakery, which is just down the street from the hotel, I had a canookie. Remember canookies (click here)? It´s a combination of a cannoli and a chocolate chip cookie.

The Kid Brother works Wednesdays, so we'll see him Thursday morning.

Today's photos were all taken with my phone because my camera sat safely on the dresser in the hotel room!

Coming Or Going / Yendo O Viniendo

I DON'T KNOW if I'm coming or going. Well, actually I do. I'm going. To New York. Now. Before we go, here are some shots I caught a couple of days ago of people coming and going in Fuengirola. The first is our friendly neighborhood quantum physics reader. He's been walking and reading that book for years. Yesterday afternoon, he was back at the beginning of the book. Doesn't he get it by now? I know I'd have it memorized.

NO SÉ SI estoy yendo o viniendo. Bueno, en realidad lo sé. Voy. Hacia New York. Ahora.

Cattitude / Gatoactitud

THE CATS SAW the suitcases and couldn't believe we were about to leave them again. Moose tried adorable. Dudo rang for the elevator and said he'd meet us at the car. And now they're pouting.

A Belly Full Of Love / Una Barriga Llena De Amor

OF COURSE, BEFORE we leave home for 16 days, we had to get some good food and love from our family at Mesón Salvador. First I'll show you the food. Then I'll show you just a bit of the love. San Geraldo was being healthy that night. He did not have dessert. My dessert came smothered in whipped cream (more than I wanted). What I left over, San Geraldo quickly scooped into his coffee. But god got him for that. There were hidden walnuts. And he hates walnuts.

San Geraldo estaba sano esa noche. Él no tenía postre.
